RUUTU OFF THE TRADING BLOCK - SIGNS 4YR EXTENSION
Carolina Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford removed Tuomo Ruutu from any further trade talk on Wednesday when he re-signed the right wing to a four-year, $19 million extension.
The deal will pay Ruutu $4 million in 2012-13, and $5 million per the following three seasons.
"Players like Tuomo are extremely difficult to replace, and it is very important for our franchise to keep him here long term," Rutherford told the Hurricanes' website. "Along with the physical elements and skill level that he brings on the ice, Tuomo is a popular leader in our locker room. We are very happy that he has committed to what we are building here, and is excited about what the future holds for the Hurricanes."
If Ruutu didn't sign an extension, there would have likely been several teams lining up for his services.
Since the work stoppage in 2004-05, Ruutu has played 435 games and has 105 goals and 251 points. In 57 games this season, he has 17 goals and 30 points. Ruutu has played in four-plus seasons in Raleigh.
The Vantaa, Finland, native is second on the team in hits (106) and tied for fourth on the team with a plus-3 rating. He played in his 500th career NHL game on Dec. 31 at Tampa Bay, and had a six-game point streak from Dec. 15-27 (5 goals, 2 assists).
