Boardwalk Empire: Episode 11 - â€

Nucky is playing both Margaret and the JO....however, for as dumb as the JO is she is the only one (between her and Margaret) who realizes it.

There is some SERIOUS friction between Jimmy and Al Capone. You could see this building from the first couple of times the two of them linked up. Jimmy is a smart man, but Capone is a loose cannon.

Anyone pick up on the jealousy theme with many of the characters?

Jimmy & Capone
Margaret & the JO
Nucky & his brother

I got a feeling that one of those characters will eventually be the downfall of the other....

Nah, whipping yourself is definitely an old-school Catholic thing. And Van Alden is previously shown to be very religious.

And his wife was also Irish. This caused a lot of problems in Capone's life.

I just want to state for the record that I predicted Jimmy being Nucky's son way back in like the second episode.
There definitely is some type of relationship between Jimmy's mom and Nucky. In some ways I think she is the only woman that Nucky has respect for.

I think he realizes that he has impure thoughts about Schroeder so hes doing this as a form of classical conditioning to "get rid" of these feelings for her.

Hes basically looking at the picture while hurting himself so that perhaps in the future anytime he sees her, he will always associate her image with pain, therefore getting rid of his desire for her.

Its an old pysychological thing I remember learning in high school.

I may just be reaching but anyone interested in this could just look up "classical conditioning".

That's exactly what I got from it.

@ ole girl's face when she realized she was a concubine.

hes self flagellating to schroeders photo
which is how he gets off
hes a sadist masochist (and a bit of a sadist too as he's always hitting people and putting his hands in gunshot wounds)
he plays it up as a religious thing but he's getting a sexual thrill from it as well and we're meant to pick up on that
remember how he smelled schroeder's handkerchief (undergarment?)
it's not classical conditioning though im sure if u asked the character hed try to reason it out that way
pain equals pleasure

I agree, not sure if it's been pointed out or if anyone noticed but for example at the begining of the last episode there is a scene showing the boardwalk, if you notice by the pier there's an ad billboard for Budweiser... so my wife goes, "Why is there a Budwieser ad during prohibition?", I'm like great observation and good question. Well, did a little quick reading online, didn't check the facts but apparently a couple things... Budweiser was one of th company that could financially go through prohibition, advertising wasn't illegal, and more significantly they manage to stay in business by selling other product like yeast if I'm not mistaking and a also a "lighter" beer.I know, I know, this has nothing to do with the show plot but I appreciate details. As for the show, I'm enjoying it! However, I feel it's a little slow at time, could use a little more action/excitement, some scenes are drawn out tooooo long (like Jimmy sobbing over the orange ad), some plots didnt get a follow-up (ie the hanging), and finally, my last complain would be they dumb it down toooooooooo much. Oh, wouldn't be surprised if the meat had poison... don't think they kill Jimmy off yet though, he's become a watcher favorite and more interesting. My bad for any typo or if some what I posted don't make sense, typing from iPhone (I'll edit if needed later).

hoopman-

Flagellation or flogging is the act of methodically beating or whipping (Latin flagellum, "whip") the human body. Specialised implements for it include rods, switches, the cat o' nine tails and the sjambok. Typically, flogging is imposed on an unwilling subject as a punishment; however, it can also be submitted to willingly, or performed on oneself, in religious or sadomasochistic contexts.

What are you talking about? The kid robbing the alderman in Sunday's episode is clearly related to the Italians that hanged the black kid. They're harassing Nucky and his people because Doyle owes them money. This was just the next step. Are you sure they're dumbing it down?
