he has one more phone call and one more visit to bring whatever belongings to the federal detention center. i’m going to put everything else in storage to ship to him when he gets settled. his money has been placed into an account at work to be wired over when he arrives in samoa. i’m going to give him some money too and maybe take up a collection at work and send it all over. i have no idea about the logistics and geography but he’s going to try and get from western samoa to american samoa as a first stap on trying to get back here. really sad situation man.

Eleven days before the presidential inauguration last year, a billionaire Russian businessman with ties to the Kremlin visited Trump Tower in Manhattan to meet with Donald J. Trump’s personal lawyer and fixer, Michael D. Cohen, according to video footage and another person who attended the meeting.

In Mr. Cohen’s office on the 26th floor, he and the oligarch, Viktor Vekselberg, discussed a mutual desire to strengthen Russia’s relations with the United States under President Trump, according to Andrew Intrater, an American businessman who attended the meeting and invests money for Mr. Vekselberg. The men also arranged to see one another at the inauguration, the second of their three meetings, Mr. Intrater said.

Days after the inauguration, Mr. Intrater’s private equity firm, Columbus Nova, awarded Mr. Cohen a $1 million consulting contract, a deal that has drawn the attention of federal authorities investigating Mr. Cohen, according to people briefed on the inquiry.

Mr. Intrater said in an interview that Mr. Vekselberg, his cousin and biggest client, had no role in Columbus Nova’s decision to hire Mr. Cohen as a consultant. When asked about the meeting at Trump Tower during the presidential transition, Mr. Intrater described it as a brief and impromptu discussion, and said that Mr. Vekselberg had not originally planned to attend.

“Obviously, if I’d known in January 2017 that I was about to hire this high-profile guy who’d wind up in this big mess, I wouldn’t have introduced him to my biggest client, and wouldn’t have hired him at all,” Mr. Intrater said, adding that he had agreed to be interviewed about his dealings with Mr. Cohen because he had not done anything wrong.

The disclosure of the meeting sheds additional light on the intersection between Mr. Trump’s inner-circle and Russians with ties to the Kremlin. The meeting came after Mr. Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., met at Trump Tower during the campaign with a Kremlin-linked lawyer claiming to have damaging information on his opponent, Hillary Clinton, and a former campaign aide, George Papadopoulos, met with Russian intermediaries in Europe. During the campaign, Mr. Cohen was pursuing a deal to build a Trump high-rise in Moscow, which did not come to fruition.

Lawyers for Mr. Vekselberg and Mr. Cohen did not respond to requests for comment.

Border Patrol union chief calls Trump troop deployment 'a colossal waste'
President Donald Trump's decision to deploy members of the National Guard to the southern U.S. border with Mexico is "a colossal waste of resources," according to the leader of a union representing members of the U.S. Border Patrol.

National Border Patrol Council President Brandon Judd, who represents roughly 15,000 agents, panned the measure that the president implemented last month to beef up border security and curb illegal immigration, regarding it as fruitless, according to a Los Angeles Times report released late Thursday. "We have seen no benefit," Judd said.

"When I found out the National Guard was going to be on the border, I was extremely excited," the union chief said, pointing to the impact that past troop deployments have had in easing functions for the Border Patrol.

But he added that this time around, "that has not happened at all."

The criticism marks a departure for a group that during the 2016 elections endorsed Trump's presidential run and hailed his push to tighten border security. It was the first time the union had endorsed a presidential candidate.

The president in April activated a plan to dispatch National Guard troops to the border, with Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen announcing at the time the move was intended to help alleviate the task of border patrol agents.

The action mirrored that of his immediate predecessors, with President George W. Bush having deployed roughly 6,000 members of the National Guard from 2006 to 2008 and President Barack Obama sending about 1,200 National Guard members to the border in 2010.

For his push, Trump garnered commitments from governors to deploy 1,600 National Guards troops to states bordering Mexico, though the president initially sought 2,000 to 4,000 to be deployed.

A Border Patrol spokeswoman told the Times that the troops deployed have assisted with 3,924 deportations, 1,116 "turn backs" of migrants into Mexico and the seizure of 3,486 pounds of marijuana.

Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) lost the backing of the National Association of Realtors this week after the 15-term congressman said it was acceptable to not sell homes to gay people. Earlier this month, Rohrabacher told the Orange County Association of Realtors that “every homeowner should be able to make a decision not to sell their home to someone (if) they don’t agree with their lifestyle,” as recounted by one of the attendees. The National Association of Realtors is against discrimination based on “sexual orientation or gender identity,” according to its code of ethics. “It’s sad to see (NAR’s) priority is standing in solidarity with making sure a stamp of approval is put on somebody’s private lifestyle,” Rohrabacher said in response.
