Pat Riley won a championship just 2 seasons ago. Riley made the Heat relevent. He made a gamble for the short term, at it paid off(well worth it). He's been as active as you can be in both free agent and trade markets the past couple years, but the Heat are simply just taking the lumps off the backend of Shaq's contract(as Shaq isn't the player he once was even 2 years ago), and have no assets. He's been handcuffed.
I wouldn't say Riley the coach made the team relevant. Van Gundy made the team relevant by taking the team to playoffs before Shaq arrived; Riley the front office employee brought the team to the next level by getting Shaq and the other vets on the roster. A lot of people, myself included, would argue that the team would have had a decent shot of winning with SVG at the helm.
I think that Riley taking over for SVG still leaves a bad taste in everyone's mouth and the fact that this HOF coach can't get his players to win has hurt his legacy somewhat. He can win when the talent is right, but when it comes to coaching a rebuilding squad, he hasn't fared so well.
