Renter protections are important.
but they aren't a replacement for robust supply.


Spending time in NYC this summer, strong renter protections combined with constrained supply.
Seem to produce many of the same toxic entrenched NIMBYisms that prevent improvement and development.


instead of a city being slave to the interests of homeowners,
it's slave to the interest of city employees, and smallish group of lucky tenants in way below market rate housing.
 


There needs to be some way of holding these people accountable - it’s one thing to peddle harmful nonsense but it’s clearly another to do it knowing that it is harmful nonsense.

They need some sort of regulation and hiding behind “it’s just entertainment” shouldn’t cut it.

There really is a lot riding on that 1.6 Bn suit… perhaps the entire American 4th estate.
