Target Fires Manager After Black Customer Says She Was Racially Profiled

Target fired a manager at a Michigan store on Monday, two weeks after a black customer was falsely accused of stealing a bikini and then forced to remove her clothing to prove her innocence, according to her attorney.

The development was the latest in a string of discriminatory practices that have dogged the retailer.

Ashanae Davis, 20, was exiting the Southfield, Michigan, store on May 22 when a Target security guard confronted her and claimed that she was wearing a stolen bikini bottom underneath her clothes, Davis' attorney, Jasmine Rand, said Monday.

A second guard then handcuffed her and dragged her through the store, yelling that she had stolen the bikini, Rand said.

The officers took her to a room. Once inside, a female manager was called in, and Davis was instructed to lift up her shirt and pull down her pants in front of the manager and the two male officers.

Davis said she felt "humiliated and forced" by the Target employees.

"Initially, I was in shock. I couldn't believe what was going on," Davis, who lives nearby in the Detroit area, told NBC News. "I was scared — afraid of what was going to happen next."

Davis and Rand held a press conference on Monday morning in Detroit in which they detailed the incident, adding that Target had not responded to their calls.

Hours later, Target announced that it had fired the manager.

"We want everyone who shops at Target to feel welcomed and respected and take any allegations of mistreatment seriously," Target said in a statement. "We’re sorry for the actions of our former team member, who created an experience we don’t want any guest to have at Target. Upon reviewing our team’s actions, we terminated the team member who was directly involved."

The statement added that the retailer would be addressing the matter with the security company that provides guards for the store.

The manager is white, as is one of the security guards. The other guard, who is black, hinted after Davis was allowed to leave that what had happened to her was not unusual, Davis' attorney said.

"The African-American employee apologized to her and said, 'This happens all the time,' and he was afraid he would lose his job" if he didn't participate, Rand said. "The other two did not apologize at all."

The incident comes several months after a black man said he was . In that encounter, James Edward Wright III said he was told that he couldn't touch headphones before buying them because an employee was afraid that he would steal them.

Target has also faced questions of discrimination in its hiring practices: In April, the retailer agreed to a $3.7 million settlement in a lawsuit alleging that the company's against black and Latino applicants.

Rand, a civil rights attorney who has also represented the families of Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown, black teens killed in high-profile shootings, did not immediately respond to a request for comment following Target's announcement of the manager's firing.

Earlier, she had said she and co-attorney Maurice Davis were gathering evidence and considering whether to pursue criminal charges.

She said they were looking to sue for discrimination based on race and gender and false arrest, she said.

"Obviously we want them held accountable for the violation of our client's rights. Really, to me, the person who is most culpable is the manager for letting this happen. She should have been trained to de-escalate the situation," Rand said.

It was unclear whether the potential lawsuit would proceed following the manager's termination.

Davis said the encounter has continued to leave her fearful, weeks later.

"Sometimes I have anxiety attacks," she said. "It's just very hard for me to enter in stores now."

White Manager Pleads Guilty to Forcing Black Cook to Work for Years Without Pay

A white South Carolina man who managed a buffet restaurant near Myrtle Beach admitted in federal court this week that he had beaten and verbally abused an intellectually disabled black cook, forcing him to work over 100 hours a week without pay for about five years, according to the Justice Department.

In pleading guilty to one count of forced labor on Monday, the defendant, Bobby Paul Edwards, 53, said that he had used violence, threats, isolation and intimidation against the victim, John Christopher Smith — or “JCS,” as he is identified in court documents.

Mr. Edwards, who could face up to 20 years in prison when he is sentenced, admitted that while he was in charge, from 2009 to 2014, he beat Mr. Smith with a belt, punched him, hit him with pots and pans and burned Mr. Smith’s bare neck with hot tongs, according to a Justice Department statement released on Tuesday. He also used abusive language and racial epithets against Mr. Smith.

Mr. Smith, who is around 40 years old, had worked at J&J Cafeteria in Conway, S.C., since he was 12, the Justice Department said, and feared losing his job.

Mr. Smith told WMBF-TV, an NBC affiliate in Myrtle Beach, that Mr. Edwards would beat him with belts “and all that.” He’d “take the tongs to the grease on my neck,” he said.

“I want him to go to prison,” Mr. Smith said at the time. “And I want to be there when he go.”

Mr. Edwards was indicted by a federal grand jury in South Carolina in October 2016 and was arrested. He pleaded not guilty at the time.

Attempts to reach Mr. Edwards’s lawyer on Wednesday were unsuccessful.

In the Justice Department’s statement, John Gore, acting assistant attorney general, said: “Human trafficking through forced labor can happen on farms, in homes, and as today’s case shows — in public places, such as restaurants. Edwards abused an African-American man with intellectual disabilities by coercing him to work long hours in a restaurant without pay.”

Sherri Lydon, the United States attorney for the District of South Carolina, added, “This defendant abused a vulnerable victim, and today’s guilty plea holds the defendant responsible for his criminal acts.”

Racial Slur Sparks Booze-Fueled Brawl Among Bronx Firefighters at Medal Ceremony

A group of off-duty uniformed firefighters got into a drunken bare-knuckled brawl at a Bronx bar on Wednesday — just hours after they were honored for their heroics by the mayor and fire commissioner, the Daily News has learned.

A group of off-duty uniformed firefighters got into a drunken bare-knuckled brawl at a Bronx bar on Wednesday — just hours after they were honored for their heroics by the mayor and fire commissioner, the Daily News has learned.

A racial slur thrown at a black firefighter sparked the fight inside Billy’s Bar near Yankee Stadium between Bronx’s Rescue Company 3 and members of Ladder Company 49 and Engine Company 68, which share a stationhouse in Highbridge.

“They were drinking since 11 a.m.,” said a source with knowledge of the incident. “They show up at the bar after the medal ceremony and they got out of hand. The ladder and engine guys were fighting with the Rescue 3 guys.”

Fists began flying after Rescue 3 member called a firefighter from the other house a “n----r,” according to sources.

The brawl got so out of control that bouncers sprayed at least one firefighter with pepper spray as they broke up the fisticuffs, sources said.

Cops were also called.

A video taken of the aftermath showed a group inebriated, unsteady firefighters — their shirt tails untucked and sleeves rolled up — arguing with each other.

One firefighter is seen pushing a police officer trying to break the fight up. Other firefighters held the soused smoke-eaters back as they talked to the cops.

“Hey I think I’d be going to jail!” one witness screamed at the scene. “Where the cops at! Where the cops at!”

“They just had a big fight right here!” the witness, who was off camera. “You guys got great jobs. I have nothing to lose.”

No arrests were made. Nor were any police reports filed.

A 911 call brought cops to Billy’s Bar Wednesday evening, but the incident was categorized as “other,” officials said.

Onlookers were surprised no one ended up in handcuffs.

“The police did nothing but send them home,” wrote Instagram user Will_tooill, who posted the video. “The firefighter van almost ran them over a couple minutes after this.”

“I wouldnt be surprised if the driver had something to drink,” he said.

But the intervention only brought a brief hiatus to the fight, sources said.

A short time later, three drunken white members of Ladder 49/Engine 68 went to Rescue 3 on Washington Ave. in Claremont to continue the fight — but were beaten up and sent home.

“They went to Rescue 3 to settle the score and wound up on the losing end because they were drunk fighting against the sober on duty firefighters,” the source said.

No one was seriously injured in either fight.

Workers at Billy’s Bar, which caters to cops and firemen, would not comment on Wednesday’s brawl.

FDNY brass have been made aware of the fisticuffs, a department spokesman said.

“The Fire Department initiated an investigation following reports of a fight involving off-duty uniformed firefighters Wednesday night in the Bronx, and has since obtained disturbing video that we have shared with the city’s Department of Investigation,” FDNY spokesman Francis Gribbon said.

FDNY Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro vowed to get to the bottom of what happened.

“Everyone and anyone who engaged it this outrageous behavior will be held accountable,” he said.

The FDNY are in the beginning stages of the investigation and are in the process of identifying those involved, a spokesman said.

So far, no one has been disciplined.

Rescue 3 was at Billy’s Bar celebrating one of their own — Firefighter Matthew Murphy was awarded with the both the Vincent J. Kane Medal and the Brummer Medal for heroic acts at two separate Bronx fires.

In September, he pulled three people out of a burning building in Parkchester, officials said. Two months later, he helped free a trapped woman from a second floor apartment in a Bronx home.

It was unclear if Murphy was at the bar or involved in the scuffle.

Sources said the hook and ladder firefighters were primed for a fight — upset that Rescue company members get all the glory on Medal Day.

“The rescue companies have a history of getting more medals when they do the same job as regular firehouses,” the source said. “It’s a thorn in the side of regular firefighters.”

Another source said that whatever personal or professional resentment they had toward each other bubbled to the surface as more beer flowed Wednesday.

“Alcohol and firemen don’t mix,” he said.

Tabbie Duncan: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

tabbie-duncan.jpeg

https://heavy.com/news/2018/06/tabbie-duncan/

A Missouri woman has lost her job and is facing outrage on social media after a racist Snapchat video of her using the n-word was shared on Facebook. Tabitha “Tabbie” Duncan was fired from her job at a St. Louis restaurant just hours after the video began to go viral, the Riverfront Times reports.

In the video, Duncan can be heard using the racial slur while others talk about going “n*gger hunting.” The shocking video was shared on Facebook on June 10 by someone who saw it on Snapchat and it has since been shared by many social media users, including social justice activists. Duncan, a 20-year-old Jefferson County, Missouri, resident was fired by the Social Bar and Grill, described by the Riverfront Times as a “breastaurant,” on Monday, June 11, the bar said on Facebook.

Duncan, has deleted most of her social media profiles, including a June 10 tweet saying she had “dropped to her knees in prayer,” and could not be immediately reached for comment by Heavy. Two other people seen in the video have been identified as Joshua Davenport and Brianna Haas.

Here’s what you need to know about Tabbie Duncan and the video:

The brief Snapchat video was posted to Facebook on Sunday by Kalle Bates, who saw it on Snapchat. You can watch the video, which is uncensored and includes multiple uses of the n-word, above. Bates wrote in her post, “So many things wrong with this Snapchat… drinking and driving and what’s being said. Why does this still get said, joke or not?”

The video shows Tabbie Duncan in the passenger seat of a truck with a Michelob Ultra in her hand and her feet up on the dashboard. A man who is off camera can heard saying, “so are we going n*gger hunting today or what?” Another man replies, “yeah we’re going n*gger hunting.” The first man replies, “we’re going n*gger hunting right now, huh?” Duncan can then be heard replying, “You get them n*ggers” while smile smirking into the camera.

The man then says to her, “look at my soon-to-be sister-in-law, she looks so pretty.” Duncan then smiles as the video ends.

The video was posted to Snapchat by Brianna Nicole Haas. And one of the men in the video has been identified as Joshua Davenport. The other man has not been identified.

2. The Social Bar & Grill Says They ‘Immediately Terminated’ Duncan After Learning About the Video & Says Her ‘Incendiary Comments’ Don’t Represent Their Owners’ ‘Views, Opinions & Policies’

tabbie-duncan-social-bar-and-grill.jpg

The Social Bar and Grill was flooded with comments Sunday night and Monday morning about Tabbie Duncan, who was featured in several photos on their Facebook page in her Social waitressing uniform. Those photos have since been removed and the bar posted a message Monday afternoon saying Duncan had been fired from her job there.

“Social Bar & Grill and it’s owners have recently become aware of a vile, disgusting, and offensive video made by one of its employees,” the Facebook post said. “Upon learning of this, Social Bar & Grill immediately terminated this employee as soon as they could reach her! The incendiary comments made by this employee absolutely does NOT represent the views, opinions, and policies of Social Bar & Grill and it’s owners. Nor will they be tolerated in any fashion. Social Bar & Grill and it’s owners continue to encourage and seek diversity in its restaurant.”

Not everyone is happy with how the Social Bar and Grill handled the situation, posts on the restaurant’s Facebook page show. A screengrab of a Facebook Messenger conversation between a concerned Facebook user and a representative of the restaurant’s Facebook page shows that the restaurant initially responded by saying, “Please stop posting this to our establishments page.” The user responded, “It’ll be posted everywhere. That’s nasty you allow people like that to work for you.” The restaurant’s rep responded, “It has nothing to do (with) my business and you will receive a cease and desist letter from (our) lawyer (if) you continue.”

In response to that screengrab, the restaurant’s owners wrote on Facebook, “The initial response made regarding the video being posted to the social media page was made by a person who helps with the social media aspect of our marketing and didn’t know the person or if they were even an actual employee. Once the owners became aware and confirmed it was an actual employee, immediate action was taken and the employee was terminated.”

3. Duncan Recently Enlisted in the U.S. Air Force & She Has Worked at a St. Louis-Area Hospital

Tabitha “Tabbie” Duncan recently enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, according to a social media post from a family member. The family member wrote in the post, May 31 post, which shows Duncan standing between an American flag and the Air Force flag with her hand raised as if she was being sworn in, “So Tabbie Duncan did a thing today. Welcome to the United States Air Force!! So proud of you.” The Air Force has not commented about the video.

When asked on Facebook about the video, a representative from the U.S. Air Force Recruiting page replied, “We have been made aware of a video online of an alleged reserve Airman who made racially insensitive comments. We are looking into the matter and we appreciate this being brought to our attention. The U.S. Air Force values diversity and inclusion; our Airmen come together to produce an incredible team that can accomplish any mission and overcome any challenge. We believe that our greatest asset is our diverse, innovative and technically-savvy workforce. Our Airmen come from all backgrounds and remarks such as these do not fall in line with our culture. We take incidents like this very seriously and action will be taken upon further investigation as necessary.”

Other social media posts show that Duncan works or has worked at Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital in Creve Coeur, Missouri. A photo on her Instagram page shows her with another hospital employee with a hospital name-badge clipped to her shirt. It is not clear what job she had or has at the hospital. The hospital has also not commented about the video or Duncan’s employment status.

4. She Is Also an Aspiring Model & Has Posted Several Modeling Photos on Her Instagram Page

Duncan deleted her Facebook page after the video began to go viral. According to the Riverfront Times, the page included pro-Trump memes and a meme bashing NFL players for kneeling during the National Anthem.

Before deleting her page, Duncan shared a quotation that said, “Everyone makes, mistakes in life, but that doesn’t mean they have to pay for them the rest of their life/sometimes good people make bad choices/It doesn’t mean they are bad.”

In April, she wrote on Twitter, “There comes a time where you need to realize every decision you make, needs to be for you. Despite selfishness and criticism acts you’ll be thrown, just know what you do now is what you’ll have later. Everything will fall in place, I promise.” And in another tweet, she wrote, “God will have you through it before anyone else will.”

"I'm far from a racist, my bestfriend of 20 years is a mulatto and i love her dad! "

How do you claim to not be racist yet somehow use slavery era terminology in the same sentence???

Racist Missouri Waitress Fired After 'N——r Hunting' Video

tabbieduncan_screen.jpg

A Jefferson County woman filmed in one of the most racist, redneck Missourah scenes imaginable was fired from her south county waitressing gig today after the video went viral.

In the clip, twenty-year-old Tabitha "Tabbie" Duncan, Michelob Ultra in hand, rides atop a truck as it rambles down a dirt road in the dark. It's pretty standard small-town idiocy, until a mostly off-camera narrator starts in with some jarring racism.

Narrator: "So we going n****r hunting today or what?"

Another person: "We're going n****r hunting."

Narrator: "We're ******* n****r hunting right now, uh?

And then Duncan chimes in: "You get them n****s."

Duncan's personal Facebook page previously included some pro-Trump memes and a meme bashing NFL players for kneeling during the national anthem. Yesterday, she shared a quotation about everyone making mistakes. The quotation, which apparently originated on a different page, reads, "Everyone makes, mistakes in life, but that doesn't mean they have to pay for them the rest of their life/sometimes good people make bad choices/It doesn't mean they are bad."

"Everyone makes, mistakes in life, but that doesn't mean they have to pay for them the rest of their life/sometimes good people make bad choices/It doesn't mean they are bad."

Hope this follows her for the rest of her miserable life.

Hate how these people never claim their racism.

Arrest After Homeless Man's Belongings Thrown in Lake

A man who was caught on camera throwing a homeless man's belongings into a lake last week has been arrested.

The man, originally known only as "Jogger Joe," was spotted near Merritt Lake in Oakland, California on Friday, June 8. Several bystanders stopped to talk to him and protest as he angrily threw out a homeless man's things. A witness named JJ Harris stopped to take video of the incident.

Harris' video shows the shirtless jogger bending over to gather armfuls of a homeless man's belongings while a woman tells him to stop. "Jogger Joe" drags the belongings to a trash can and some of them are seen floating in the nearby lake.

"What are you doing with this stuff, man?" Harris is heard asking in the video."He threw it in the lake," the woman tells Harris. She and "Jogger Joe" get into a heated exchange. "I'm not taking any of it, he [the homeless man] can pick it up," "Jogger Joe" says. Harris films various objects floating in the water.

As the video continues, the argument gets more heated and other bystanders join in. One bystander begins cursing at the jogger.

Harris posted the video on Twitter on Saturday and it has gone viral. "Yesterday in Oakland jogger found throwing a peaceful homeless man's possessions in the Lake. What has this town come to?!" Harris wrote. He used the hashtag #JoggerJoe and the nickname caught on.

"Jogger Joe" was eventually identified as Henry William Sintay, Bay Area newspaper The next day, Sintay returned to the lake and was spotted wading in the water, pulling things out of it. A man named Matt Nelson took video of his exchange with Sintay that day.

Nelson asked Sintay what he was doing and Sintay responded "trying to do the right (expletive) thing" by cleaning up the lake. He denied throwing the homeless man's things in the lake the previous day. Nelson and others begin to ask Sintay questions. Sintay then steps towards Nelson and tries to snatch his cellphone.

"Are you out of your mind?" Nelson said as the men wrestled and exchanged profanities. Someone is heard yelling, but the fight is not seen on camera. Instead, shaky images are seen in the video, and then Nelson and others appear to eventually run away from Sintay -- all while live streaming on Facebook.

After both videos became widely viewed online -- outraging people in Oakland and around the U.S. -- Sintay was arrested. The 30-year-old was jailed on on robbery charges and was being held on $100,000 bail at the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin.

The homeless man whose belongings were thrown around by Sintay has been identified as Greg Markson. Most know Markson as "Jarew," The Mercury News reports. People in the area who saw the video began bringing Markson food and clothing.

A woman named Cari Geldreich says she offered to bring Markson's blankets to a laundromat for him, the paper reports. She describes Markson as very humble.

"Sometimes I take him a bag of apples," Geldreich told the newspaper -- a kind gesture that stood in stark contrast to what Markson experienced just days earlier from "Jogger Joe."
