Dressing Better Vol 2.0

I have friends with business degrees and they go into interviews wearing black suits. My brother does as well. I doubt the interviewer looks at them negatively for wearing it and not following the idea that the internet hates black suits. People always say there aren't rules for clothes but then they say there things you shouldn't wear.

Father is a CEO, cousin is an HR manager, and my aunt is a recruiter for big oil. During the holidays they get together and talk about peps during interviews. One think they all agree on is a black suit. They said its the younger generation that come in fresh off the red carpet. It's all fine and dandy, but they generally dont give a damn. Especially if you intimidate the interviewer or the interview is crap. In the HR world they will tell other HR friends about you at other companies. I had a good friend learn the hard way. I told him a black suit and he just couldn't figure why he couldnt land a good job. His first was crap and other HR managers say him coming from a mile away. I know this because he interviewed with on my pops friends. He switched and got the job.

Black shows conformity, any other may suggest you may be a problem.

I can see suits other than black working in some interviews for certain jobs and in certain parts of the country. If you are a business major, you better be wearing a black suit. Especially in the south.

They said its the younger generation that come in fresh off the red carpet.

So they come in wearing fitted suits as opposed to someone who is older than might be wearing a sack suit? It's about personal preference so I don't see this being a problem, especially for a younger person who may only have a single suit that they wear for several functions.

Especially if you intimidate the interviewer

Intimidate? Do you mean if you try to flaunt by wearing cufflinks, loud pocket square, Hermes tie, etc?

I told him a black suit and he just couldn't figure why he couldnt land a good job.

So your friend would have gotten a job if he wore a black suit over a navy or charcoal? That's funny considering this:

It's all fine and dandy, but they generally dont give a damn.

You're friend likely wasn't cut for the job.

other HR managers say him coming from a mile away

Care to elaborate?

He switched and got the job.

Again, care to elaborate? Was it the same exact position, location and interviewer with the only variable being the suit color?

I'm not trying to go at you or hate, I'm just trying to look for clarification. You seem to be black or bust(word to Kim K) when it comes to suit colors for an interview. I understand how it might be acceptable but you make it seem like it's a necessity.

Btw...hope you guys enjoy this. Ended up walking over to the diner on campus tonight with my girl. Since it was a quick trip, figured there was no reason to throw on a tie ( :lol ) so I busted out a classic fit I would've rocked maybe just two years back just for old times sake..hope you all enjoy

yes, I know this has nothing to do with DB, I just posted for da lulz
Man, there is nothing wrong with the outfit at all! It fits in this thread fine because everything fits you properly. Thumbs up.

Exactly!

:eek everything makes sense why you're alway super dressed to the tee for rather menial events

You really perceived this outfit combo as NOT Dressing Better when like Wis said, it's a perfectly fine fit. Proportionality and fit throughout.

What Etsy? I don't live in LA anymore

Just speaking from experience, when I was younger I was 155 and 5'10 and I was a 40. Then again I'm also incredibly broad :lol
I'm 5'9'' at 155 lbs (raw) 160 lbs (walking weight) and my chest only measures 37". :lol

Damn man. I'm where I want to be now, 6'1 and 185 lbs, and wearing a 42R in most suits. All of my outerwear is 44 though, 42 is much too small.

Yeah good looking on that site but they looked way too feminin for me...i was looking for something more of this kind....

Nice fits for both dude.

It's a social convention that black suits are reserved for formal events and funerals. If someone walks into an interview I'm conducting and they're wearing a black suit, I'm thinking they are either an idiot and if this convention went over their head, who knows what else might OR they are simply trying to defy this convention and if that's the case then that's not someone I would want working under me.

It's a frickin' job interview - play it safe.
You're assuming someone is an idiot 'cause they wear a black suit to an interview?! That's one of the stupidest thing I've ever heard (with all due respect). Everyone doesn't prescribe to black suits are only for funerals. If you are in a position to hire people, please reconsider your no black suits rule. It's illogical.

Position I have now I wore a black/pinstripe suit to interview. I likely won't do it for my next position but I did it and got the job. Ok. Good luck finding the best man for the job while eliminating them based on suit color.

RE: Black suits

I agree they're not nearly as versatile as navy, grey, etc but I think the rhetoric about only wearing them if you're a waiter or to a funeral is overstated. I'm with ksteezy that they're just more formal, I wouldn't wear one to an interview but for a night, indoor, formal wedding it's appropriate, can be worn to a nice dinner, made a little more casual with a light blue shirt, etc.
I only own one black suit while I have 3 different shades/materials/patterns of grey, 2 navy & a few others.

Latest pickup. :hat

:hat Those look great!

These look great man.

Casual friday for me today at work.....shoes camo into the carpet

There's a lot of different angles being taken in this argument. At the end of the day, is a suit color a deal breaker? Probably not. However, if you're making the conscious attempt to purchase a single suit that you will be wearing to job interviews, networking receptions, upscale dinners, etc. then you are much better served buying a charcoal or navy suit as opposed to black.

Whoa. Thread is moving fast. Too much to compute via cell. Will come back when on CPU :lol

While I do believe the fit was proportionally sound, what you guys aren't getting is that that's not my style anymore. Fit is absolutely fine, but I don't like the whole fitted cap and graphic tee look anymore. Though you guys believe I over do certain fits for everyday tasks, it's my style and how I carry myself now. If tees and jeans is you, by all means. Just not my cup of tea as often. *kanyeshrug*

ill join Adrian with the casual look, unlike him though, this is me 70% of the time though...lol

i need to invest in more shoes...lol

wore this yesterday

no matter which way you cut it i think we can all agree a navy suit is probably the most versatile you can have, but all three (navy, charcoal, black) are pretty important and pretty much all you need as a suit rotation, once youve gotten those three you have tons of combinations, once youve gotten those essential 3 you can then focus on all the other different colors, fabrics, styles you want.

RE: the black suit convo

All the directors and program managers at my hospital wear black so idk not saying any of them are hip to the fashion boards but they wear black just as much as navy or grey. I think it is personal preference honestly but black shirts i cant get on that train

^steezy I wanna see a normal lace job from you.

Talking about needing to invest in more shoes you better be getting loafers if you're gonna take your lace jobs into dressing better...
Lol bro the Steezy lace debate is as old as NT itself :lol
