NBA tells teams Miles free to be signed
Despite the Portland Trail Blazers' efforts to dissuade teams from signing Darius Miles, the NBA sent out a memo on Friday morning that makes clear it won't stand in the way of the free-agent forward's return to the league.
The league notified teams on Friday that Miles had cleared waivers and is eligible to be signed to a standard contract. "Any such contract," the league wrote in the email, "would be approved by the NBA."
"What they're saying is: 'Don't let that scare you off,' " said one Eastern Conference GM who had received the memo.
An NBA spokesman wasn't immediately available to respond for comment or clarification regarding the memo.
The Memphis Grizzlies waived Miles on Tuesday after he played in two games for them. If Miles plays in two more games, the remaining $18 million of his contract will go back on the Trail Blazers' salary cap.
Blazers president Larry Miller sent out an email to every NBA team threatening possible legal action should Miles be signed for the "purpose of adversely impacting the Portland Trail Blazers' salary cap and tax positions."

Cavs owner upset with Blazers' threat
The Portland Trail Blazers' threat to possibly sue any team that signs free-agent forward Darius Miles has created a firestorm of reaction around the league.
Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert emailed Blazers president Larry Miller to say he took exception with Portland's threat.
Yahoo! Sports obtained Gilbert's email because it was carboned to the rest of the league's owners and executives.
"With all due respect…although the Cleveland Cavaliers have no interest in signing Darius Miles and will not be signing Darius Miles," Gilbert wrote, "I find your email quite peculiar from two standpoints:
"1. It's dead wrong. I believe that all 30 NBA teams were and are fully aware of the terms and provisions of the collective bargaining agreement as to which all teams and the NBA are a party to, including the Portland Trailblazers.
"2. Are legal threats through a mass email the best way to circumvent the known potential consequences that could result from the Trailblazers decisions and actions they took with respect to Darius Miles?
"I fully understand the frustration you and your team's ownership must be feeling in regards to this situation, but a preemptive threat of 'litigation' directed at all of your partners through a group email does not sit well with me and seems to be incongruent with the spirit of keeping a 'fiduciary duty' and good 'partner-like duty' to your 'NBA joint venturers.'
"I would think there has got to be a better tactic than this one."

The Portland Trail Blazers sent an email to rival team executives late Thursday threatening possible litigation to any franchise that signs free-agent forward Darius Miles for the "purpose of adversely impacting the Portland Trail Blazers' salary cap and tax positions."
The email cites Wednesday's Yahoo! Sports report that if Miles plays in two more games this season, the remaining $18 million on his contract goes back on the Blazers' payroll.
"The Portland Trail Blazers are aware that certain teams may be contemplating signing Darius Miles to a contract for the purpose of adversely impacting the Portland Trail Blazers Salary Cap and tax positions," Blazers president Larry Miller wrote in the email to representatives of every NBA team. "Such conduct by a team would violate its fiduciary duty as an NBA joint venturer. In addition, persons or entities involved in such conduct may be individually liable to the Portland Trail Blazers for tortuously interfering with the Portland Trail Blazers contract rights and perspective economic opportunities.
"Please be aware that if a team engages in such conduct, the Portland Trail Blazers will take all necessary steps to safeguard its rights, including, without limitation, litigation."
Teams had been under the impression the collective bargaining agreement demanded that Miles play 10 regular-season or postseason games for the $18 million - which is split evenly between this and next season - to return to the Blazers' payroll. But the league office confirmed to Yahoo! Sports that the six preseason games that Miles played for the Boston Celtics counts toward the 10. Before the Memphis Grizzlies waived him on Tuesday night to avoid guaranteeing his contract for the rest of the season, Miles played two regular-season games that pushed him to eight total.
"They're daring someone to sign him now," said one Western Conference GM who had seen the email from the Blazers.
Any team in the NBA can sign Miles to a 10-day contract, play him twice and punch out one of the summer's top free-agent destinations. The Blazers are a prime destination for free agents, and the cap space also made them a fierce competitor for sign-and-trade deals. If Miles returns to the salary cap, he also will push Portland into the luxury tax. That means every team under the tax would benefit with about $250,000 of revenue sharing from Portland.
"The point that everybody is missing is that this isn't about Portland's salary cap. It's about whether this guy [Miles] is healthy enough to play or not," said an Eastern Conference executive. "He obviously is healthy enough to play. It doesn't matter how good he plays. He can still play, and they said he couldn't.
"Portland received benefits when [Miles'] injury was ruled career-ending. If he can play, they don't deserve to have those benefits."
If Miles can still play how come he didn't stick around in Boston or Memphis and didn't even play any significant minuets? An INDEPENDENT doctor from the NBA PLAYERS UNION made the decision that Miles INJURIES were career ending. To say that statement was false means the Union appointed doctor lied, not the Portland Trail Blazers. It seems the teams that did sign him did so just to get him to play games. It doesn't appear that anyone really wants him on their team. Do any of you really want DMILES on your favorite team?!?!
Memphis cutting Miles had nothing to do with him not being able to play anymore. Darko got hurt so they felt they needed another big man to step in. Ibelieve he also got cut from the Celtics because they chose Bill Walker over him and he got in trouble early on in the season. Im by no means saying theBlazers are lying, but what they are doing right now is downright grimey. First off the Blazers were the ones who called for Miles to be examined for a careerending injury and I really find it hard to believe that the Blazers had no say in who the doctor was. Bottomline, he can still play which is the opposite ofwhat the independent doctor said so they shouldnt get any benefits from the doctors mistake.

dmiles is already collecting his millions owed to him by the blazers, his contract was not voided. this is an issue regarding whether or not his salary will be counted towards the blazers salary cap

Yes, I know this. Instead of quoting part of a sentence, quote the whole thing so you see what I was talking about.
In the sentence, I was saying that they regretted the deal they gave him. Soon as he signed it, every penny was going to be paid, one way or another. Theywent after insurance money and cap relief, now it's biting them in the butt if he makes it back for 2 more games.
If I'm the Nuggets, and in their division and a rival and have Melo on the shelf for a few weeks, I sign him. What do they have to lose playing him in acouple garbage time games and screwing over a division rival in the process?
