in hindsight that statement was BS, but gonzaga was showing a lot of potential. i think the cro cop win made everyones expectations so high, that he justcouldnt live up to it.

and overeem is looking like a beast as of late. i think he'd do very well in the ufc.

Spider Update: I read a couple articles that cleared things up about retirement. The only thing Spider isn't happy about is that he wants to fight 6 timesa year. Dana says it makes his job tough but he loves it.

Spiders manager said Dana has done nothing to screw Spider and that he won't be retiring anytime soon since he has 6 fights left on his contract.

Also noted he may retire after he gets his green card. He wants to teach at the school in South Florida. We know how green card processes are so he will befighting for a while.

He needs to keep his focus and fire for fighting so he can keep this train rollin.

Andre Arlovski vs Roy Nelson added to EliteXC's Oct 4 card.

Was gonna watch the card to watch my girl Gina and see Shamrock retired but I'll definitely be watching to see The Pitbull in action.
VP says EliteXC going mainstream with Oct. 4Arlovski vs. Nelson fight
"EliteXC: Heat," which airs live Oct. 4 on CBS from the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla., got a major dose of a starpower today with the addition of an Andrei Arlovski (13-5) vs. Roy Nelson (13-2) heavyweight fight.

With the recent postponement of its Oct. 11 "Day of Reckoning" card, Affliction Entertainment agreed to loan the fighters to EliteXC for the nationally televised event.

EliteXC Vice President Jared Shaw today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that the marquee match-up further proves that EliteXC is going after the mainstream audiences and its biggest competitor, the UFC.

"Oct. 4 is a huge event for mixed martial arts," Shaw said. "With this card and this line-up, we hit the mainstream, we hit the hardcore (fans), and we hit (UFC President) Dana White hard."

In addition to Arlovski (a former UFC heavyweight champion) vs. Nelson (the reigning IFL title-holder), the "EliteXC: Heat" televised main card features Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson vs. Ken Shamrock, an EliteXC welterweight title fight between champ Jake Shields and Paul Daley, top female fighter Gina Carano vs. Kelly Kobold-Gavin, and Benji Radach vs. Murilo "Ninja" Rua.

Shaw said no fights were dropped from the broadcast to make room for the Arlovski-Nelson bout.

Additionally, he said the idea to add the Affliction fight came less than two weeks ago.

"We're always talking to everybody," Shaw said. "About 10 days ago, [the Arlovski-Nelson fight] became something that we thought was real and that could be done. It was the right place at the right time.

"We're always looking to put the best fights on. It continues with the motto of what EliteXC has always said; we will let our fighters fight anywhere in the world, and we will work with anybody in the world. We've worked with FEG (DREAM), we've worked with Strikeforce, and now we will successfully work with Affliction."

(Coincidentally, in his Monday "Fight Biz" column, MMAjunkie.com's Steve Sievert argued that a merger between EliteXC and Affliction would be the best bet for the future of both organizations.)

Arlovski, formerly one of the UFC's most popular fighters, left the organization earlier this year after failing to reach a new deal with the promotion. He then extended his win streak to four straight with a third-round knockout of a tough Ben Rothwell at Affliction's debut show in July. He was then slated to fight Fedor Emelianenko at the Oct. 11 Affliction event. However, after a hand injury forced him out of the fight, Emelianenko was replaced by Josh Barnett.

With a recently formed partnership with Golden Boy Productions, Affliction then decided to postpone the event until January.

Nelson, meanwhile, is also signed to Affliction and was scheduled to fight Paul Buentello at that recently postponed event. During his current five-fight win streak, "Big Country" defeated Antonio Jaoude for the IFL heavyweight title and made two successful title defenses before the IFL's eventual demise earlier this year.

He'll now face arguably the toughest test of his career.

Shaw said that the fight announcement is bound to shock MMA fans. But, that's all part of the plan to garner the event some last-minute publicity.

"People said, 'Where are we? Why are we not being promoted?'" Shaw said. "I hope people are shocked by what they hear today because they need to understand that EliteXC, we're here and aren't going anywhere. We are here for the fans."

he was definitely winning before that but the later rounds could have been different.

SMH at joe rogan during that couture/gonzaga countdown.

something along the lines of 'we could very well be looking at the guy who will become the greatest mixed martial artist of all time' (gonzaga)

still at the very top of bs things ive heard in mma.
I'd have to disagree on the fluke thing, sorta. Because if you saw the fight with Randy, Gonzaga threw the same right head kick and landed butRandy just took it.

I dont know much about Daley but I think theres no way Shields is losing this one. Dude is a beast.

Andrei Arlovski is going to take this with eases.
Kenny slamcock will take it, if he take to the ground. we all know Kimbo ground game is weak.

i dont know who would be on that wagon because he beat a 71 year old, unroided shamrock.

yall realize he hast won a fight since kimo right? it's been years.

slooow time for mma until 91 imo.

Franklin / Hendo is on!

ive thought this would be a solid matchup for a while.

moving hendo back to 205 is not a smart move by the ufc imo.

that division is so glaringly weak, the shouldnt be moving every glimmer of talent out of it.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship has officially announced a return to Ireland on Jan 17, but this time they will be traveling to Dublin for the first time. Former middleweight champion, Rich "Ace" Franklin stays put at 205lbs to face Dan Henderson in a tough light heavyweight showdown as the main event.

Also on the card will be former top light heavyweight stand-out, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua moving up to heavyweight for the night to get a rematch with Mark "The Hammer" Coleman, who defeated Rua while the two were in Pride a few years ago.

The fight between Franklin and Henderson is the culmination of a tremendous body of work for both competitors as they finally get the chance to square off in the Octagon.

"Rich Franklin vs. Dan Henderson is a battle between two great former champions who are both looking to get another chance to wear a world title around their waist," said Dana White in a press release on Wednesday. "Franklin is the former UFC Middleweight champion, and he's a dangerous striker with solid submission skills - he also showed great takedown defense in his September destruction of powerful wrestler Matt Hamill."

"Dan Henderson is the former Pride welterweight and middleweight champion. He's a world class wrestler, known for his great chin and his one punch knockout power. He defeated formidable Brazilian submission specialist Rousimar Palhares in September. These are two fan favorites with a lot of pride on the line as they want to show that they are still among the very best fighters in the world."

Because the bout between Franklin and Henderson takes place at 205lbs, this could officially eliminate Henderson from the recent rumors that he may coach alongside Michael Bisping, who seems like a logical choice for the United Kingdom squad, in the latest installment of the "Ultimate Fighter" reality series.

The UFC has made no official announcement regarding any coaching possibilities for the show so anything could still happen.

The Jan 17 event will re-introduce fans to Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, who had one of the most hyped arrivals ever in the UFC, but did not live up to expectations when he lost to now light heavyweight champion, Forrest Griffin, in Sept 2007.

Rua has since disappeared off the radar due to several knee surgeries that have kept the former Pride champion sidelined for more than a year.

The rematch between Shogun and Coleman should be interesting to say the least as the two fighters have a history that at one time included a feud between to the camps of the two former champions. Coleman defeated Shogun while in Pride after a takedown from the former Ohio State wrestler caused an awkward landing for Rua and his arm broke thus stopping the fight.

Soon after it was almost bedlam as members of Rua's former team, Chute Boxe, rushed the ring as Coleman celebrated with his Hammer House squad. The grudge between to the two fighters will finally be settled in Ireland in January.

More fights are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

i guess this is in addition to the GSP/Penn 2 bout scheduled tenatively for the 31st.

Semtex is a pretty exciting fighter to watch, but yes, Jake Shields is looking pretty unstoppable right now.

paul daley is the cage rage champ. he's a beast in standup. i see the fight going either way.

This sounds interesting. Why Shogan gonna move up? I guess he can take this and then go back down ready to do some things in LHW. Forrest won't have thebelt by the time they rematch. Hendo/Franklin is interesting we'll see where Franklin measures with this one.
