Formula 1 2008 Post

Yeah it was the incident with Alonso that really put Lewis in a hole. I thought he could still selvage a point but there weren't many DNF's in thisrace and the rear tire degradation on his car didn't help either.

though the aerial shots of the track where

yes sir. speed channel needs to do that more often, as well as cockpit views so that the viewers can get a better feel for the track.

i was pulling for kubica.

^The television feed Speed (and other stations worldwide) uses are those of the local television station which the FIA race director controls. The aerial shots(especially at Bahrain) were very nice but in no way does Speed have any control on the images they show.

we need to get the director up in a blimp, because looking at a track from that view is amazing.

wishful thinking.

Does Speed broadcast F1 in 16:9 (widescreen)?

new info on the Lewis/Alonso incident...

According to ITV...

A new reason for Hamilton driving into the back of the R28 has now emerged, with McLaren's CEO Martin Whitmarsh confirming the team later discovered hisMP4-23's front wing had already dislodged seconds before the contact. This would have meant the car suddenly lost both downforce and drag, potentiallycausing a sudden burst of acceleration.
The Spanish Grand Prix Preview - a voyage into the unknown
If you were hoping that the times set during the recent test session at Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya were going to provide a meaningful index toperformance in this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix, you no doubt you came away disappointed.

Felipe Massa was fastest for Ferrari on the first day, but ran on 2009-specification slicks. Fernando Alonso and Rubens Barrichello each had a day atop thetimesheets, for Renault and Honda respectively, and Mark Webber dominated the wet final day for Red Bull.

What did it all mean in the end? Only that everyone had a chance to do what they wanted, and in some cases that was not to set fast lap times.

Ferrari had a 'new' nose, with an air release slot not dissimilar to that pioneered on Formula One cars in 1968 as designers sought to exhaust hot airfrom front-mounted radiators, and very close to the purely aerodynamic function of the 1980 Lotus 80. Whether it will make a dramatic difference is currentlyopen to debate, but the team's aerodynamicist Nicholas Tombazis was careful not to let people get over-excited about it.

"The influence on car performance of the slotted nose has been greatly over emphasised," Tombazis told reporters. "You cannot measure the effectof one component in isolation and the nose is just one part of a bigger package and in fact, its effect is not that big. Overall, we expect the new aeropackage to produce some improvement in performance, but it would be wrong to call it a race-winning item."

Everyone nevertheless hopes that their upgraded mechanical and aerodynamic packages will make them more competitive here. McLaren were cautious, after whatappeared to be an inconclusive test. Lewis Hamilton did not set particularly quick lap times, but said he remains buoyant ahead of the start of the Europeanseason despite the errors that made Bahrain his worst-ever showing in Formula One racing and cost him his lead in the world championship as he failed to score.

"For sure, you learn something in every race, even if you win," he said as he prepares to bounce back. "I think we have come a long way andlooking into the next race I feel very confident that we can do a better job."

Referring to the updates on his McLaren MP4-23, he said: "There were a few but not a lot, but we definitely made some steps forward and I think at thistest everyone is doing something different. Some people are running slick tyres and some people are running grooves. We just focused on our job and I think thecar feels a little better and I feel a little bit more comfortable in it. We feel quite strong here."

BMW Sauber are riding the crest of a wave of unexpected success right now, and lead the constructors' championship, but boss Mario Theissen isn'tgetting carried away just yet.

"The next race in Barcelona will be pretty interesting for two reasons," he explained. "The track is very relevant to what we see for the restof the year, and on the other hand, every team will have a development package for Barcelona. So after Barcelona we will be able to say where we reallyare."

Honda and Williams made encouraging noises about their performance, as did Red Bull, Toyota look quietly effective yet again, but Renault frankly admitted thatthe performance of the updated R28 disappointed, Alonso's fastest time notwithstanding.

Ferrari may be the current pacesetters, but they say they are expecting a tough fight. "We come to Spain with every reason to be optimistic, after wins inMalaysia and Bahrain," said team principal Stefano Domenicali. "Testing here went well and we hope to keep our momentum moving forward. However, ourrivals have not been twiddling their thumbs either, so we can expect a tough fight which we will tackle as usual with maximum concentration at every stage ofthe weekend."

Kimi Raikkonen relishes coming to Europe as championship leader for the first time in his career, and is keen to repeat is 2005 victory. "We have all thecomponents in place to be very competitive," he says but, echoing his team boss, he adds: "It will be a very tough weekend."

Back in Australia, and again in Malaysia, McLaren boss Ron Dennis stressed that the true picture of the 2008 world championship would not become apparent untilthe start of the European leg. "We don't really know what our pace is at the moment," he said in Melbourne. "We won't really know howcompetitive our car is until after Barcelona. Australia, Malaysia and Bahrain are very different circuits and do not reflect the true pace of the car.Barcelona will be where it is all at."

Welcome to the latest showdown.

I agree... long straights, sweeping corners with the occasional hairpins... but I didn't like the 'new' chicane before turn 13... safety first Iguess...

Hmm...

WRC and F1 on the same weekend.

Lets see, BMW will start in the front row but will end up behind Ferrari and McLaren. Toyota will be in the points. Both Redbulls will DNF. Alonslo will end upeither in the 8th spot or will be fighting a Honda for the last spot. However, I have a feeling one Honda will DNF.

Both Super Aguris will finish the race.

* a tyre failure caused Kovalainen to crash into the Turn 9 tyre wall at 140mph...
frown.gif
though he is reported to be ok... meanwhile, Alonso had a DNF due to an engine failure...

I wish Heikki a speedy recovery. That crash was scary looking and looking at Circuit de Catalunya, there are places where there is only the thinly"padded" walls or concrete walls so it could've been disastrous. Kimi did an absolutely fantastic job and I hope the scuderia can keep it up.
laugh.gif
at Kimi for taking that huge gulp of the good stuff (make that 2)before the local dignitaries even cleared the podium, almost makes you wonder if he's in it just for the champagne. It'll be interesting to see if VMM,having the shorter wheelbase than the Ferraris, will dominate at Monaco just like last year but first onto Istanbul!

The scary part about Kovy's crash was how the quick the medical car came out, which is never a good sign... but at the end all seems to beok... notice on the on-board footage how his front-left just explodes...

The only real surprise is Heikki, but I just don't have confidence that he'll perform come race time sadly. As long as Massa keeps his head togetherand doesn't suffer a mechanical failure/accident, I don't see anyone taking it from him. This is one of three circuits in the season that I haven'tdriven and I REALLY REALLY want to experience turn 8 but Turkey just isn't a place I feel comfortable traveling to at the moment. Oh well, some day.

there you guys are... I was beginning to feel like I was the only one in the room...

interesting note is that Hamilton ran all his Q3 laps in the harder prime tyre, while the rest used the option... He also had a bit of 'a moment'during the middle of turn 8, which might have cost some time... Massa's prolly running 18 laps, while Kimi's running heavy... 20-22?

Curt - you've driven? gamewise I suppose? or moonlight as a gp driver?

Granted I'm sure even fewer people here watch gp2 than the actual gp, bruno senna got royally screwed. I mean what the hell are the odds that a dog runs onthe track? I remember last season in canada when anthony davidson hit that groundhog and that was crazy, but a dog?! Really? And sinnerP, I've done someprofessional driving (but was STRONGLY held back from it by my parents who wanted me to go the school route and I'm fine with that now. I still spend agood amount of time driving for enjoyment or in "gentlemen's contests" at track days.
