OFFICIAL 2019 COLLEGE FOOTBALL OFFSEASON THREAD

Is Georgia Tech a bad job? Or what’s the deal there?

It's a tough gig for multiple reasons.

1. You're second fiddle to UGA. To put things in perspective, In the 2018 recruiting cycle, UGA signed 8 of the top 10 players in Georgia and Georgia Tech signed 2 out of the top 50. In the last four recruiting cycles, Georgia Tech has signed just one top-50 Georgia player per class. In the state of Georgia, GT is not only behind UGA, Clemson, Bama, etc. they're behind NC State, Wake Forest, etc. It's bad.

2. The school isn't committed to winning from a financial standpoint.

3. High academic standards. It's a technical school, there are no soft majors to hide athletes in. They're easiest major is Management but it still requires at least 1 computer science and Calc 2. Obviously that's not appealing to many top athletes

4. No buzz around the program. It's known as a nerd school and the alumni base kind of leans into it. Not to mention that there aren't any casual GT fans. Every Tech fan is an alumni or somehow associated with the university.

They should be above NcSt and Wake types. Plus they have Atlanta to sell. I think Collins can help change some of that. Brent Key should help too.

That was a big complaint for many Tech fans. Under Johnson, they just sold the school and its great academics. They should sell the city: hip hop roots, food, nightlife, etc. It should be an easy sell.

Also running the triple option doesn't help recruiting. Kids aspire to play in the NFL one day and that offense isn't gonna get you there.

I agree that Collins will help. He's trying to reinvigorate the program. The move to a traditional offense helps.

I've never mentioned this, but I really appreciate how we can discuss politics with the game in here and it doesn't get all "stick to sports!" Maybe that has something to do with the cultural makeup of this thread but I don't think so. We all just seem to be capable of a nuance and level of discourse that you don't find on Reddit or the team boards and I think that's great. It's made the NT CFB thread my go to for like 10+ years now.

That dude may be the first free agent to not get picked up
Might have to drop down to G5 teams if he wants a guaranteed starting spot.

Max Johnson took a huge dip in the new 247 update. No longer in the top 247 and he's a 3 star. His junior year was trash.

Is Mertz really that good?

Leach already got his QB but Hornibrook could have been a good fit for that system.

What do you mean by cultural makeup? nako xl nako xl

I'm not sure if cultural makeup is the word. I think the more accurate way to describe it is the demographics in this thread. Typically younger and more diverse racially and ethnically.

Honestly one of the toughest parts about being a college football is that I have nothing in common with the vast majority of other college football fans, especially those in the south. I'm a younger black man with liberal political leanings and the majority of the fans, at least where I'm from, are older conservative white guys. Honestly other than college football I have nothing in common with any of them.

If you want some perspective go read the Rivals, 247sports or SECrant off topic/political message boards. It's some of the wildest conservative stuff I've ever met in my life. It's nauseating.

Who is the QB at Auburn right now? Hornibrook shined as a Manning camp dude so the physical tools are there but he’s so trash in game.

I spoke too soon

He would be a decent stop gap quarterback if they don't feel like Bo Nix ready.

Even if he starts I don't see him being effective. It's painfully obvious that Gus Malzahn's system needs a mobile quarterback to be effective. His best offenses had had it converted defensive back at quarterback (Marshall) and arguably the greatest running quarterback of all time (Cam Newton).

If I'm Auburn, I would prioritize speed over accuracy in the starting quarterback.

A 60-70 year old super rich white dude off the 247 boards invited me and a friend over to his house in TriBeCa to catch an SC game (he has a projector and media room.) I made up an excuse to decline just to avoid the inevitable failure at friendship that would happen outside of SC games.

I’m surprised Auburn doesn’t recruit southern athlete/QBs better. “Oh Bama told you you’re a DB or WR? Come to Auburn and we’ll let you sling the rock.”

If he's worried about Mertz, I don't see how going to Barn and trying to battle out a freshman legacy in Nix who is a much better fit for the system is a better situation.
