The fate of Keith Smart as coach of the Warriors could be revealed this week.

A team source said a decision is expected within the next two or three days, while another source "wouldn't be surprised if he's let go (Wednesday)."

Larry Riley, recently named executive vice president of basketball operations, said on April 15 that the Warriors would begin evaluating Smart in eight or nine days, which would have been last weekend.

Smart, when contacted Tuesday, said he hadn't heard anything from management and said no meeting was scheduled. The first-year coach led the Warriors to a 36-46 record, a 10-game improvement over the 2009-2010 season. Smart had only one guaranteed year on his contract.

So who are possible candidates for our potentially vacant head coaching job (assuming they are interested in coaching the Warriors)?

- Rick Adelman
- Jeff Van Gundy

Who else?

Thank goodness. My friend was mentioning he read somewhere Smart gave Monta 40+ minutes to get him ready for the playoffs...

...Getting there first would be a better idea.

Keith Smart will not be back as Warriors coach.

The Warriors will not pick up their team option on his contract for the 2011-12 season, Comcast SportsNet Bay Area has learned from sources.

Smart led the Warriors to a 36-46 record in his first season as head coach, replacing Don Nelson in late September -- less than a week before training camp started. Smart had been an assistant under Nelson for four previous seasons.

In all, Smart has been with the Warriors for eight years, serving first as an assistant under Eric Musselman and then Mike Montgomery. http://
It was never certain that Smart would be back, in some part because he was never  considered owner Joe Lacob's first choice. For one, Lacob wasn't officially installed as owner when Smart replaced Nelson, and two, Smart's contract for next season was only partially guaranteed.

.

JVG, SVG (if fired), Sloan and Adelman are my top choices for HC...There may be another I might've forgotten.

I'd stay away from JVG and Adelman. Those guys are old news.

However, if SVG gets fired I'd try to get him. Let's face it, no elite coach or player would come here. Our owners are too cheap and our roster is too small and cap is maxed out. If we can land SVG, we can maybe get D21 with some sort of sign and trade with the remaining players like Lee/Biendris to Orlando (wishful thinking)

Seems like I was the only one around here who liked Smart. Seems like he had the team playing hard despite the deficiencies on the court. I guess from being a life long Detroit Lions fan I know its not going to be an over night process to turn this team around. I'm not really sure who is out there that would make an impression on the team like Smart did.
