Wrestling Thread June 13-19/ Money In The Bank Sunday/Survey On Page 1

Dave Meltzer summary of what I thought was the worst segment on Raw in this week's WON : SquaredCircle
"They did a video of Charlotte turning on Ric Flair. A bunch of talent commented on it, so they are playing that up big. Ambrose said that she tried to humiliate her father in front of everyone. Summer Rae sided with her. Lynch backed Ric Flair even though Ric Flair screwed her out of the title. Natalya said this entire time she’s wanted Charlotte to do this and prove she doesn’t need her dad to win. They were very much teasing the idea that Ric would be coming back in some form. JBL again talked about how what Charlotte did was a disgrace. They then showed a clip that ruined everything; it was Charlotte and Stephanie backstage. Stephanie confronted her. Charlotte said that she made an impact and Stephanie said that she was embarrassed to have Charlotte as their women’s champion, embarrassed that she is representing women in the WWE. She called her a spoiled, selfish, self-important brat. Charlotte said that she had no idea what she was talking about. Stephanie told her to step back and shut her mouth. Stephanie told Charlotte that she wasn’t a champion, she was a waste of talent. She told Charlotte off completely. Unless this is to build for Stephanie vs. Charlotte, and I don’t think it is, this was so unbelievably counterproductive to be mind-boggling. Plus, it made no sense. Stephanie had just slapped Ric Flair in the face and said she had no respect for him, and now she’s on Charlotte’s case for her treatment of Ric."

That Charlotte burial was sooooo bad and confusing

I couldn't believe it when I was watching

A level babyfaces: Brock Lesnar (limited dates), Dean Ambrose, John Cena, Randy Orton (who can turn heel), Roman Reigns
"Nakamura should be an A level babyface. Really, he’s the most charismatic wrestler on the roster right now, and while he doesn’t have the name value of Cena, he can and should, surpass the popularity of everyone, including Reigns, if used the way he should be."
A level heels: Kevin Owens, A.J. Styles, Seth Rollins
"Samoa Joe can, and should be, an A level heel, which helps balance things out. Plus, he’s one of the few people who are heels that can have, with the right protection, and build, a viable program with Lesnar."
A- level babyfaces: Big Show, Kane, Sami Zayn
"Finn Balor is an interesting one. He can be a face or heel. My gut slots him at the A- level on either side, similar to a Sami Zayn. He should be on the main roster, and he’s more of a natural babyface at first glance, and did great in the role in NXT. But his Japan role showed he has strong potential as a heel. Still, it may be tough to sell Vince McMahon on an 185 pound high flyer and strong technical wrestler being an A level heel."

"The former La Sombra, Andrade Cien Almas, who isn’t likely to be called up shortly, is a natural babyface, and can be the Latin star they’ve been searching for, who isn't small. The reality is that Del Rio, at his age, has been slotted, and while he should be a face right now, because he’s played out as a heel, he’s not the future superstar they wanted him to be. Almas, who was actually a great, cool heel in CMLL, can be that babyface, depending on his interviews and his ability to adapt and fit in with the style."
A- level heels: Bray Wyatt (who can turn face), Chris Jericho, Rusev

B level babyfaces: Cesaro, Dolph Ziggler, Kalisto, Neville

B level heels: The Miz, Alberto Del Rio (who really should be a babyface right now), Baron Corbin, Braun Strowman, Luke Harper (injured), Sheamus
"Austin Aries can be used as a face or a heel, and should be a solid person on the B list. I could see Vince McMahon seeing him as a C level guy, but no way."
C level babyfaces: Apollo Crews, Darren Young, Jack Swagger, Sin Cara, Mark Henry (expected to retire soon and likely not applicable to this), Titus O’Neil, Zack Ryder

C level heels: Bo Dallas, Curtis Axel, Heath Slater

A level babyface tag teams: Enzo & Cass, New Day, Usos
"On the tag team scene, Jason Jordan & Chad Gable should be an A level team. I’d go so far as to have The New Day as the top face team on one brand, and Jordan & Gable on the other, and introduce Jordan & Gable quickly for the slot."
A level heel tag teams: Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson

B level babyface tag teams: Goldust & R-Truth

B level heel tag teams: Vaudevillains, Dudleys, Shining Stars, Fandango & Tyler Breeze, The Ascension
"Of the current B level heel teams, the Dudleys could be an A level team, but they’ve been badly abused already and the Vaudevillains may be put there, but aren’t going to have legs to stay there. That does seem to be an opening for Scott Dawson & Dash Wilder, who are a strong technical team, but they are weak on interviews."
A level babyface women: Becky Lynch, Sasha Banks, Natalya, Paige
"On the women’s side, the obvious names are Bayley and Asuka, who should be in the A category on the main roster."
A level heel women: Charlotte, Dana Brooke
"If Charlotte & Dana Brooke are kept together, unless all the women are put in the same brand, it means Paige, Natalya, Banks or Lynch has to turn to be top heel on the other brand. Paige has turned too often. Banks is a natural face and should be groomed right now as the face chasing Charlotte. Asuka can be a heel, but if she and Bayley are both brought up, that leaves NXT dead when it comes to being able to showcase the women as they’ve done the past two years."

"Nia Jax isn’t ready, but looks different enough from everyone else, and she’s Dwayne Johnson’s cousin, so both help. Eventually, she’ll be there and pushed hard because they need A list women heels right now, not faces."
B level babyface women: Alicia Fox (can be a heel as well)

B level heel women: Emma (injured), Eva Marie, Lana (if she wrestles), Naomi, Tamina, Rosa Mendes (out on maternity leave and of little consequence if she returns), Summer Rae

Good read

@brendasdeadbaby
In nearly five months, the time between NXT’s Takeover: London and Takeover: Dallas, WWE effectively killed all of the organic buzz it built over two years with episodes taped months in advance which didn’t have anything to build towards. Now, with NXT Takeover: The End looming next week, WWE is reaping what it sowed.

With the brand split imminent, no one is sure what the composition of the NXT roster will look like in two months. In the current form, however, NXT has gone from a barnburning phenom of longform storytelling, in-ring supremacy and actual character development to a stale, monied supercard brand with a whole lot of nothing in between Takeovers.
NXT Takeover Makes NXT WWE's Indie Supershow http://www.voicesofwrestling.com/2016/06/01/nxt-takeover-the-end-column/

NXT has been stale for a while now. Honner is just signing any popular indie guys who can bolster the roster.

It's getting out of hand. For YEARS WWE has had a heel non-wrestling persona at the top. Wether it be Vince, Bischoff, Regal, HHH, Shane or Stephanie. But the trend with all of those mentioned is that they get their comeuppance.

Austin battered Vince on multiple occasions. Bischoff was humiliated and fired. Regal was an active wrestler and Jericho pissed in his tea that one time and still beat him. HHH, despite being ******* HHH, still got his *** kicked multiple times. Shane, I mean name a high platform he hasn't been thrown off of.

But Stephanie. ******* Stephanie. Slapping everything that's over and pissing on whatever momentum or credibility they had. Just look at these names:
NONE of these guys got their revenge on Stephanie. If She was fired, she'd get rehired and it's back to normal. If her guy (wether its HHH or Seth) lose, The Authority is still in charge and it's never Stephanie getting her comeuppance.

Nothing changes and nobody, aside from Stephanie, comes out of this looking good. I cannot fathom a reason this is written in the script.

But the MOST baffling thing was last week. Ric Flair, a heel, is slapped by Stephanie McMahon, a face and is then sent packing by Charlotte, a heel. THEN, Stephanie belittles Charlotte in a backstage segment essentially calls her a waste of talent (I believe that was the exact wording). A non-wrestling face just belittled the top female heel. Think about that for a second and ponder what the purpose, if there is one, was.

Finally, I leave you with this. This is Stephanie McMahon belittling AJ Lee, then Diva's champion, with some of the most hypocritical insults you will ever hear. Enjoy

EDIT: Welp, cheers for the immediate downvotes, people. Sorry I tried to hog all the karma with this text post. Solid discussion.
THEY  SAID  IT…
• “I’ve said this many a time, and I’m not afraid to say it now…Khali, Dalip Singh, as just a dude to shoot the **** with, he’s actually very funny, and for the most part he’s not a bad dude to hang out with. But he is without question the worst person I have ever been in the ring with, period.” – MVP
 • “There is no one, including…including Vince that has had the education that I’ve had in this business.” – Shane McMahon
 • “You’re an egomaniac, sociopath, narcissist prack. Try not to be that person in the future. But right now you’re perfect for what wrestling needs.” – Teddy Hart, on career advice his dad once gave him
THE USUAL SUSPECTS
Eastern Lariat (5/21/16):  Str**** and Dylan (who I assume is the permanent co-host now) briefly discuss Andre the Giant in Japan, the Dragon Gate Dead or Alive PPV, some thoughts on Big Japan and Stardom, random Japan indies, the sad Akira Hokuto news, and favorite shows since 2015. A solid and comprehensive show, even if the Best of the Super Juniors tournament curiously isn’t touched on. THUMBS UP

VIP Lounge (5/22/16):  The Lounge has a rare guest with Shane Helms joining MVP and Alex. The first 20 minutes is about comic books and comic book movies, so beware if that’s not your thing. Things shift into wrestling talk for a bit, mostly about working in the ring and how you approach different sized audiences. They close it out with some thoughts on parenthood and road stories, including almost getting killed in Spain. A bit lengthy, but a worthwhile listen as long as you don’t mind some non-wrestling topics. THUMBS UP

Steve Austin Show #327 (5/24/16):  The recently released WWE Diva and Tough Enough alumni Cameron joins Steve. They talk about her time in the company, her experiences on Tough Enough, going back to NXT to try and improve, her response to internet fans, getting released (she gets rather emotional at this point), and life after wrestling. The wrestling portions are solid enough, but when she and Steve talk about acting I quickly lost interest. THUMBS IN THE MIDDLE

Shane McMahon Tell All Podcast (5/24/16):  Not nearly as lurid as the title would indicate, Mick Foley sits down with Shane McMahon. They talk about growing up as Vince’s kid, being in the WWF dressing room as a kid, getting into the business as well as the ring, Montreal (?), being at the final Nitro, why he left, why he came back, his thoughts on Stephanie and Triple H (exceedingly awkward), his Mania match with Undertaker, and more. Interestingly, you get a lot of insight into Vince but not a lot into Shane. Not completely without merit, but anyone expecting a blockbuster will be disappointed. Foley is a cordial host but he dominates too much of the conversation. THUMBS IN THE MIDDLE

MLW Radio #228 (5/24/16):  Konnan is late again, but only by a few minutes (seriously, why don’t they just delay the taping a few minutes). The three talk about WCW’s history at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Extreme Rules and WWE booking problems (a motif to be certain at this point), more AAA bashing, and some weird dude wanting fans to invest in the Classic Wrestling Revolution. Good show, but Court casually mentions speaking at NXT, and frustratingly gives no details about just what the subject matter was. THUMBS UP

The Ross Report #119 (5/24/16):  Former WWE writer Andrew Goldstein makes his Ross Report debut. The show description posits this as an Extreme Rules review, but they only talk about the show in broad strokes, which is likely for the best. But Goldstein also touches on how he got into the WWE and his time there, plus thoughts on ROH and TNA. There’s some good discussion here, but other parts (like the one complaining about chants) are a chore to get through.<Goldstein’s interview starts at 21:27>  THUMBS IN THE MIDDLE

Talk is Jericho #250 (5/25/16):  Ric Flair makes a return to triumphant podcasting as this episode’s guest (no Conrad though). He and Jericho focus on Flair’s earlier days as NWA champion, so nothing about the Nitro era or his role today. They talk about being in riots, wrestling in Japan, the famous shows in North Korea, stories about Harley Race, Roddy Piper, Wahoo McDaniel, having a nervous breakdown, and a lot more. If you’ve listened to Flair’s podcasts a lot of this will be familiar, but I’m so happy to hear him again on a podcast I don’t mind. <Flair’s interview starts at 14:12>  THUMBS UP

Bauer & Pollock (5/25/16):  Originally scheduled for Friday, a huge story (and some scheduling issues) have B&P returning to Wednesday. The upcoming draft and brand split dominate the proceedings, not surprisingly, as the duo discuss comparisons to the first split in 2002, if the shows will have different looks, whether they’ll be another world title, new potential Network specials, the effect on Impact Wrestling, and potential NXT callups. The lads also touch on Cody Rhodes’ departure, new streaming services, the Shane McMahon podcast, and the Hogan/Gawker trial. It felt good to hear a timely discussion of the huge breaking news. THUMBS UP

Bret Hart Radio (5/25/16):  Bret looks to be moving over to Podcast Arena with a rebranding, although the basic structure appears intact. This is just a short 15 minute preview (I don’t know why, since nothing is all that different) with Bret and co. talking Shawn Michaels involvement in the NHL and Cody Rhodes’ departure. I won’t grade it since it’s so short, but it’s pleasant enough, and best of all, the show now has its own podcast feed. Hallelujah!

Art of Wrestling #303 (5/26/16):  Teddy Hart is the guest. I’m tempted to leave the review at that. But for a bit more detail, Colt and Teddy talk about his growing up, the escort service he ran, his father (who sounds like almost as interesting as his son), dealing drugs, losing his brother, getting into wrestling, his WWE tryout and getting signed to a million dollar deal, and a lot more. Teddy is a complete whirlwind on this show, and whether that’s good or bad I’ll leave up to you. I found it a very compelling listen. THUMBS UP & BEST OF THE WEEK

Steve Austin – Unleashed #328 (5/26/16):  There are doings a’transpiring in the WWE, so Steve calls the Torchline to talk to Wade Keller. They discuss the proposed brand split, who will go where, will there be 2 world champions, and more, plus the plight of Roman Reigns, AJ Styles needing wins, Bray Wyatt’s future, and more. I applaud Steve for getting on the horn with Wade to discuss some current events, and I thought this was a very good outing for Wade. THUMBS UP

The Jim Cornette Experience #130 (5/26/16):  Jim and Brian talk about recent WWE releases (with Jim blowing off Adam Rose putting his hands on his wife) before they’re joined by longtime wrestler Roger Smith. Smith talks all of his personas (including the Assassin, Intern, Flame, and Dirty Rhodes), staying strong, Andy Kaufman, working in Japan, cheapskate Nick Gulas, and a promo for coal at the end. Smith certainly has some interesting stories, but this is a very un-PC show, so beware. Court Bauer put it over as one of JC’s best, which to me is overstated, but Smith certainly has a unique perspective, even if he ends every sentence with “know what I mean?” Smith’s interview starts at 29:29  THUMBS UP

Talk is Jericho #251 (5/27/16):  In an odd start, Mick Foley shows up at the beginning and promises to do a show with Jericho on March 15 of next year. Odd. Then former Saturday Night Live cast member Jim Breuer joins Jericho. They get into SNL at the end, what it was like to be a cast member, and why Jim left the show, and it’s easily the best part of the show. Before that it’s Jim and Chris talking heavy metal, Jim’s new record, hunting with James Hetfield, and recording with Angus Young, and it isn’t nearly as interesting. <Foley’s segment starts at 4:18, Breuer’s interview starts at 11:45>THUMBS IN THE MIDDLE

MSL & Sullivan Show (5/27/16):  MSL is under the weather, so no Nitro review this week, although thankfully there is still a show. So we get a lengthy back-and-forth on the current trend of wrestler’s airing dirty laundry in public, then a sizable mailbag with a variety of topics like nWo Japan, the breakup of the American Males, Taz, Continental wrestling, locker room enforcers, and Ric Flair’s (lack of) prowess as a booker. Broken record time, but it’s another go.THUMBS UP
