When asked about a possible contract extension with the Denver Nuggets, Anthony cracked that he just signed a deal to play at Rucker for three years, then steered the subject back to the kids who went through 10 weeks of morning training. ESPN.com
When Paul was asked about maybe playing with Anthony somewhere down the line, New Orleans' star point guard just passed to Melo. "Today we came here to do the breakfast club," Anthony said. "That was our main goal today: Come out here in the morning, hang with the kids. Donate some checks. Me and CP hooked up here this weekend, and we came here to do this breakfast club, so that's your answer." ESPN.com

Carmelo Anthony and Chris Paul want to defend their Olympic gold medals.

On Thursday night, they dropped by to see the players who can earn them the chance.

Also watching from the sideline were LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Amare Stoudemire. James was the only one who didn't speak.

Anthony and Paul both said they plan to play in 2012 in London. The Americans would qualify by winning the world championships in Turkey that start Aug. 28.

"I can't wait, I definitely want to be a part of that team," said Paul, sidelined this summer as he recovers from knee surgery.

This summer has been one of the most anticipated, and most interesting, offseasons in the history of the NBA. With marquee names like LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Amar'e Stoudemire and Carlos Boozer all on the free agent market, there was no doubt that the balance of power throughout the NBA was set to change.

I had the chance to talk with New York Knicks legend Walt "Clyde" Frazier about LeBron's decision and the future of the Knicks with Stoudemire and beyond.

While the Knicks did everything they could to lure not just one, but two, of the league's biggest stars to the Big Apple by clearing tens of millions of dollars in cap space in order to bring a floundering franchise back to relevance in the NBA, the organization was only able to reel in Stoudemire, considered a second-tier player in this summer of superstars.

As New York made room for multiple max contract players, the Miami HEAT were busy doing the same and, eventually, convinced Wade to stay in South Beach but also attracted LeBron and Bosh to team with the 2006 NBA Finals MVP, making the Knicks acquisition of Stoudemire pale in comparison.

A five-time All-Star and a four-time All-NBA selection (one first team and three second team), Stoudemire is a great talent, but he plays the power forward position, a spot that was vacated this summer by 2010 All-Star David Lee (who averaged more than 20 points and north of 11 rebounds per game last season).

Without landing a sure-fire Hall of Fame player like Wade or James, the Knicks offseason has to be considered a disappointment in Frazier's eyes.

"It was devastating," Frazier said. "I thought for sure, once we got Amar'e, LeBron would see that and accept the challenge in New York, come in here, building the franchise and getting another championship. The people wanted him. They offered the guy everything. The people were just waiting for him to come in and accept that challenge and I think he just didn't want the pressure, man."

The disappointment on Frazier's part extends beyond the Knicks drawing a walk, rather than hitting a homerun, this summer.

The two-time NBA Champion was surprised that LeBron, D-Wade and Bosh chose to team up with one another rather than compete against each other, something that players in his day wouldn't have done.

"Especially LeBron," the seven-time All-Defensive Team honoree said of his disappointment in the trio of stars joining forces in Miami. "I could have accepted if he went back to Cleveland and tried to build it there, or with Stoudemire. Why wouldn't he say 'Well, Wade has Bosh, I have Stoudemire. I can attract players in New York. We can do it.'? That is the kind of attitude I was looking for from him. To me, that is taking the easy way out. On paper, you look, this is a team where he can go win championships, but I think his image is definitely going to be tarnished if that happens because that is Wade's team and he had to go there with Wade and Bosh. He didn't really do it on his own. That is going to be the stigma on his legacy.

"Magic (Johnson) didn't sit down and try to talk to (James) Worthy and those guys," Frazier continued, referring to the Los Angeles Lakers dynasty of the 1980's. "It just happened. It was serendipitous, the way the cards fell. This way, the deck was kind of stacked. It was a scenario where it's just how the draft played out. This is the hand that these guys wanted, this is the hand that these guys conspired to have, to have these three guys on the same team. To me, that takes away. It is kind of, like, pre-meditated."

Regardless of how, or why, it happened, however, Frazier believes that the HEAT will have success with its trio of stars. Even if the three will have to share one ball and the credit due for the wins that they assume will pile up.

"I think that since they wanted it," Frazier explained, "you know these guys wanted to play together, I don't think there will be an ego problem because they knew the deal going in: that they would all be there and have to play and share the ball. They knew that they were going to be short role players, so it is essentially those three guys that have to carry the load until they can get some other players.

"I remember with Chamberlain, Baylor and West, when they were on the same team, they had ego problems. Chamberlain clogged up the middle for Baylor. West couldn't get the ball, so they were terrible together. I don't see that happening in Miami because the guys talked it over, actually, and wanted this to happen, that they end up in the same place."

Clearly, with the HEAT putting together its All-Star ensemble, Miami's short-term future is solidified and few teams in the NBA will be able to match-up with, or defend, such a talented, multi-dimensional roster, or starting lineup, at least.

But simply having Bosh, Wade and James doesn't mean titles for the HEAT. They have to get solid contributions for the players they have assembled to play alongside the team's trio of stars. Players like Mike Miller, Udonis Haslem, Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Eddie House will have to step up to the plate and consistently produce under the enormous pressure placed upon them by not only the media, but by themselves as well.

"That is going to be the challenge," Frazier said, "the ultimate challenge, because those guys scoring, if they score 30 a game, that is only 90. They are still going to need someone to help out. They are going to have substitutions. What is going to happen then?"

So what does the future hold for the Knicks? According to Frazier, another championship banner in the rafters of Madison Square Garden.

"The Knicks moving forward means a championship," the long-time Knicks point guard and current color commentator for team's games televised on the MSG Network said.
"You know, that is what they are building, that is the way they think. Right now, of course, they would be happy to get into the playoffs.

"Eventually it is winning a championship and now these guys are standing in their way. Obviously it is going to take some luck to get more bona fide players for them to be on caliber with Miami now and Orlando and perhaps Boston this year.

"I have faith in management," he continued. "I think they have done an excellent job. We have finally gotten in a position of strength to negotiate for players. To me, you know, it is luck once you are there, like Miami, to pull that off and get three guys in one stroke. The Knicks, if they could get Melo (Denver Nuggets All-Star Carmelo Anthony) next year, he's saying that he might want to be a Knick, if everything is right and he could come to the team, I think right away we are on par with Miami."

While New York missed out on the biggest prize (or prizes) this summer, Frazier believes that the Knicks, along with the Nets and Bulls, did the right thing in trying to clear the cap space to come away with the jackpot struck by the Miami HEAT.

Sure, Chicago, New Jersey and New York were left empty handed by comparison, but in order to win big, you have to put the chips on the table.

"They think the risk is worth the gamble," he said. "You have to be in it to win it. All those teams were in it, they just didn't win it. They were in a position to wheel and deal but it just didn't happen. Again, like I said, you have to have a certain amount of luck when you are dealing with this scenario and Miami was able to pull it off."

While the Knicks couldn't pull it off this summer, they still possess the financial flexibility to pursue a big-name free agent in 2011. With names like Carmelo Anthony, Yao Ming, Tony Parker, Tim Duncan and Caron Butler all potentially on the market, New York will have another shot at bringing in a top-quality running mate for Stoudemire.

If they get lucky.
