+++OFFICIAL JAY Z THREAD+++

4 out of the last 6 songs are very not good, and 1 of the good songs is 56 seconds long

I'm just sayin, La Familia and Part II are horrible.  What was Jay doing on those?

I like the album, could it have been better, course but it met my expectations. A lot of opinions in here are critiquing the album in comparison with what's hot right now which is foolish. If Jay made the album to sound like the stuff other artists are puttin out now, then he would be hated for it.

I've learned that for the most part, if you were born after 1987, you're opinion on Hip Hop (not Rap) music is.....weak, for a lack of a better term.

Magna Carta Holy Grail is about a 6.5-7/10 for me.

To me, he's rapping okay/good. Just like with Born Sinner, if this album came out years ago, it would be awesome. But in today's Hip-Hop world, it's the melodies, and harmonies in Hip-Hop that take a rap record to the next level. (For me at least)

And I think that's what's lacking the most on this project. He's rapping well, but the flows are basic, and the lyrics can get a bit lazy and basic at times. But then again, I never hailed Jay-Z in that "G.O.A.T." light anyway.

However, I was pleasantly surprised by the album in that I really enjoyed it for the most part. Somewhereinamerica, Tom Ford, Holy Grail, Jay-Z blue, Oceans, & On The Run were the joints I dug the most.

Overall, its just a good rap album. Nothing more, nothing less.
The lyrics definitely take a backseat to the beats, which is unfortunate for an artists as skilled as jay z

sort of like a really good singer wasting their talents on run of the mill pop songs

at times it all feels like one long song with the same things being said in sort of the same ways

enjoyable, but not really special IMO

finally listened to it. 1st half of the album is on point. I got bored by part II( which i don't like) tho.

It's a fun listen but I thought this was going to be a concept album like AG.

Tom ford tho..... :x :hat

very good album... spun this through about 3 or 4 times & it gets better with each listen. i was super hyped off all the commercials & this album fully delivered. production was the biggest standout for me, but some thoughts -

-JT carried holy grail
-loved the nirvana smells like teen spirit tribute in that track as well
-the beat switch in picasso baby :x
-tom ford SLAPS :x :x :{ the tempo change at the end was perfect too
-f***withmeyouknowigotit knocks too... ross was perfect for that track
-frank's hook on oceans was PERFECT... he murdered that feature. love the way the beat slows down when his hook comes on, then picks up at the perfect time
-the horns in f.u.t.w. :smokin... really enjoyed the last 20 seconds of the beat too
-the piano in somewhere in america :Nthat
-the miley cyrus reference :rollin
-travi$ scott cooked up another banger with crown :x
-the scott boras diss :rollin
-heaven is so dope... the r.e.m. losing my religion reference was a nice touch
-fu-gee-la laugh in versus :lol :hat
-beach is better is too short :(
- a lot of people aren't feelin bbc, but i love the track. nas x jay are 3/3 & pharrell & timbo laced that beat nice. pharrell was 2/2 on this album with production :smokin
-nickels & dimes was a great way to end the album... hov did a nice job of picking intro & outro tracks, holy grail was the perfect intro too.

F with me you know I got it is the perfect 4th of July weekend anthem here in new Orleans..lets go essence fest! Og big daddy Kane in the building...

Everyone is entitled to their opinion about the Album. So rather you liked it or hated it respect to all. I personally liked it, I’m 29 and been rocking with Jay since I was 16. So this album is just like another chapter to a book series I’ve been reading half my life. Hov don’t have to rap anymore, so the fact that he put that much effort in making the album and had the money up front from the Samsung deal -made me like the album even more. I have seen rappers who “need to rap” put out garbage albums with no thoughts to their lyrics at all. Jay got a lot of lyrics on the album that are pretty clever, I’m still catching some here and there. The stage for the album and the content are enough for me. I hope this album at least can motivate other artist to put more time into their lyrics/albums. I am not saying Jay dropped a lyrical album, I’m saying he put thought into it.

I'm listening now... not feeling it as much as I thought I would based on how much people were praising it on here.

BBC is heat rocks though... Nas killed the hood and the both came correct with the verses :lol like Jay with the "it's Britney B"

I will listen to it more, but I guess I'm in the minority because BBC is my favorite so far but no one on here is feeling it.

Yo when BBC comes on while in a NYC club... game over a B automatically getting bent over and dry F'd doggy style.

That **** is going to be a nice club banger if it gets enough play.

I was born in 1987, my first Jay-Z album was Vol 2 when I was in 6th grade, I've bought every Jay album on release day since with the exception of BP3....

The best part about this album is easily the production. Anyone who say's different is kidding themselves.

There are some quotables here and there. Jay-Z kills it at times and skates over beats at times, but for the 4-5 times I've listened in full, he really isn't saying anything that memorable.

I would rank BP1, TBA, RD, WTT, and maybe AG above this.

Heaven, Jay-Z Blue, Oceans, and Holy Grail are my favorite tracks.

Most of the other tracks I find myself liking strictly for the production.

And IDC what anyone says, that Ross feature is HORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRIBLE :{ That is NOT rapping, that is a fat man talking over a beat.

Jay shoulda thrown Kendrick on the album after his BDKMV feature, but I'm sure he was afraid he'd get renegaded again.

I do enjoy a few of the songs a lot. But ehhhhhh.... I expected more.

I like BBC too, Nas and Jay were trying to make a song for the club and I think it would sound great in the club.

Anyways, it's a 8/10 album to me right now. If it had been cut down to 12 tracks, it would be a lot stronger and tighter sounding.

i just realized the coming up coming down part on Tom Ford is loosely inspired by MIA's bad girls..

i think some of the production is from that song too.

Coming up coming down is ugk influence/pimp c reference...that's y he's on the intro to the next track..r.i.p.

I know this article is old, I read it yesterday morning, but was it posted here?  I haven't seen any discussion of it and still see people giving Travis Scott props for killing this beat:
Jay-Z's Magna Carta Holy Grail debut taps Canadian's beats

Audacious launch campaign incorporates smartphone app, Magna Carta exhibit
[h5]CBC News[/h5]
Posted: Jul 4, 2013 12:14 PM ET

Last Updated: Jul 5, 2013 9:20 AM ET
Jay-Z unveiled his Magna Carta Holy Grail today, making headlines for the new album's much-hyped exclusive debut through a smartphone app, an audacious display of its cover art in the U.K. and incorporating beats created by a Canadian teen.

The rap mogul, fledgling NBA player agent and businessman has been ubiquitous on the web and across traditional and social media in the past few weeks after striking a landmark deal — said to be worth $5 million US — to give away one million digital copies of Magna Carta Holy Grail to Samsung Galaxy smartphone owners three days before the album officially goes on sale.

Trade magazine Billboard said it would not include the Samsung giveaways in its weekly music chart. Its rules prevent bulk album sales distributed for free from counting towards total sales and giveaways are ineligible for inclusion on its music charts.

However, the album will be considered for gold and platinum status immediately, because the Recording Industry Association of American announced this week it was amending its policy to count digital sales right away, rather than wait the usual 30 days after release.

Along with firing up music industry chatter, the New York rapper has also sparked controversy for putting the album's cover art on display next to a copy of the original Magna Carta documents in the U.K.

Considered the first significant document on the modern concept of human rights, the Magna Carta — also known as the Great Charter of Liberty — defined limits to royal power and was signed by King John at Runnymede in 1215.

Jay-Z's album art is currently on show next to one of the four surviving original documents in England's Salisbury Cathedral and will remain there until the end of July.
Canadian teen beat-maker featured
Magna Carta Holy Grail also has a Canadian connection, courtesy of budding Brampton, Ont.-based producer Ebony Oshunrinde, a.k.a. WondaGurl.

The 16-year-old Oshunrinde, who first delved into hip hop production using music software at the age of nine, has been building her profile over the past few years. Under the wing of Canadian producer Boi-1Da, she triumphed at the 2012 Battle of the Beatmakers and has created beats for Canadian rappers SonReal & Rich Kidd, singer-rapper Ryan Leslie and rapper-producer Travis Scott.

Her work with Scott led to her inclusion in Jay-Z's Magna Carta: Oshunrinde just happened to send Scott a new beat she was working on while the Texas rapper was in studio with Jay-Z. Subsequently, the teen's beat is now featured on the album's track Crown.

"It's a really good feeling. I want to show young people that they can do it," Oshunrinde, who just finished Grade 11, told the Toronto Star. "Anybody can be successful. It doesn’t matter where you're from."

this is really a hip hop album, i feel no influence from new hip hop on here besides the social network and molly references. This is a 5/5 for me. Best Jay-z album since black album. and before any of you say its too early to judge, this isnt me listening to a debut album, i been listen to jay-z albums on the first week of release since vol.3
I dont know how he keeps reinvent himself but he does it.
