The most important thing to remember about Los Angeles and its politics is that its public transit is seen as a charity and not as infrastructure.
And while LA is not unique in that its political establishment is mostly a mix of landlord, real estate developer, and law enforcement interests, what makes LA uniquely reactionary is how 90% of voters share in the elite sentiment that transit is for losers and that they are individually special and they have a plan to one day live in the hills and have a chauffeur and won’t really have to deal with having to drive and find parking in a city which has too many cars and too little transit. It’s a city full of Randian temporarily embarrassed millionaires who if given a choice would pick being allowed to hunt unhoused people for sport over having reliable mass transit with comfortable bus and train stops.
