The movie was about as expected. Pratt was okay, but nothing special. Zaldana gave a typical solid action performance. Bautista's performance was the weakest, but wasn't horrible. Groot and RR were obviously the highlights of the film. Ronan was a great looking villain, but in the end, was only slightly better than Malekith. There were a couple good jokes in there, but it wasn't the comedy I was hearing about. Soundtrack was great but I thought it was too much of a focus (a la Braff's Garden State).
I know that Gunn probably thought the post-credits scene was funny, but I hated it. I was hoping for more of a tease to the Avengers. Whatever, at least I got to see Thanos.
I would say that I'm surprised that a second has already been announced, but given the fact that it will be a year after AoU, it may be able to use their momentum to get a bigger box office return. IMO though, they should just integrate Groot and RR into their more mainstream films. UNLESS, they decide to actually explore the Marvel cosmic universe.
And about the whole "going to movies by yourself" discussion, I don't see an issue with it and actually prefer it. Then again, most of my friends of family aren't into film as much as I am. I'm the type that goes in early and is anal about finding the perfect spot to sit. I actually care about the trailers while my friends/family do not. I also hate being asked questions during the movie.
Also, the Interstellar trailer looked and sounded amazing in IMAX.
