As part of his training camp tour, Goodell met with players Wednesday at the complex to discuss the upcoming season. He encouraged players to ask questions about the negotiations between owners and the players' union on a new collective bargaining agreement, and that's where things broke down. Instead of offering insight into the negotiation process, players said, Goodell seemed evasive.
"He's walking around kissing babies, you know, shaking hands, and he just wants to say that the owners are over here, the players are over here and I'm in the middle, I'm for the game," top cornerback DeAngelo Hall said. "But to ask him a question about anything, he couldn't answer.

"He couldn't answer this, go check with this, go ask these people, I don't really know. It was a waste of time. We sat there and shot questions at him for 45 minutes, and pushed meetings back and had to be here longer for nothing. A total waste of time."

Players hoped Goodell would provide specifics about the main issues that have prompted many NFL observers to believe that a lockout, for at least part of the 2011 season, is unavoidable. They left the room with little optimism about the labor situation.

Delmas won't need surgery...
During the offseason, Delmas was sent to a specialist about his injury. All options were discussed, including surgery, but the specialist did not recommend it.

Because it's a high groin injury, which takes longer to heal, the Lions are being cautious with Delmas and his rehabilitation.

Thursday, Delmas walked off the practice field wearing another player's helmet, attempting to sneak past reporters. When approached, he refused to answer questions. He did talk about it later in the locker room.

"Yeah, surgery has been discussed, but it's not a possibility right now,'' he said. "I'm healing and I'm not trying to rush it back. I don't want to hurt my team, and I want to be 100 percent when I'm out there.''

Losing Delmas would be a huge blow to a secondary that's already thin. A second-round pick last year, Delmas had a strong, all-around rookie season. He became the first rookie in NFL history to score three different ways in a single season (interception return, fumble return and a safety).

By the end of the season, he took over responsibility for calling the defensive backfield signals -- a role normally taken by a seasoned veteran.

Schwartz would not put a timetable on Delmas' possible return to the field, as has been his method of operation since becoming coach.
