I was born in L.A.(occasionally visited) but lived in Philly most of my life. The two cities are night and day. Expect a drastic change in environment.

Avoid residing in North or West Philly.

Its good to invest in a apartment in in a good area because it can and will get real once the weather breaks. Don't be fooled. Philly has a huge crime and violence problem. You can easily get caught out there. No matter where you live always stay alert.

I recommend getting a apartment in  Manayunk or Mt Airy.

Olde City, Manayunk, Center City, University City are a few area's you should expose yourself to while living there (and the areas already mentioned). There's all types of things to do and places to go. You just have to find what your interested in. The city can get rough but it as far entertainment and enjoying yourself there's always something to do.

The city is rooted into alot of subcultures as well. There have been a recent number of uppity hipsters but they are harmless (Just annoying as all hell). If you see them around the apartments your look at then you will know your in a relatively safe place.

PM me if you have any questions.

At the same time, there is some hometown bias in here too, so you take that for what it's worth.

Being as objective as I can be, enjoy the summer and fall in the city. Don't stray into a neighborhood you're not comfortable in. Eat a cheesesteak (Jim's, Lorenzo's). Visit the sports complex (There's going to be a championship this year, mark my words). And just enjoy your life in a new place.

NYC > PhillyYankees> Phillies

Lived in south philly for 21years so far, I love everything about this city. It can have its up and downs at time but most of the time its chillin. i would look into appt or condominiums in center city so the commute to temple isnt that far for you. There actually building this place called xfinity Live near the ball parks down by pattison ave so make sure you check that out beg of April and grab some beers and cheer on the flyers, Sixers and be sure to check a Phillies game out also bro its a great expierence. Philly has a bad reputation but dont let that get to your head it is a great city. yes there is a hell lot of violence, i beleieve we have more deaths than days right now which is pretty sad but its life violence is everywhere. Since Philly is well Known for there cheesesteaks check out either Jims or ishkabbibles up South St. Genos And Pats has the worst cheesesteaks ever, too much fat. but if you got any question feel free to DM me ill be glad to help you get accustomed to the Philly area.

one thing i will say is get ready to hear our slang of words..

pretty much. by no means is philly a perfect place. but people over exxagerate things. Go to any city and there will be bad parts. Do people not know how violent chicago and dc are. baltimore. Now Id never say avoid chicago or any city. Just be careful where you go. If you are chilling in the heart of center city, people act like theyre going to get randomly shot. Most of the violent crime happens to people in that life. I have no reason to be roaming around north philly at 1am, and expect to be perfectly safe.

And dude brought up flash mobs? There have been like 3 in 4 years, and that was because kids were restless. City upped cops walkking around center city and south street, so it doesnt happen anymore

No. It's actually a pretty great city from nightlife to history to music, etc.
However, having lived in and around the city most of my life (I live in NYC now), I can firmly say the females are not all that great.

Not sure how old you are or what you're looking for, but Manayunk is a spot where a lot of post-grad people move to. Not directly in center city, but it's very accessible. Haven't been there recently, so Josednk may be right about a lot of construction and stuff around that area though.
I hate absolutely HATE Manayunk but it will appeal to some; it's very pretentious and everyone is trying to one up the next
Really? Never got that vibe when I've hung there. It felt like more of a college town more than anything in my experiences.
For the guy who asked about Parx by Franklin Mills - not sure what you're expecting, but it's a decent spot to chill and throw down a few bucks. Haven't been there in a long time...it used to be called Philly Park but I guess they re-branded and updated it. There's also a small casino on the waterfront in Philly. Stopped in once when I was waiting for a show to start on the festival pier.

You trippin if you think there have been only 3 flash mobs in 4 years. I work downtown and I have seen more than 3 flash mobs last summer alone.

kids get bored (usually during the summer) and they use twitter.FB to coordinate huge mobs in the city.Think dancing flash mobs, but not much dancing but teens that have too much free time and are restless. Usually on South street or center city where they just act a fool in the streets and prevent cars from driving etc. They can get pretty out of control, so last year the city institued a curfew and had more police roaming CC and South street. Kids were getting popped foor being out too late, so for the most part they stopped

I teach at one of the Bartram Satellite schools. Taught at Bartram too. It's a #$^&*# warzone there

DAMN sucks for you dude. I grew up in SW. I still bartend there, two blocks from Bartram main actually. And yes, it is a warzone if you don't know whats good.

Flash mobs were a joke? Tell that to the one hs kid who decides hes gonna snuff someone with 15 of his friends beside him for no reason. You think you jackie chan and are gonna smack 15 highschoolers at once? Eff outta here. So what is your point btw only the touristy parts are dangerous?? And i had friends all over from south to north philly

Depends on how much you're going to be making. Not only do we have terrible neighborhoods, Philly has become a damn haven for hipsters as well.

Temple, that's right off broad street.....the good thing about my city is there is transportation everywhere. I've been to Cali...like everyone said weather is the biggest change, but the city has a lot of life, you'll pick up on things fast. Take trips, NY, NJ, and Delaware only hrs away. The food there is great....that's why we are in the top five for fat people. As a NT'dr south street with be you best bet on shoes.....for limited release HoH in Cheltanham Mall will be you best bet.....It's better than most HoH....It's easy to fall In love with Philly. Enjoy yourself. When in North or South Philly just mind you P's and Q's and you'll be straight. SW Philly has a lot of nice places....hang out spot in Philly Repeated Ave.....Onyx is a Nice gentlemans club/ night club.....check it out. One. Oh yeah Cheese steak....are like this salt pepper mustard mayo and fried onions, plus or minus....forget gino's....Woodland village o. 63rd and Woodland Ave in SW Philly...have fun.
