Initial reactions to the case seemed to be he was cooked bc of how long the investigation had been ongoing

After it playing out would it be fair to say they were investigating so long because they didn't have much?

I recall the rented Infiniti being one of the only major parts of the indictment and even that's not clear cut

Or did the state just **** up that much?

Investigations usually last way longer than the average person thinks, especially if you're building a complex RICO case with dozens of potential suspects and loads of witnesses.
Jury selection also took an insanely long time due to it being nearly impossible to find someone who didn't know anything about Thugger.
RICO cases have an easy conviction rate due to how the RICO law works. Even if you didn't really do anything of substance yourself, you're still going down if prosecutors prove you were sufficiently associated to qualify as a "member" of "the Criminal Enterprise". Then all prosecutors need is to show you took at least one "overt action is furtherance of the conspiracy", which is an easy requirement.

Either way Thug pleaded guilty, which suggests he and his team weren't confident in beating the case. He got a pretty good deal actually considering what he was charged with.
