The Willets Point development plan started in 2007. It failed due to the lease thing garage owners have in Willets Point. Wilpons are low tier millionaire people so they cannot afford buying. Then the case got re-opened two years ago
The Mas brothers, they’re local billionaires. Tried to buy the Marlins a few years back but got outbid so they teamed up with Beckham and went into soccer instead. After you posted, I found an article that recently came out that a local vote passed for them to begin development on the stadium project. That said, they still haven’t come to terms on a lease with the city (there’s an agreement in principle for a 99 year lease). They’ll have to demolish the golf course then start treatment on the underlying land, which is apparently contaminated (side note: why is the city letting people play golf on contaminated land?). Needless to say, it’s going to be a while before we get a stadium.
