I only ever got braids once, when my pops traveled out of town for the weekend. Got them done by my sister on Friday night, cosplayed Iverson on Saturday, and took them off Sunday before noon because I knew he didn't leave our village before 10-11am, and it's usually a good 3-4 hour trip to make it back home. African parents see you with cornrows/braids/dreadlocks, and you're automatically gay, a drug addict/dealer, a robber, or any combination of these attributes.
