As soon as they're drafted we'll know everything about their future.

So, Kobe was happy to put himself before the team and have Shaq out so long as he could build his image as a champion alone?

And this is the guy you all love?

It's not as simple as that.

Old(er) aging Shaq wanted a fat extension, which would tie us up (like 48.5 has) and so Kobe didn't "save" Shaq, or try to repair anything, he just let it go.

05-06 Shaq only happened cuz he was angry at us, otherwise he would have weighed us down for years.

Sadly, it was time. It just was.

Kobe did it the same way Jordan would too. Phil used to tell MJ they could win with him taking on a lesser role and MJ said they could win with him going hard every minute too. Same thing.

(And possibly why Phil agreed to come back. Notice Kobe DID bury the hatchet with Phil, for the good of the team?)

Yea cause he backed it up, and he would have taken the hit had it not worked out, it's just who he is. He's 100% right though, got fools on this very site talking about he got free rings. He wouldn't have been appreciated as a individual talent of Shaq would have stayed and there's no guarantee we win two more after having he and Kobe on max deals.

Or, had we kept Shaq, and Kobe walks as a FA. We would have been screwed, immediately.

We traded Shaq in 04, and we're in the Finals by 08. Zero chance that happens keeping Shaq and Kobe walking.

Literally TONS of possibilities that could have had us as a lottery team or a contender had we kept Shaq and let Kobe walk.

The speculation doesn't just go one way.

It ain't like Shaq was a championship cancer. Left in 04, won in 06.

It's possible we keep him and make some immediate changes that equal success right away.

And possible we don't.

shaq was washed by 2007

that's 2 years to match both of kobe's championships

so one summer to rebuild after losing the rest of the team (if this was possible, they would have done it for kobe)

not happening

only notable freeagent in 04 was steve nash

lakers keep shaq, sign steve nash

end up winning 0 championships over 2 years

no dantoni + nash combo

kobe wins back to back MVPs with new team

Forgot what thread I was in.

Yeah, yeah, totally, the only reason Shaq went on to be a part of a championship team was sheer luck, and we immediately sucked just because our FO didn't do it right. That's it. Our Finals team was gutted and no one else decided to team up with Kobe... because the FO goofed. That's it, end of story. Nothing else was possible.

Sure, we'll go with that, in here. *thumbs up*

Shaq loved LA as whole,,but he doesnt love Kobe outside basketball and the controversy surrounds it,,Shaq was a scrub after his Miami days,,too fat to play NBA basketball ,,,btw what pick are we so far in the upcoming NBA draft?

Team was nearly capped out when they traded for Brian Grant & Lamar Odom.. Only had about $5mil left to spend. Used it to bring back Vlade,

Had we kept Shaq... Just Shaq alone, we'd have about $18mil in cap space.

Slava then Devean George, it's down to about $11mil. Not including ANYONE else.

Kobe made about 55% of what Shaq made in 2004-05. Kobe was 26, Shaq was 32.

You keep Shaq, and let Kobe walk... You are in a REALLY bad position..

It was either make it work with Kobe & Shaq.. Which was out of the question, especially with Phil leaving...

Or you have to pick one or the other... Taking Kobe over Shaq when you consider age and salary... Easy decision

There was really no other course of action.. It was a failed marriage.. And it was the fault of Shaq, Kobe & Phil. All 3 of them did many things that would lead to the end.

Hindsight is 20/20.. But you can't take 32 over 26. Just isn't a smart basketball decision. Could Kobe & Shaq have won 1 more? Probably.. But Shaq was coming to the end of being that dominate force, there was so many reasons that justified cutting ties then and there.

No no it's just cause people didn't want to play with Kobe, they all would have taken minimums to play with Shaq, salary cap be damned. Payton and Malone come back.
