OFFICIAL 2010 LOS ANGELES DODGERS THREAD [79-82] : The losing season

Tear me a new one, @$!# it. But IMO with the right return (I am fully aware Ned is still out GM) I wouldn't shy away from letting one or two of the big guys go.
Man, as bad as last night was, it was still just 1 of 162.

With the way we've dominated the NL West up to this point, with as many games as we have against the division, the season is far from over.

Padres, Rockies, Giants got way better, while the off-season for the Dodgers kept this team in tact with no improvements.

Every other team keeps moving up.

If the divorce wasn't a major impact before, it will be now, when you're in need of reinforcements.

You're right, it was just one more in the loss column with ~70 to go.

The way they're playing rightnow, the way the rest of the division is playing and our position in the standings, it's only a matter of moments before Ned pulls off a dumb %%% trade to satisfy the masses while knowing we aren't doing a damn thing outside of the division.

We beat up on SF and SD, and we're still looking up at them.

Maybe it's because seeing last nights happenings in person was my first time back since the Yankee blow-up, but this team lacks heart that they had in the past two seasons. Yeah you can't see intangibles in the stat lines, but if you could we'd be even further down in the standings.

This is one deadline where I HOPE we have a quiet one a la Dan Evans, because the way they're playing, and have been playing, there's no need to risk the farm for this seasons squad.

From "Donnie Baseball" to "Donnie Two Trips"

im also hoping for nothing to happen at the trade.  no need to blow things up.  I read today that with manny out, they are looking for bats... which i dont get.  we have NOBODY in the pen, but kuo. and where was weaver last night?  how do you put george in, in that situation?

no wade
no troncoso
no bellisario
travis sucks
miller sucks

where was link?

what a mess. but i say wait.  manny is off the books, kuroda is off the books.

I feel like I say this every year, but what's the point of going into doomsday mode if somehow they fight their way out of it every year?

I'm not saying they're not playing like #@%+ right now, but what does giving up now do about anything?

i dont know about fight their way out since they were a .500 team after the break last year. this year they are actually going to have to play well to contend for a spot.

Do you see this team threatening in October as is? Do you see them making the necessary moves without going the Santana/Bell route getting us that far?

If not, then them getting themselves out of this sinkhole is all for naught.

As far as I know, McCourt is still our owner. Better yet, hold on to everyone. Let the Divorce proceedings dictate who goes where. But to further deplete this farm for another fluke October makes zero sense.

The Dodgers expect they'll be able to add a starter and reliever in the next ten days, giving up better prospects while the other team pays the player's salary. Not the best long-term strategy. The Dodgers have been linked to Paul Maholm, Roy Oswalt, Ted Lilly, Jake Westbrook, Fausto Carmona, David Aardsma, and the Blue Jays' relievers.

What happened last night in a nutshell:

So I wouldn't necessarily call him "Donny Two Trips"

The most alarming state of the front office isn't the the slow stripping of the farm system to get pieces at the deadline, or the free agent vs. prospects debate, or is Ned Colletti a competent GM.  It's the lack of resources and deferred salaries, unless Frank McCourt sells this team it will be in a downward spiral.  He is really banking on that TV deal in 2013-14, I surely hope that Bud Selig/MLB steps in and forces the sale of the Dodgers before that.  Frank McCourt has proven to be very incompetent when it comes to running a professional franchise.

At this point, even with the brash Mark Cuban (hypothetically) as owner wouldn't be as bad as the stain Frank McCourt has put on this franchise and MLB.

It is important to find a balance between a high/low payroll and a beefed up farm system.  Obviously if you are the Rays, you will sink a lot of your resources into your farm system due to the fact that your payroll cannot be over $70 million.  The Yankees and the Red Sox have found that balance although they have the advantage of plucking any FA they want with their astronomical payrolls, the Mets and Cubs still haven't figured it out.

The Dodgers no longer operate like a high payroll club.  They are afraid to take on salary, and they have traded highly touted prospects at very key positions (C Santana, 3b Bell) in order to have the other club pick up the tab.  You have to look at how foolish that is.

The Dodgers traded a highly touted catcher in order to save about $2 milllion.  The Rangers when everyone thought they were stacked with Laird, Teagarden, Saltalamacchia and Ramirez held on to all of them.  Sure it backfired, since they haven't really panned out (Laird was traded to Detroit), however they held on to them because Catcher is a critical position.  The Twins who just locked up Joe Mauer to what amounts to a lifetime contract are reluctant to part with highly touted catcher Wilson Ramos...for Cliff Lee.  The Yankees have been reluctant to part with Jesus Montero.  We gave up Carlos Santana in order for the Tribe to pick up $2 million in salary (

).

Bell may not pan out, or he will, but giving up a highly touted prospect that was in line to replace your current third baseman was foolish, especially for lefty specialist out of the pen...when you already have one (Kuo)

.

Our payroll is low because of deferred salaries.  Which if the current ownership stays in tact will come back and bite us in the @!$.  That is something that low payroll teams have done to keep up with the Jones'.  I still think the Diamondbacks are reeling from all those deferred contracts they gave out at the turn of the century.  These deferred salaries will affect this team when the young guys come up for arbitration and the arbitration years end in 2012.

We could've been done with Juan Pierre's contract after the 2011 season, instead they will pay Pierre $3 million and defer $12.7 million for 2012 and $11 million for 2013.  The Angels got rid of a similar contract with Gary Mathew's, they chose to pay up front and be done with it after 2011.

Nomar is still getting $3.5 million next year.
Andruw Jones will be getting $3.2 million until the end of the 2014 season.
Manny will be getting $8.3 million in 2011,2012, 2013.

Defered Salaries per year:
2011 - $21 million (Jones, Ramirez, Pierre, Schmidt, Garciaparra)
2012 - $24.2 (Pierre, Ramirez, Jones)
2013 - $23 (Pierre, Ramirez, Jones)
2014 - $9.6 (Pierre, Ramirez, Jones)
manny is off the books

Is this season over?  I wouldn't say so, not with the way we play the NL West and considering the fact that the majority of September is games against the NL West.  The division will come down to the wire between the Rockies, Giants, Padres and Dodgers.  The boys are just digging themselves a hole at this point.  Unless we go down by 10 games, then I will not count anyone out.

Great read. I didn't know about all those deferred salaries.

Can somebody explain to me the Carlos Santana thing? Was it like, there was a deal in place for Casey Blake, but the Dodgers said if you guys pay his contract, we'll give you Santana too?

You got it. Ned threw him to CLE in order to have them eat his salary.

And IronMan, as I was reading TBLA this morning, I started checking out the payroll . . .

This %!@# is terrible man. Absolute %!@#.

That's unbelievable.

im pissed and what not but i dont think the seasons over either. i always assume every team from san diego is just lying around waiting to choke so the opportunity will be there. ill be there tonight going hard on the picante dogs.

Ironman, all that stuff you posted is nonsense.

I'm a Dodger fan and I deserve better, I demand a title right now, who cares about stinkin' "prospects," Casey Blake is a gritty veteran at least Sherrill has heart unlike other relievers we have.

i see the padres slowly falling out of contention.
same with the giants, not enough hitting.
the team im the most worried about is the rockies. the past few years theyve been waaaaaaaaaaaaaay at the bottom and got a real tear in the last month or two and ride it into the playoffs

hankschulman BREAKING NEWS: Just been told by a league official that umps erred last night by making Broxton leave. They should have ejected Mattingly and forced Broxton to face Torres. See Splash Blog on sfgate.com for details.

Yeah I was reading about how the umps blew the call on one of the blogs this morning.

Never understood why I couldn't visit the mound more than once in my video games, but now I know
