Welcome to the first in a series of Battleblog posts taking you all the way to the launch of Battlefield 3 on October 25th! In this blog series, you’ll learn more about every aspect of our biggest shooter ever. First out is an overview of our multiplayer philosophy together with Lead Multiplayer Designer Lars Gustavsson.
When Lars Gustavsson received the mission to lead the design of the multiplayer portion of Battlefield 3, his thoughts went to the fans of the predecessor, 2005’s Battlefield 2. He also knew the time was ripe to open up the game to a wider audience.
Hi Lars! What was the initial design goal you and the team set for Battlefield 3 multiplayer?
-- We thought a lot about Battlefield 2 and how Battlefield 3 would relate to it. The mindset at DICE during the development of Battlefield 2 was pretty much: “Play the game our way, or play something else

This comparison cracked me up. I have yet to play Battlefield but will be picking up BF2 tomorrow and had planned to purchase BF3 in October. Over the past few years I have been solely a COD player as it was the first FPS and only FPS I have really played. However, I have been looking for more tactical/team play with a FPS and have heard good things about BF so I am intrigued to try it out. I am sure this pic/gif comparison is accurate though.Originally Posted by i3allistic

its much slower comparing to COD, the maps are bigger, wayyyy bigger. sniping is harder since there's a "bullet drop" the level changes since everything is destructible so if you find someone camping just blow a hole or the whole house. there's vehicles which you can ride on, which is always fun.Originally Posted by FlatbushFiyah23

How have others who transitioned to or just played Battlefield liked it in comparison to the COD series?

All of this sounds good and its the kind of FPS shooting I am craving...A bit slower and I prefer bigger maps to some of the really tight maps COD has. I also am really to see how the destructible environment plays with multiplayer.Originally Posted by ricerocket1
