4* OL Aubrey Phillips might be leaving the team already. Summer isn't even over yet and we have yet to begin 2-a-days.

Top 10 players to watch in the fall

Monday, July 13, 2009 | Feedback | Print Entry

While working on a project for ESPN The Magazine's college football season preview issue, I've had the chance to speak with many top players from each conference. One side effect of these conversations is that you tend to get more fired up for the upcoming season. It's not just because of the matchups but also because you want to see how certain players have developed.

This week's top-10 list is players I'm most curious to see in the fall:
 1. Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State: Thanks to a host of factors -- such as the attention that Sam Bradford and Colt McCoy received, the presence of Michael Crabtree and the catch he made to beat No. 1-ranked Texas, the fact that Oklahoma State was not a top-10 team and the arrival of a batch of phenomenal freshman wideouts -- Bryant was somewhat overlooked last season. His numbers were impressive (87 catches, 19 touchdowns), but I didn't begin to grasp his talent until I started hearing from rival players and coaches this summer. The guy is big and fast but not freakishly so (although Bryant is said to have the biggest hands in college football). His ball skills and ability to operate in traffic are what separate him. One player I spoke to who has covered both Crabtree and Bryant many times says there is no comparison: Bryant is the superior receiver. If that's really the case, I can't wait to see more of him, especially when the Cowboys play a big SEC team such as Georgia in the opener.
 2. Terrelle Pryor, QB, Ohio State: The 6-foot-6 sophomore had some spectacular moments this past fall, but he was reluctant to pull the trigger and throw passes to open receivers. Rival coaches say it's because Pryor didn't trust his eyes and was too afraid to make mistakes. Most think he needs more refinement and must work on anticipating when his targets will come open. Still, a 12-to-4 touchdown-to-interception ratio and a 61 percent completion rate is impressive for a true freshman quarterback. Now in Year 2, Pryor's Ohio State offense will be without some very talented and experienced receivers who have moved on to the NFL, along with star running back Chris "Beanie" Wells. Privately, some Buckeyes have said they would've preferred if OSU had went with senior Todd Boeckman more this past fall. Regardless, it's the Pryor Show now.
 3. Bryce Brown, RB, Tennessee: The nation's most-talked-about recruit last year has arrived in Knoxville with a ton of hype. Some good, some bad. And it's all thanks to the way his recruitment unfolded. The Vols staff has dismissed any notion that Brown carries prima donna issues, saying it has been delighted by his attitude. Now, can the 217-pound back spark a listless offense?
 4. Jake Locker, QB, Washington: A dynamic talent on a dismal team that went 0-12 last season, Locker always has been fun to watch. He is as dangerous a running quarterback as there is in the country but has never been known for an accurate arm. Thanks largely to the arrival of new U-Dub coach Steve Sarkisian, Locker appears to be a much, much improved passer this spring. Just how much improved is the big question.
 5. DeAndre Brown, WR, Southern Miss: When we last saw the supersized wide receiver, he was being taken off the field at the Superdome during the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl after a gruesome leg injury. Word is Brown is back and ready to build on his record-setting debut season. The 6-6, 230-pound receiver even claims to have gotten faster.
 6. Jerrell Powe, DT, Ole Miss: As recruiters around the South will tell you, Powe once was one of the best D-line prospects they've seen. He had uncanny quickness for such a huge man. Problem is, it took Powe three years to be cleared to play in the SEC, and when he did get into the action, he was hampered by a lot of rust, a bad wrist and a lack of conditioning. The wrist is healed, so he's no longer playing one-handed. Meanwhile, a few days ago, Powe said he dropped his weight to 327 pounds (some 40 to 50 fewer than before). The Rebels, who must replace All-American DT Peria Jerry, their best player last season, have two capable inside men in Ted Laurent and Lawon Scott. But if Powe is as good as advertised, he'll break into the lineup and make a solid defense potentially lethal.
 7. Jack Crawford, DE, Penn State: Even though Penn State made its bones as Linebacker U., the program really has done an excellent job of developing standout defensive ends of late. (Courtney Brown, Michael Haynes, Tamba Hali and Aaron Maybin come immediately to mind.) Next in D-line coach Larry Johnson's pipeline is Crawford, a British-born pass-rushing force who has generated quite a buzz during the past few months in Happy Valley. The 6-5, 265-pound Crawford, one of just three true freshmen to play in every game for PSU last season, grew up boxing and playing cricket. He also has some PSU insiders believing that he has more potential than any of the ends Johnson has coached.
 8. Matt Barkley, QB, USC: The Golden Boy freshman was sharp throughout the spring as he made a serious run at the starting job, but he couldn't quite overtake Aaron Corp. (He did surpass onetime prep phenom Mitch Mustain, though.) The battle, however, is far from over for the Trojans' QB job. Barkley has continued to digest the Trojans' offense, and teammates have marveled at the kid's demeanor. Nothing fazes him, they say. We'll see. If he can unseat Corp, who didn't make many mistakes in the spring, the Trojans might have a true freshman leading the offense when they make their first road trip of the season to Ohio State in Week 2.
 9. Phil Taylor, DT, Baylor: The 350-pound Penn State transfer had been considered one of the top D-line talents to come through Happy Valley in years, but he got booted because of off-the-field issues. Now at Baylor, Taylor figures to give the Bears a much-needed presence in the middle of their D. How much talent does he have? Coach Art Briles says he'll be surprised if Taylor isn't named to the All-Big 12 first team this year. Wow. If Taylor does that, he'll have had a better year than Ndamukong Suh and Gerald McCoy. That'll be something.
 10. Josh Jarboe, WR, Troy: A big, physical receiver whose career at Oklahoma was derailed after some off-the-field problems, Jarboe isn't the kind of wideout the Trojans usually have. They usually have smaller, quick guys, not 6-3 speed guys like Jarboe. Teammates say they like what they've seen from him. Quarterback Levi Brown says Jarboe just needs to become more consistent and get better at making the routine plays.
Just missed the cut: Tate Forcier/Denard Robinson, QBs, Michigan; Noel Devine, RB, WVU; Stephen Garcia, QB, South Carolina; Ryan Mallett, QB, Arkansas; Matt Patchan, OT, Florida; Jahvid Best, RB, Cal; Vaughn Telemaque, S, Miami; Colin Kaepernick, QB, Nevada; Sean Lee, LB, Penn State; Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford; Manti Te'o, LB, Notre Dame.

Why would he? He broke his leg during a game

I think you might be mistaken with the other player that ran into a cart in the endzone and broke his leg. His name/team is slipping my mind though.

Unless i'm missing out on something. I'm curious now if there was a reason to file a lawsuit

You are correct. Sorry about that

Gunna you heard anything about an altercation in Lexington between UK and UT football players last weekend?

Talk about it in Football Recruiting Board
NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. --- This year's Nike Peach Jam not only features the top high school basketball talent in America. It alsofeatures the nation's No. 1 football prospect, Seantrel Henderson ofSaint Paul (Minn.). A hulking 6-8, 335-pounder, Henderson is running with the Howard Pulley Panthers squad---teammates with top North Carolina hoops prospectHarrison Barnes.

Five-star offensive lineman Seantrel Henderson is considering making a visit to North Carolina before narrowing down his list.

Although Henderson is not exactly a Rivals 150-caliber basketball prospect, he was doing some good things to help the Panthers, who were blown out in theirfirst game on Sunday and then lost a close game Sunday night.

"The first game, we really didn't come out and play too well. Tonight (Sunday night) I thought we played well, but we had a couple of mistakes at theend," said Henderson. "We did some good things but we just didn't do enough to pick up the 'W.' I mean, I can't blame it on thecoaches or nothing like that---they don't play."

Despite the two losses, Henderson is enjoying the AAU basketball experience and the opportunity to play in front of a 'Who's Who' of high-majorcoaches.

"It's a pretty good experience for me, you know, coming out here with the college coaches and all these good teams and playing with the best. It'sjust fun to me," he said.

Although the Pulley Panthers still have the AAU nationals later in the summer, Henderson isn't sure he'll make that event because of some upcomingfootball visits.

"We've got another (AAU) tournament, but I think I might be on a couple of visits, so I might not be able to make it, but that's pretty muchit," he said.

Specifically, Henderson said he's planning to make a couple of trips in the coming weeks with his mother to some schools on each coast. Thus far, Hendersonhas visited primarily Big Ten programs that are fairly local to his home in Minnesota.

"My mom is going to take me to Florida and California to visit Florida, Florida State, and USC," he said. "I've been to Iowa. I've beento Wisconsin. I've been to Michigan, Michigan State, and I believe that's it. That's it."

There's a chance that Henderson could drop in on Gainesville for their prestigious 'Friday Night Lights' camp, although it hasn't beenofficially set up.

"I have heard of it (Friday Night Lights). It could be a possibility," he said.

When asked about why he plans to visit Florida, Florida State, and Southern Cal, he mentioned the prestige of each of those programs.

"I just know they've got a nice track record of sending guys to the 'League' (NFL), and a lot of good guys come out of those schools," hesaid. "I just think that maybe I could be another one of those guys. I know they breed a lot of guys, so I just think that those would be nice schoolsthat I might fit in, as long as I go check it out and that I'm comfortable there."

Henderson is planning the Gainesville trip despite saying that he hasn't been in contact with Gators head coach Urban Meyer in a while.

"Urban Meyer, I haven't really talked to him in a long time, since I was like a sophomore. I haven't heard from them since then," he said."I'm going to have to get in touch with them. It's been a while since I talked to any of them."

Along with his planned trips to Florida and California, Henderson mentioned that there's a few other schools in the Southeast that he'd potentiallylike to visit, including North Carolina.

"I was supposed to come out here to visit Georgia, but I don't know when I could get down here to visit a little bit. I'd like to get down toGeorgia and see what that's like, and I was seeing about going to Clemson," he said. "I was supposed to go down there (to UNC) too, so it mightbe, I'll probably end up going to North Carolina and South Carolina unofficially for sure, just to check it out and see how things are going."

Henderson recently fielded phone calls from the coaching staffs of both basketball and football at North Carolina, and UNC head basketball coach Roy Williams informed him that similarly to former football player Jesse Holley andcurrent football player Greg Little, Henderson would definitely have the opportunity towalk onto the basketball team at North Carolina if he signs with UNC and so desires.

"I talked to Roy Williams about two or three weeks before I came down here (to the Peach Jam). He said he was going to be down here watching my team overhere," he said. "I talked to them (the UNC football coaches) about a month ago."

North Carolina is one of several schools that Henderson says would allow him the chance to play both basketball and football, and it's an idea he'sseriously entertaining.

"Yeah, I would like to do that (play basketball and football). It's a big possibility that I could be doing that, as long as I could handle both ofthem and manage my time with both sports," he said. "Yes sir (schools have said I could play both), UCLA, Michigan, Wisconsin, North Carolina,Georgia, and I think Ohio State and Oklahoma."

At this point in his recruitment Henderson says he knows for certain of three official visits he's planning to take, and the other two are up in the air.

"I know for sure I'm going to USC, Florida, and Ohio State (for officials). The other two I'm going to have to figure that out," he said.

With so many awesome options for his collegiate future, what are some of the big factors for Henderson as he attempts to narrow his list and make hishighly-anticipated choice?

"Just a place where I know if I come that I can live there for three or four years, however long I'm there, and there's people I'm comfortablearound," he said. "Just a comfortable place that I can be at---you know what I'm saying?"

A mammoth young man with incredible film on the football field, it's a natural thing to compare Henderson to another Midwestern offensive linestar---former Ohio State standout and new Chicago Bear Orlando Pace.

"Yeah, I get a lot of that (comparisons to Pace). Yeah, it is (good to be compared to him). He's a big dude," said Henderson, who mentioned thathe currently weighs 335 pounds, bench-presses 335 pounds, and recently ran a 4.88 40-yard dash.

As a result of his impressive combination of size and mobility, some schools have informed Henderson that they could see him occasionally moving around andhelping the team in more areas than simply offensive tackle.

"A couple of coaches mentioned that to me (possibly doubling as a tight end). Wisconsin, they mentioned that to me. Michigan and Michigan State mentionedthat to me," he said.

Right now, Henderson doesn't claim any leaders, although he'd like to narrow things down a bit before going into his senior year in a few weeks.

"It's kind of wide open, but I'm going to start narrowing it down right before school starts," he said.

His current plan is to make his big announcement on National Signing Day.

"Probably National Signing Day," he said about a decision.

So by now most of you know that there is a serious football story going down. The last 24 hours have seen what has become the norm for most stories in the internet age. The internet sites and the message boards are abuzz…the mainstream media is (understandably) silent. There are a lot of stories running around and some are false, some have grains of truth and some may be dead on. While there is still a lot we dont know, here is what I think can be said with some certainty:

- There was an altercation on Saturday night at Royal Lexington involving UK football players.

- Also part of the altercation were a number of Tennessee football players invited into town by another (secondary sport) female athlete at UK

- The UK and UT football players began talking trash to each other and things got heated.

- Something else happened and the police were called.

The "something else happened" is of course the devil in the details. While there have been no charges and nothing is certain, it does seem like a weapon was involved and it is likely that the one being investigated came from the UK player end. There are reports that UT players also had weapons, but I havent heard any confirmation of that as of yet.

Now the next question of course is which players? Lots of names have been thrown about, however most speculation is centering around Micah Johnson, who was at the party at the time. Micah commented on his Facebook yesterday that the "truth will come out", which one assumes was referencing this event. There are other players who were there and while none of those names are confirmed, unfortunately from a fan's standpoint, virtually all are prominent members of the team.

We will see how all this plays out. It is important to remember that no charges have been filed and no arrests made at this time. Most of the stories we have read attributing a particular action to a particular person are, at this time, still just rumor. But it is clear that an incident occurred…it is becoming clear that UK and UT players were involved…and I expect a media circus to develop soon. For now, cross your fingers and hope that we end up with the best possible option….which is a silly fight where nothing serious or criminal occurred.
