Sellout is a [EDIT: hard STRONG ] term to use.
I am actually waiting to cop the album because I have been really wanting to get into this topic as it relates to Common. Even before the album hit the net,folks in "the streets" (READ: the net) have been going in on the first single and using the same term.

Just finished listening to this album. Oh boy. If folks blame Badu for Electric Circus, can we blame Serena Williams for this?? lol Makes sense to make analbum of booty music when you dating the queen of booty.

My stance -- Common been around since 1989.. Officially 1991 I think.
It's 2009 in a few weeks. So, I've literally grew up on this dude... literally.
If he had to do this to finally reach plat. status, then God bless him.
Redman went through the same thing (less albums, but)...
It comes at a price, but also at a premium. How many "mainstream" people will now go and flock to his old stuff due to this "MTV" release? Plenty.
How many "real" fans will Common lose? I think none. He'll be back at it next LP.
You can't get with the "Kufi" rap... Then he too confused musically... Then he can't make it without 'Ye... Now he's a sellout.
Urgh.

From the NT FBI, "DMV" division:
