[:: J. COLE THREAD | DREAMVILLE's ROTD3 ALBUM OUT NOW!! ::]

Fellow '09er here... With Cole being my fav artist out since then, BS is just a huge let down to me cause like licensed said, he's better than this...

This is why the die Harders are disapointed, cause we know what he's capable of and it seems like he shorted not only the fans, but himself on this... Yes he was spitting on this, but there's not ONE song that he absolutely bodied like say a, Farewell ? It's a good album, but it has no replay value, and there's not ONE song on BS that makes u say "man I need to throw BS on to hear that joint." It's a chill album smooth to kick it to.

Looks like he's going to need someone to once again approach him and tell him " You gotta come harder than that son, you gotta come harder than that" for his 3rd album.

We now judge every hip hop album off GKMC until something surpasses it.. this did not. Huge cole fan, but I cant escape the feeling of being let down. Album does have some records but NOT what i was expecting.. Sophomore Jinx? all the greats felt it (cept BIG)

Outkast's Sophomore was ATLiens
Kanye's was Late Registration
Pac's was Strictly which had I Get Around & Keep Ya Head Up
so naw...it's not necessary nor should it be expected.

and setting any album as a standard is silly.

it's a different album. different beats. rhymes. concepts. all that.

Think he was just focusing on J cole current class... Wiz, Kendrick, J cole, Big krit, stalley, wale, Mac Miller, Asap

Kendrick kind of is setting the bar for these rappers.

Wiz and Wale are the most popular out of the camp, (LyonBC! mention earlier Kendricks leading when it comes to: lyrical ability, storytelling, and a fantastic ear for sound and cohesion with production

I'd say the standard would be projects like illmatic, reasonable doubt, blackstar, train of thought, college dropout, Late Reg, Dont Sweat The Technique etc... But we're focusing on the new class here.. Who cole is competing with..

It's like when drake came out with So Far Gone< Changed the mixtape game

Yeah, Kendrick is leading this "new class" but Cole is definitely in the second slot for me (ab soul is :x too but Cole is much more well known). GKMC was such a dope project I don't even think its a slight to say BS or even CW:SLS aren't as good as that album. That, in my opinion, will grow to be one of this generation's classic albums (gotta wait and see the longevity of it in 5-10 yrs, but that had universal love).

I really didn't think people loved Cole World like that though. I thought it was a very strong debut but it included some old tracks we all heard before, and there were at least 3-4 skips for me...Born Sinner as I keep listening has maybe 1 or 2

I'd rank his work like this: The Warm Up > The Come Up >/= Born Sinner > Cole World >/= Friday Night Lights (Truly Yours projects I'm not counting but they're probably right behind Warm Up as a whole) ...keep in mind I thought Cole World was like a solid 8/10 so I didn't think it was trash by any means...but maybe I'm in the minority though :lol

I think/hope this does even better numbers than Cole World though, Cole deserves it :smokin

EDIT: Meant to say >/= for FNL

Why is FNL so low in your ranking?

^^

Honestly, it's just the one I listen to the least out of his catalog...its still very good but I meant to say = Cole World :lol lemme fix that. I don't even look at it as being that much of a drop off from his Warm Up tape, I just think that one is his very best ever, he had that hunger and wanted to show and prove and was :eek when I first heard it, sooooo many great tracks. I can definitely see how others would disagree though (I think its like 8/10) and Warm Up for me is like a 9/10 if not a little more. I STILL rock Warm Up songs on those random days I'm just looking for something to listen to while I clean up or just drive or when I was walking to class. With FNL its kinda how I view Graduation by Ye, its reallly good (especially compared to other artists) but compared to all his other work, I like it the least...even though I still like it.

I'm kinda curious how would y'all rank Cole's stuff so far though? Those who have heard BS too 8o

My ranking goes:

Warm Up > FNL > Cole World

I haven't heard Born Sinner yet, patiently waiting for the deluxe version and higher quality. Haven't heard Crooked Smile or that song with Miguel yet either.

I would place Truly Yours in front of FNL based on how the third version sounds.

my thoughts exactly cole has been my fav since he killed that wale song but this , I can't get jiggy with this the production, idk doesn't seem like the same person hungry on the come up seems like he don't want to be the best no more

For me:

The Warm up ≥  The Come up > Friday Night Lights > Side Line Story > Born Sinner

I honestly haven't listened to Truly Yours because SLS was a let down... I was hoping Cole would deliver with BS

Born Sinner has virtually no replay value at all :\

I agree.

I am a BIG Cole fan... all the way back to dreamville blogspot days.

But I am willing to admit my boy dropped a dud

This is a grown man's album. The average hip hop fan wont appreciate this. This feels like a 90s album. I dig it completely.

Cole's music has matured tenfold. Its nice to see an artist evolve rather than remain stagnant and regurgitate the same ish on every subsequent album.

This!!!
Man this album is Niceeeeeeeee

I wouldn't go THAT far yo.

CMON... You really think The Come Up is better than Born Sinner?
He's progressed so far...although its dull in some parts and like i said i know he can do better, its not worse than the Come Up.

It has a few songs that will have replay value.
Trouble, She Knows, Let Nas Down, Runaway are really REALLY good songs.
Those 4 alone stand out than anything NOT NAMED "lil ghetto *****" on The Come Up.

She Knows can be a massive single too... if its promoted right.
It can be huge in arenas when he's performing this summer.

Cole has improved a lot, but unfortunately some of his song choices for the album were just bad.

Cole sounds more NY than most current NY rappers. I'm feeling this album as a head who grew up on 90's rap.

Just heard the single crooked smiles and damn that **** is :smokin

So many mixed reviews in here, the few tracks I've heard I've liked. I'll post an opinion once I hear it in full when I get home from y Gov Ball trip, but you guys got me real worried. Coming from an 09 Cole fan as well.

Excluding The Come Up I think it's fair to say this is his worse overall project. And even including The Come Up its tied for worse. Lil Ghetto N_ alone is better than anything on this album.

Cole could do so much better but he insists on being average. I thought he really was gonna be the next up, but I've realized he just doesn't want that.

Yo i was also in this thread since 09 and posted that his debut (CWST) should have no features, got a lot of hate. seems like he did it with his sophomore joint.

Album is good the more you listen to it, some one said it earlier it grows on you...big time. Ive listened to it on my way to work for the past week now, and must say im pretty attached. Cole's stuff is a lil deeper than surface value. I mean its not so deep that you miss it when you first hear it, but it becomes way more coherent on the third listen.

Overall great album, great effort. Not GKMC, but they are different calibers of rappers. Each one has their own style and you have to appreciate the way they both do it, or else you will never just enjoy music. Which is what it is all about.
