I really thought Ted Cruz would do better in the South.
The problem for Cruz is that he needed to get a super majority of evangelicals and he couldn't even do that, in fact Trump got more evangelical votes than Cruz.
I believe that among some evangelicals, they really do believe that abortion is murder and that the path to paradise involves putting the Us embassy in Jerusalem. or a majority of evangelicals, however, their faith is a marker of cultural identity. It is just another way to declare the primacy of wealth, whiteness and masculinity. Their church selects the biblical passages that can be interpreted to mean that middle aged, white, slightly sexist, upper-middle class insurance salesmen, who style themselves as rugged outdoors men happen to be God's chosen people.
Trump fits right in with that version of evangelical Christianity as he plays the role of domineering provider and patriarch.
