Unless the lawyer is barely evolved past a caveman, the more likely scenario is that he/she was fed a lie by Trump. The lawyer then likely foolishly repeated the lie to DOJ without verifying her notoriously crooked client’s claims.

Like in the Manafort case, the lawyer who signed that false statement will presumably be called as a witness to charge Trump with the relevant statute for knowingly letting your lawyer lie to investigators by feeding them a lie. Manafort lied to his lawyers, who then repeated the lies to Mueller. Manafort’s lawyers then got put on the stand and their testimony helped convict Manafort of the charges for feeding 2 lies to Mueller through the unwitting lawyers.
