It really feels like this is Gunns film. All the lack of creative control people think Marvel gives its directors just comes off as badmouthing imo.

“I did not get any help with the first draft of Guardians of the Galaxy 2 other than I wrote a scriptment which I’ve been working on for nine months, and I wrote that very, very in-depth scriptment which is a 70-page combination of a script and a treatment and it goes through every beat of the movie, everything, and I’ve been going through that and showing that to [Marvel Studios Boss] Kevin [Feige] and getting feedback and seeing what worked and what didn’t, what characters work, what didn’t. I mean, people will be disappointed – at some point I’ll release – but I had another big character in my original draft and it was just getting too busy. I took that character out. And it’s a character I like a lot and hope to work with in the future but I just didn’t have room for that person, that character.”

Not badmouthing at all. Saying "The Studio rushed the project", "I wanted to do ABC but was forced to do XYZ", etc is simply telling it like it is.

Gunn's script might've just been in line with marvel wanted, or the cosmic universe is far enough detached from the MCU to not micromanage.

That doesnt negate everything with Jon Favreau, Patty Jenkins, Edgar Wright, and Joss Whedon. It's very clear that the studio exerted their influence. Which I dont have a problem with if they dont go pretending that they let directors realize their vision.
 
I don't mind execs exerting their influence as long as the movies don't suck.

That's the bottom line.

And it's a case by case basis. I think overall Marvel let their directors have free reign but will step in when they feel they have to. Whedon's style was still felt throughout all of AoU. It's not really meddling all that much because in the end Joss got his barn house scenes and the biggest thing Marvel really asked for was the Thor bath scene which didn't distract from the movie all that much at all.

So far Marvel been cranking out good movies, especially lately, so they're doing something right.

As for James Gunn and the upcoming sequel I think they're just going to continue to let Gunn cook because he has the luxury of working the farthest away from most of the marvel universe. I think where Gunn and Marvel will finally clash is on GotG crossing over with everybody else during Infinity War. Gunn sounds content to keep GotG separate right now. I'm assuming execs are going to want to put as many characters as possible into those movies, maybe only excluding the TV characters if you're reading between the lines of Feige's interviews

Pretty much. They let Gunn have free reign in the first movie because that was a movie where they needed to differentiate from the rest of the lineup so they wouldnt just be "Space Avengers". Guardians needed its own feel and they are letting Gunn define that feel. The same way Favreau defined Iron Man but Marvel intervened for IM2 cuz they were setting up the Avengers. (Mostly forcing him to get a movie done without giving him enough time).

And I thought it was way better than IM2. Still not a good movie but not terrible. IM2 was straight garbage.

Ehh that's not so surprising, considering the movie did a bill

I guess I'm more so surprised you would think 3 is better than 2. I thought most everyone in this thread agrees 3 is hot trash.
