we need to keep this bench next year
In working along those very lines, I'm perusing pieces I'd like to see us chase next year.
I'd like to avoid Melo, Rudy Gay, Z-Bo, etc. So I rather go depth+talent more so than star talent + fill ins. (if we can)
First is PG Kyle Lowry. We've all wanted Lowry for a long long time, he's our new "Sessions" obsession.
He's a little old, but still usable and I have a backup plan for him anyways. 6-0, can shoot and defend well enough, penetrate, not toooooo expensive, but he won't play for free surely.
I take Lowry on the basis that we may not pull Rondo in 2015, therefore whatever pick we land this year, be it 5 or 16, we take a PG. When Lowry hits 30-31, that draft pick hits 22-23-24 and takes over.
I would still like to keep Farmar as well. If he'll stay with us. Gives us depth, insurance, etc. (also, let's say we miss on Lowry, still draft a PG and Farmar may become the starter next season, the backup to the backup plan here)
Second is Kobe. And 48 million wasted dollars.
Behind him, I'd love to roll some dice. I mentioned a few days ago, Lance Stephenson. No idea if he likes Indy or not, but I suspect he's earned his money. Not max money, but a large pay day nonetheless. They can play together as SF/SG if need be, or simply stagger their minutes. Lance is only gonna be 24, he is like a lottery pick himself with his experience + upside. Again, I have no idea if he wants us, or likes the East Coast, or rather just stay with Indy, but if he has any interest in us, I want him.
Xavier should be kept as well. Again, insurance, and if we miss out on Lance
Third, Essential's guy, Luol Deng. We all know, Kobe wouldn't accept deal to Chicago if Deng came to us, Kobe obviously loves the kid. He has skill, and is a ginormous upgrade over what Ron was supposed to provide us, he can defend, AND he can dribble, so, yeah......
He is older, 29, and has mileage, but, were we to land Lowry and Lance, take a gander at the defense we'd be starting to acquire. Also, with this day and age, Deng can play the stretch 4 and allow you to use Lowry, Kobe, Lance, and Deng on the court all at once. Just need a rebounding Center to cover the rebounding. (missing Dwight hurts bad right there, he would have anchored that defense like a ************)
Wes has shown me that he provides some use. Absolutely bring him back (cheap) and see what else he can learn/develop.
PF, well, I "hope" to have the funds to pull Kevin Love in 2015. So what I fit in in 2014 would be a temp so to speak. I have no need for Pau anymore, unless he wants to play for under a million dollars which would still mean he's overpaid, but whatever.
As stated, we could use Deng for some minutes here and there, and I would also like to chase Marvin Williams. He'll be 28, he's more a stretch, but he's also exactly what we seem to get lucky with. Former lottery pick, doesn't grasp a role, and then he dons the purple and gold and poof, he remembers how to play basketball. He's not too expensive, and I doubt the Jazz care if he stays or not since they have an entire roster of 25 and unders growing.
Wes can also fill in minutes here, if we miss any, Deng, Williams, whoever we miss out on.
C, Hill and Sacre appear to be holding their own for now. I don't expect that to last long. I suppose it would be nice if they could both stay effective, we'd need to find a new Center to be the actual starter, and maybe, just maybe, we adjust the idea at PG I had, and use the draft pick on a Center, provided we pull Lowry. If we miss on Lowry, and aren't sure on Rondo in 2015, I would prefer the draft pick be used on a PG to match the league wide future of PG's everywhere.
Or, if we are lucky and Dumars screws up, he lets Greg Monroe hit the market. 6-11, will be 24 next year, can play the Center spot, I would make a run at him even as a RFA and see what Dumars has in mind.
Lowry 28- Farmar 28
Kobe 36 -Stephenson 24 -Xavier 23
Deng 29 - Wes 27
Marvin 28 - Hill 26 (Love in 2015)
Monroe 24 - Sacre 25
Still in fold, Meeks at 26, Nick Young at 29, Ryan Kelly at 23 and then Draft Pick 2014, either PG or C depending on how we target free agency. We'd need to keep 1-2 of these pieces to fill out the roster. Then in 2015 try to land K-Love.
In a sense, I keep most of the bench the same, Farmar, X, Wes, Hill, Sacre, and just get 4 new starters out there with old man river 48 million. Nash, Pau, Kaman, Blake, all died, and whatever the hell a Shawne Williams was is no more.
If we pulled Monroe, and 2014 pick is a PG, our core going forward becomes Love, Monroe, 2014 PG, and Stephenson, with maybe X bein a part of that as well as he's only 24-25 by then. With Deng, Kobe, Lowry the elders in town for a couple years. And I suspect we would still have money to pursue more after 2015 as Monroe, Lance, and X aren't huge extension guys, and 2014 pick would be rookie contract for a couple years (ie, cheap) Love is the only max, and it would be in Kobe's final season as a 25Mil anchor. 2016 should be free for spending, like on say Kevin Durant.
Would just need to move Deng/Lowry depending on their deals/terms by that time. (And again, that's provided we somehow managed to pull both)
The dream of 2-3 Max deals + Kobe + 2014 Draft pick is gone, so having to start all over, this is my first go round at who/what I would like to see. Since they gave Kobe 48 million dollars, they'd likely piss all over this idea and just write and even bigger check for Pau and Nash at which point I become a homicidal lunatic recently laid off post office worker with a grudge and a fully automatic weapon. But hey....
Anyways, I'm rambling, but I kept the bench mostly in tact sea manup.
