This is sadly true. HR Block and Intuit are huge proponents of this.
There is a way to file for free if you make under 50k I think but it’s still not intuitive for a non tax professional. It’s the small tax payers that get screwed. Especially those who get the earned income tax credits.
For those that don’t know I am a tax professional, but I only do business returns.

The only positive is this **** is only for show since they need the senate and president to sign on. But when the debt ceiling and new budget needs to be approved. Bless us unless we can get some republicans who are willing to say **** those idiots which I have little hope for.

It’s just for show though. Most of these jobs are adding phones agents so you don’t have to be on hold for half a day with the IRS to talk to somebody and the agents which are being hired are replacing ones which have mandatory retirement. The IRS is the best agency in terms of bang for their salary. Agents legit generate revenue for the government. And the ones who audit the big companies and rich people are the ones who are closing on retirement and need to be replaced.

I try to explain this to so many people and people always want to act dumb about this.
An underfunded IRS is just another tax giveaway to the wealthy and increases the deficit
Also, the GOP buffoonery has the IRS short-staffed in nearly every position. They need more people to answer the phones and process basic paper returns
