If I'm ever a subject in a criminal investigation and they want to interview me, let me try to demand confidential information about their ongoing investigation or else I'll refuse. I'm sure that would go well for me.
If a subject in a drug investigation comes to the authorities to demand documents about informants used in the ongoing investigation in exchange for not refusing to do an interview they'd subpoena him up on the spot.

The "perjury trap" excuse is such nonsense too. Perjury requires proof of intent that the defendant lied knowingly or wilfully. It's not like you have to be 100% correct and accurate in every answer to avoid a perjury charge, you just need to avoid deliberate lying.

To the extent that there is an organism that exists to keep the government in check by informing the citizenry, there is such a thing as good or bad media.

A perversion of the concept of balanced coverage, coupled with the pursuit of profit is what crippled American news, and that too will need to be repaired.

The state of the US media, like the US education and healthcare systems, is just another victim of applying capitalism without checks and balances.
