FSU SETS NEW RECORDS EN ROUTE TO TITLE

NATIONAL RECORDS

Single-Season Scoring
New Record: 723
Previous Record: 716 points, Oklahoma 2008

What looked like a lock going into the game ended up being a close call. Florida State's game-winning touchdown to Kelvin Benjamin broke the record set in Sam Bradford's Heisman season with the Sooners. Both teams played 14 games, but Oklahoma lost in the national championship against Florida.

Kicker Single Season scoring
New Record: 157 points
Previous Record:156 points, Quinn Sharp, Oklahoma State 2012

ACC RECORDS

Points Per Game
New Record: 51.6
Previous Record: 48.4, FSU 1995

Florida State entered the championship game averaging 53 points per game, and the national record of 56 points per game was already out of reach. The Seminoles could have been shut out in the title game and still finished averaging 49.2 points per game, so this was a lock even before Monday. It's worth noting that FSU's 34 points dropped their season average below the 52.4 points Baylor averaged this year to lead the country.

Wins by an ACC Team
New Record: 14 wins
Previous Record: 13, multiple teams

Only five teams in the country had ever finished a season with 14 wins. Auburn was the most recent to do it in 2010. Florida State became the sixth. There will be a chance for a team to topple this record again next year with the addition of a playoff game to determine the national champion.

Total Offense
New Record: 7,267 yards
Previous Record: 6,655 yards, Clemson 2012

FSU had this one in the bag going into the game, though they fell far short of the conference record for yards per game (519.1 this year against 550.7 yards per game by FSU in 1995).

Yards Per Play
New Record: 7.67
Previous Record: 7.12, FSU 2000

FSU entered the championship game averaging 7.81 yards per play. That number took a dip, but the 'Noles still led the country in yards per play. Between this and the scoring record, it's clear this was one of the strongest offenses in college football history.

Touchdown Passes
New Record: 42
Previous Record: 40, Clemson 2012

Jameis Winston had two touchdown passes in the championship game to set this record. He had 40 touchdown passes on the season, while Sean McGuire chipped in with two more. This one is worth keeping an eye on in 2014 as Winston returns for his sophomore season.

Scoring Margin
New Record: 39.5 points per game
Previous Record: 33.8, FSU 1993

Auburn could have won the championship game by 70 and FSU still would have had this one in hand. Winning the game by three dropped the average below 40 points per game, but the Seminoles still shattered this record.

Touchdowns
New Record: 94
Previous Record: 72, Florida State 1995

This one was set several weeks ago. The conference record for touchdowns per game is 6.55, and FSU finished the year averaging 6.71. That was close to a lock as well entering the game.

Extra Points
New Record: 94
Previous Record: 69 attempted, 67 made

Freshman kicker Roberto Aguayo was perfect on a record 90 extra point attempts in 2013
File this away in Aguayo's long list of accomplishments. He broke these records thanks to eight touchdowns against Syracuse on Nov. 16, and added to them considerably in the four games since. He's also set the school record for consecutive made PATs. He had outscored FSU's 13 opponents on the season going into the game, but came up short in pursuit of that accomplishment. He scored 157 points against the opposition's 170.

First Downs
New Record: 357
Previous Record: 350, FSU 1993

Florida State tied its season low with 19 first downs against the Tigers, but still managed this one with some room for comfort. Interestingly, the Seminoles only finished seventh nationally in total first downs but still set a conference record.

Individual Kickoff Return Average
New Record: 36.41 yards per return
Previous Record: 35.3 yards, George Marinkov, NC State 1954

This wasn't on the radar entering the game, but a 100-yard touchdown return propelled Levonte Whitfield into the record books. He had only 17 returns this year, but two were for touchdowns. The freshman still has plenty of time to break his own record.

SCHOOL RECORDS
Interceptions
New Record: 26
Previous Record: 25, 1968 and 1991

This record was tied going into the game and didn't fall until the fourth quarter. P.J. Williams picked off Nick Marshall early in the final period. FSU turned the interception into a touchdown pass to fullback Chad Abram.

900-yarders
New Record: FSU had three receivers each with over 900 yards and a running back with over 1,000 yards

The buzz entering this game was whether FSU would have three receivers (Kelvin Benjamin, Rashad Greene and Kenny Shaw) with over 1,000 and a running back who matched that number. Devonta Freeman passed the 1,000-yard mark along with Benjamin and Greene, but Shaw finished with 933 yards after having just two catches for four yards in the game.

Rushing Touchdowns
New Record: 42
Previous Record: 40, 2012

Winston's 17-yard touchdown run in the third quarter against Duke tied the school record for rushing touchdowns in a season, and it took only a few more minutes before Freeman broke the record. He added one more in the second quarter against Auburn. For the season, Florida State finished with 42 rushing touchdowns and 42 passing touchdowns.

Defensive Touchdowns
New Record: 8
Previous Record: 7, 1988

This one fell during the 80-point outburst against Idaho. Telvin Smith's 79-yard interception return in the first quarter tied the record, and the new mark was set when E.J. Levenberry ran a pick 78 yards back for a score in the fourth quarter.

Field Goal Percentage
New Record: 95.4%
Previous Record: 92.3%, 2008

Aguayo has written a long chapter in the record books this season, thanks largely to FSU's prolific offense. As long as he didn't miss a field goal, he had this record in hand. He added two more for good measure and finished the season 21 for 22, while Graham Gano went 24 for 26 during his record season.

WINSTON RECORDS (National)

Freshman quarterback Jameis Winston rewrote the record books during his Heisman campaign.

ACC Pass Efficiency
New Record: 184.85
Previous Record: 175.0, Joe Hamilton 1999

Hamilton's senior campaign isn't often remembered among the country's best, but he was remarkably effective. Winston entered the game with a passer rating of 190.05 and could threaten this record again as a sophomore.

ACC Yards Per Attempt
New Record: 10.6 yards
Previous Record: 10.03, Joe Hamilton 1999

This record will be harder for Winston to break as a sophomore with the loss of Shaw and Benjamin, but it's a remarkable number nonetheless. Each time he dropped back to pass, he averaged a first down, completion or not. He averaged a gaudy 15.78 yards per completion.

ACC Passing Touchdowns
New Record: 40
Previous Record: 36, Tajh Boyd 2012

Boyd was remarkably consistent in his three years as a starter, throwing for 33, 36 and 34 touchdowns. Winston broke the record against Duke and tacked on two more touchdowns against Auburn in the championship game

National Passing Yards (Freshman)
New Record: 4,057
Previous Record: 3,745, Brett Hundley 2012

Hundley's 2012 season was much quieter than Winston's Heisman campaign this season. He followed his spectacular freshman season with 3,071 yards and 35 touchdowns (24 passing) and improved efficiency.

National Passing Touchdowns (Freshman)
New Record: 40
Previous Record: 36, Sam Bradford 2007

Along with the team scoring record in 2008, Winston and the Seminoles took a few records away from Bradford's Sooners this year. Bradford did manage to hold on to the freshman record for completion percentage (69.5 percent).

National Passing Efficiency (Freshman)
New Record: 184.85
Previous Record: 180.4, Michael Vick 1999

Vick's freshman campaign, in which he finished third in Heisman voting while going 11-1, was similarly electrifying to Winston's debut. The Hokies finished the year ranked No. 2 after losing to the Seminoles in the national championship.
