One of the reasons why I chose to be a physical therapist. When you are in school and practicing, you realize that you arent just treating a person's impairment, you are treating the person. Encapsulating physical and psychological. Listening, personality, and therapeutic touch goes a long way. This speech displays that. That's why our health care delivery has gone to ****.

I'm sitting, and how's that an attack? Relax, it's nowhere near that serious. I'm addressing this prevailing notion in the thread that what he did/suicide in general is selfish. Selfishness is a choice. You fellas have to learn to not take everything to heart.

Sometimes the choices we make are for selfish reasons.

No one is attacking your opinion, he/she is just simply stating that calling people who commit suicide "selfish" is not the best choice of words

I don't care, it's the truth how I see it, in my opinion what he did was selfish, that doesn't mean you have to agree with it.

TO ME to take your own life knowing the pain it'll bring your kids is selfish, you seek to end your own suffering yet bring heartache to those closest to you?

Plus you've now shown them this as a way out if things get tough for them as well, that's not an example i personally would want to set as a father.

That doesn't mean Robin was a bad person he just did what he thought he had to.

It was kind of a gift and a curse, he could make millions of people laugh and happy but not himself.

You don't know who or what I know, a kid I've know since high school hung himself almost 2 years ago, I'm very familiar with depression and I'm aware how tough it is, that doesn't change my opinion that if you have children it's selfish.

I had no idea expressing opinions on a sneaker message board was frowned upon,

everyone doesn't have to agree that's usually what a discussion is.

Now until i start disrespecting those with metal health issues or write them off in some fashion,

I'm going to ask that you shut the hell up and mind your damn business while you parade around on your high horse.

He made a decision based on what he thought was best for him, regardless of how it affected it his loved ones.

By definition that's selfish.

Doesn't make Robin a bad guy or mean he didn't care about his family.

It just means he thought this was his only way out, in fact I'm sure he thought of how it would affect his kids and wife, he just decided it's what he had to do.

I genuinely feel for anyone who becomes so unhappy or depressed that they believe they need to kill themselves,

but that doesn't mean I'm not allowed to have an opinion on the choice in itself, in no way am I saying his problems weren't real or portraying him as some sort of coward, I personally believes it takes a lot to actually kill yourself.

Bingo. The pain and dread of depression never lets a person shake free from such. Don't worry about mourning and not being able to move on, because many of those same people weren't in tune with the person enough anyway to notice an imbalance or at least pick up on the signs.

I spoke on my opinion of what he did, I never said he shouldn't have killed himself it's his life he can do as he pleases

I'm not saying he did anything wrong by killing himself, I don't think he would have done so if he saw another way out. I don't fault him for anything.

You can't choose to be depressed but you have a choice in how you handle it, for instance there are other posters in here who've struggled with depression as well but they went and got the help they needed that is courageous to me.

and I'm sure Robin fought his demons as long as he could, I just wish he could have fought longer is all

I am sure we have all done things that is abusive to our own health and even to others around us without really have a regard to it. I mean when people do tons of drugs or drink, are they thinking "man, if I OD'd right now, I'd be hurting a lot of people around me". Some people are just not in their right mind state to think about what their actions can do.

And curving depression can be as hard as quitting smoking cigarettes or alcohol. In theory, all you have to do is quit. You can even choose to handle it different ways. The patch, 12 step program, AA, etc.....but do people do it? No. Some people just don't have the will power and I'd imagine Robin Williams was one of those people that just wasn't as strong as we thought he could be.
