Official Jazz thread

Today is Coltrane's 88th birthday... Instead of posting some of his songs (which I did up there), Imma post some hip hop tracks that sampled him...

Joey Bad*****- Wendy N Becky (ft. Chance the Rapper)

Sampled Naima.

Lupe Fiasco - Life,Death,& Love From San Francisco

Sampled Part 1: Acknowledgement.

Lords Of The Underground - Chief Rocka

Classic 90s rap... Sampled Amen.

The Dead Presidents - Spread Butter

Sampled Cousin Mary.

Asheru - Mood Swing (ft. Talib Kweli)

Sampled the classic Coltrane/Duke Ellington track In A Sentimental Mood.

The Pharcyde - Pack the Pipe

Sampled Autumn Serenade (like how I tied in autumn at the end of this post?!?! :smokin)

Hey fellas, it's been a while since I've checked the thread out. Very nice stuff in here, as always.

Psk, I'm in the process of setting up my stereo but my budget isn't anywhere close to 50k :lol. trying to keep it around 800. Just got two Infinity speakers and now looking for an AVR. Going to use it as a Home theater set up and for my music.

Is anyone else looking forward to Diana Krall's new album due to come out next month?

Yup supposed to come out on October 21. Same date as Jessie Ware's new album. Looking forward to both

Diana Krall - Devil May Care (Live)

I haven't felt any of Diana Krall's recent albums dating back to 2006's From This Moment On. There was a couple of stand out tracks from 2004's The Girl in the Other Room like her husband's song Almost Blue which he wrote for Chet Baker...

Love this song though, especially the live version.

Chet Baker - Let's Get Lost

Great doc & performances from Bruce Weber's film...

Ernest Ranglin - Surfin' & Black Disciples

The jazz/reggae/dub stylings of Ernest Ranglin. Big part of Jamaican musical heritage. He also played on the James Bond Dr. No soundtrack...

Dizzy Reid - I'll Close My Eyes

Reid on the trumpet, Mobley on the tenor sax, Wynton Kelly on the keys, Paul Chambers on the bottom end, & Art Taylor on them drums.

Ambrose Akinmusire - As We Fight

Damn, I fotgot I bought this album earlier this year. Just took off the wrap & popped it in to listen to. Love love love this track.

That Dizzy Reece cut was great... never heard of him before...

I had to check out some of his other stuff...

Red Garland Trio - September In The Rain

Since we on that Autumn tip...

Charlie Byrd - Autumn in New York

Red Garland - 'Tis Autumn

Another autumn related track. I love Red. Never get tired of listening to his trio...

Red Garland - East Of The Sun

Love Ray Barretto on percussion on this track.

This looks like a great doc about Clark Terry. It's funny that part of this doc's story is Terry mentoring the young kid. Terry's had a history of mentoring young musicians like Miles Davis & Quincy Jones among a whole host of others. Can't wait to watch this once it becomes available.

Red Garland's always been one of my faves...

Watched this on my iPad the other night... Paris Blues (1961) starring Sidney Poitier, Diahann Carroll, & Paul Newman with music from Duke Ellington... Great jazz movie...

^ I don't usually listen to Corea, but that was a great rendition... great autumnal-emotional-vibe...

Bill Evans - Porgy (I Loves You, Porgy)

Love this song.

Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage

Love this one too...

Wayne Shorter - Speak No Evil

This song embodies the term swing...

The Bad Plus - Everybody Wants To Rule The World (Tears For Fears cover)

I love the original & this cover...

Soil & Pimp Sessions - Funky Goldman

For some reason, these 2 groups always play together whenever I have my Apple devices playing in shuffle mode. This & the Bad Plus jawn up there just played one right after another.

Miles Davis - 'Round Midnight (studio & live version Berlin, W Germany 1967)

The quintet featured in this performance had Wayne Shorter (sax), Herbie Hancock (piano), Ron Carter (bass), & Tony Williams (drums). The talent that bands had during this era. :eek I love the performances you can find on YT.

I put the studio version too because quite frankly Coltrane's solo is just an utter piece of sonic beauty. :smokin

It's cool to see her (gaga) be so moved during the performance...

Some of her phrasing was a little too dramatic though... Subtly is always best when doing standards.

Yes!  Crazy that they'd just have a 'few guys' get together for a jam session... who all also happen to be freaking all-stars and legends.  Insane.

Yes, I agree with that.  You hear gals like Astrud & Rosie Clooney who just have this natural, easy way of singing, but yet it gives the songs so much character.
