Elon Musk trying to buy Twitter (edit: deal has been finalized)

-Again, I see this as a median vs. margin

I think people are aware of what little impact Twitter has on the median person (in the public and on Twitter). But as we have seen in recent years, you don't need to convince the median person for things to go bad.

The concern is not about persuading someone to flip political sides, or flipping on an issue.

But more about convincing the partisan (mostly male) that generally agrees with you, that they need to escalate the situation.

I think Twitter can still be a tool to send people down rabbit holes that leads to really bad places. Ideologically staying the same, but making them more reactionary

I think it was Steve Bannon that said it one time, that he isn't really trying to make people change their worldview. He is just trying to convince some people to cross a few lines.

-But of course, I would do that trade you mentioned before. Because Fox News, Sinclair, and AM radio move the median. Which at the end of the day has way more impact on democracy.

But worrying about how **** like Qanon and Pizzgate spread is now part of our political reality too. I don't think people realizing that makes them lose cite of the bigger engines driving extremist

i get what your saying, but even at the margin, something like TikTok has way more of a rabbit hole effect than Twitter just by the nature of the platform.
ultimately I think in the age of mass communication, extremists of all kind can connect and communicate.
and amplify their extremism.

i just don't think there is moderation regime on Twitter that will meaningfully impact this dynamic even on the margins.
and like I said I think it can backfire by hiding the underbelly of the conservative movement from the public.

working with social media platforms for marketing in my job, you quickly learn that twitter is just such a specific audience.
I would bet the main way the algorithm amplifies hate speech, is a liberal quote tweeting and dunking on said hate speech.

Nothing about this refutes what I said. large and small is relative.
Twitter as far as social media platforms goes is small.

and it is not a "public square" it's not a representation of the public.
it's a relatively narrow cross section of the public, that skews younger and more educated.

most people don't tweet.

we know from social science research that highly educated ideological people are some of the least persuadable people politically.
so forgive me if I don't think these moderation decisions matter that much.
You fundamentally misunderstand the term public square: it's not a slice representative of society, it's a place where ANYONE can come to express their views.

Social media is such a space, except that it's not physical. The socioeconomic attributes of users are irrelevant.

This.

We've seen many examples of ideological actors pushing partisans over the edge online (starting with forums), so nobody can argue that what is being said online doesn't matter.

are people familiar with this florida qb child porn story?

imagine if some moron at twitter decided for everyone that these news stories themselves were "child porn" and that all discussion about these stories should be banned/bannable

If it is a public square the way you describe it, rather than a private club

You buttress the arguments AGAINST moderation, and you essentially you'll lead many people to take Elons position.

No speech should be banned except what is already illegal.

It's not illegal to be a Nazi in public.

Off topic

Didn’t even know YouTube was considered a social network

And more surprising that Facebook has more users than YouTube

I think we underestimate the massive amount of moderation (or policing, if you prefer) that is constantly ongoing at all these social networking websites. The bigger they are, the more there is to deal with. There are tons of spammers, institutions, and countries putting in effort and money to spam and manipulate Twitter, Facebook, etc.

Also, it's not just about removing hate speech. A lot of it is bots or other accounts just trying to drown out normal discourse. Which I think we also tend to underestimate. This has nothing to do with free speech or violence but about making a website enjoyable. So Twitter and Facebook and others have a strong interest in making sure users have a good experience on their website.

NT is a good example of this. A lot of why it survives is that the admins don't tolerate hateful speech in here, but it's also about not letting people flood the forums with nonsense. At the end of the day, it's all about content.

There’s a warrant for his arrest

Yoooo people are witty as hell man! That lady’s response is like Doctorate level ETHER! If I was famous, no way in hell could I try and act like Musk on there. Like millions of people a thousand times smarter than me just clapping back all damn day.

Elon took the helm a few months ago, and all of the sudden there’s an increase?
Twitters been terrible since before Trump, I’ve literally watched it in real time. I got twitter first in 2009.

Twitter users are declining, twitters most active users are declining, yet…. The hate speech is increasing?

So basically the people who were ALREADY tweeting nonsense, just all of a sudden started tweeting more? You cannot blame Elon/Twitter on SOCIETY. Twitter reflects society.

But hey, Elon is responsible for these idiotic adults.

It’s not rocket science. A bunch of angry bigots got their accounts back. Elon decimated any moderation controls.

End of discussion

I agree Twitter is a cesspool of angry people.

the great thing about twitter going through a transformation phase is that everyone gets to relearn how twitter does and does not work

assuming that this andrew wortman has reported said post and that twitter decides to investigate said post..

he can file a police report about people being in danger and then even share that police report with twitters safety team and the twitter community

if someone genuinely believed that people were in danger, they would file a police report and/or notify the relevant authorities right?

the people who tricked him into doing this whole thing are laughing their *** off all the way to the bank.

He’s not tricked. It’s intentional.

Read up btw:

Them PayPal & Silicon Valley dudes a trip. Real evil.

They’re running the same play. AGAIN

Glenn = Guccifer/Intercept/Lavo Jato
Snowden = NSA Leaks/Intercept
Assange = Wikileaks/Seth Rich/Pizzagate etc
Taibbi = Twitter bs

These dudes are cutouts. Deceptively reporting bits and pieces of “leaks” to fit a narrative. All funded by billionaires and given access to info, to spin/launder. Classic propaganda network. You see them in real time in lock step btw.
