Meltzer says he suspected Nakamura didn't have it, as much as he did, when he signed with WWE. He felt that there is too much pressure to be a top PERFORMER in NJPW and when he started to break down, he probably didn't want to be Kojima/Nagata/Tenzan (former stars pushed to undercards).
So that was the most rationale explanation I have heard anyone presented.
But I will still say it is a longer adjustment period than folks want to admit.
