James Gunn Says No CAPTAIN MARVEL Or VENOM Symbiotes In GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2

Joining the ranks of characters not appearing in the film according to director and screenwriter James Gunn are Captain Marvel and Venom. On Captain Marvel, Gunn specifically stated, "Getting this [question] a lot this morning. As I said months ago, no, [Captain Marvel] sorry." As for the symbiote and by proxy, Venom, Gunn was a little more evasive but still seemed to rule them out. "There are no rumors. Just guesses, which are fun. Only 6 of us know who's in GotG2."

Other character ruled out by Gunn for GotG2 are Gladiator of the Shi'ar Empire, Ronan the Accuser, Bug, Rom: Spaceknight, and Nova aka Richard Rider. Previously, Gunn has teased that Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will introduce his favorite Marvel Comics character, which has lead to a ton of speculation from fans. Gunn further teased that his favorite character may not necessarily be male, which is what led some to speculate that it would Captain Marvel aka Carol Danvers. It should be noted that during junket interviews before the release of Guardians of the Galaxy, Gunn stated that his favorite Marvel characters are Starhawk and Annihilus. With Annihilus' character rights owned by Fox as part of their Fantastic Four package, it stands to reason that the new character will be Starhawk.

James Gunn likes to c block. First seems against GotG and the Avengers crossing over, no Nova in GotG, now no Captain Marvel lol

Marvel's simply letting him cook since he's the one that played a big part in a major success for a franchise nobody expected to flourish.

He can veto whoever he wants for now and I really don't see a reason for any of those names to be in the GotG sequel. Marvel's doing a bunch of other movies, makes no sense for Cap Marvel to show up in GotG2 (I don't think Marvel is even going to bother with the alien version and just go straight to Carol somehow), the Nova corps been neutered they don't got no powers and they don't really need Rider right now, I don't know why ppl even thought Marvel would get their hands on symbiotes let alone Venom before Sony got the chance to do it. I mean that aint even how the Sony/Marvel deal works from what we've been told. Also there was no way in hell Rom is gonna be anything Marvel since Marvel does not own the rights or Galdiator for that matter.

As for his fav character showing up, he's succeeded with the b and c list characters so I'd guess it's Adam Warlock. Doubt it's Quasar. Might be Starhawk but that's something I'd have to see if they make him or her cool cuz I don't care much for that character, that's almost d list level :lol

Marvel is letting him have his way for now but trust and believe if they want a certain character or idea introduced into a film, they'll make it happen. I promise you Marvel force Gunn's hand to have the film center around an infinity gem. Nova has been in way to many Marvel promotional posters and television series as of lately to not make an appearance in a film soon. Promise he'll make an appearance in Guardians 2.....

Exactly. Gunn most likely won't pull an Edgar Wright/Antman scenario.

Marvel will let him cook, but not to the extent that it ruins Feige's vision for the next Phase.

Im wondering who wants venom in Guardians 2. Did they pick up bendis's trash run and think it was masterpiece. Agent Venom was one of the worst written characters in his run. At least Cpt Marvel makes sense since she could tie earth and cosmic.

Looks like Mantis is still in the running. Prolly use her human form if they go with her. Adam Warlock still in the running too. He was a central piece in the comic book Infinity War.

It'll make sense to tease Venom in an after credit scene or something seeing how the Spidey film is the next film after that.

You'd be better off saying there's gonna be a Nova movie.

I bet if Marvel forces something on Gunn he doesn't want he'll just leave. They'll both just move on.

Your reasoning remains so dumb. Nova has been apart of tv series and posters before the GotG movie was even announced. They have the teen versions of Iron Fist and Power Man in the cartoons. Medusa and Black Bolt have been heavy in posters for like the past 3 years now but Marvel is rushing to ham fist them in to an Avenger movie. If you only had a better grasp.

The thing is as the deal stands, Marvel gets Spidey in the MCU not all of the other characters apart of his world and in return in a Spidey film they get the use of a few MCU characters.

I highly doubt that all of a sudden in a future Spidey flick, he'd be going up against a MCU solely owned villain.

I'm not talking about Venom himself. I'm referring to the symbiote. I mean I'm sure they'd let that slide.

Unlike a lot of people in this thread. Gunn doesn't see inherit value in crossing over characters just to do it.

Gunn is smart to keep the guardians separate.

It is not even a character (yet). It's a symbiote. Anywho, It's not doing it just to do it. 'Tis called setup, and what better way of doing it while done in GOTG? They're already roaming alien planets. They could easily stumble upon it and have Pratt do something stupid or whatever and get some stuck on him. Doesn't take away from the plot of GOTG, just a tease. Not saying it will be done, or it should. I'm just saying it could be done.

^^Cameos for the sake of Cameos are lame. That said, it kinda seems like Gunn wants his world separate because he doesn't want to share. Judging from how he talks about Guardians, he sounds a bit possessive. I know he helped made it all mainstream, but it's not like he created the GotG property.

Watching AOS season 2 and I didn't catch that they used the Faustass method we learned about in Agent Carter. Connections. Connections.

It wasn't lame when Fury showed up after IM1.

Gunn obviously knows what he's doing, so let him keep doing what he's doing

When the suits intervene too much, we get trash like IM2

Lets not act like he's a gawd(yet). Dude did give us a goofy ending and a forgettable villain.

Doesnt make sense for Venom to be the first villain to be introduced but I guess they can get around it since everyone knows who spiderman is

Does Sony or Marvel for that matter want their first symbiote in the movies to be one that's not the Venom symbiote?

I mean the majority of them are all derivatives of Venom or Carnage. I know of one that was out in space hopping from host to host eating brains and that's about it. The rest are literally all related to the Venom symbiote in some way. Now that's not to say they can't just create a new one since the concept is relatively simple and they can just go their own way and not directly follow how it was the comics like they've done with other things but I'm not really seeing it as of now given we don't even know what GotG2 is going to be about. From an it's possible angle sure but I think Gunn has a good handle things and a vision for what fits and what doesn't for what's probably gonna be a trilogy. After he leaves and moves to Thunderbolts or something then whoever is up next can probably do that other stuff. Hopefully by then Disney just get Spidey back altogether.

At best we might get a reference to symbiotes or some alien with a symbiote in the sequel.

Plus like I've said I'm not sure the deal is that flexible. I can see Feige having the ability talk his way in to getting it and being able to use more stuff from the Spidey properties would be cool but I wouldn't be big on hoping for that yet.

Besides, with Cap Marvel, they have their other angle to do space ****. So Sony properties aside, some of that other stuff mentioned in the article can be used.

I definitely needed a lot more action for my climax, for sure. The biggest negative against GotG.
