Was MJ an average athlete??

Aight.

You right. Im wrong.
Im at work, cant see vids.

That was a breakdown on how Larry Bird is not comparable to Dirk Nowitzki? Anything else is irrelevant.
No there's no breakdown even needed between those two. It's a well known fact Dirk is not even on the same planet as basketball players as Larry Bird. A better comparision would be Lebron James and Larry Bird.

Faster pace games in the 80s led to more rebounding opportunities. I'm not here diminish anything larry did, but to say Dirk isn't even close to larry at anything aside from passing is silly.

Dirk is one of the 10-15 best players to play the game.

The game back then was a much slower pace than what it is now. Teams focused around a true big man that was taking most of the shot that were a high percentage compared to the game now. The game now is way more jump shooting and less around a true big man. Dirk should have way more opportunities on the defensive end for rebounds.

Truth be told, I don't even know that many people on this site that can objectively comment on the comparison. Some people commenting in this thread were probably not even born yet when he retired. As someone who was lucky enough to catch Bird in the second half of his career. Dude was no ******* joke, absolute beast. He's in my personal Top 5 ever.

Only 6 more people have scored more points than Dirk.

Neither of those people are name Larry Bird.

You do realize that pace in the NBA today is considerably lower than Bird's time in the league right?

The number of possessions each team gets today vs the 80s is down a good 15-20% depending on which year in the 80s you look at.

Saying the pace of the 80s is slower is a flat out lie. Its like saying 8 is more than 10.

What you talking about?

Dirk went past Larry Bird years ago.
fixed. Bird only played 13 seasons dirk has played 17. But hes been passed Bird on the scoring list I misread the total stats. Which Birds career ppg is higher than Dirks so that explains that.

Dirk scored more points his first 13 seasons than Bird did in his 13 seasons.

Dirk didn't emm start as a rookie.

Bird's ppg is higher because an average NBA game had 20 more possesions a game than during Bird's era AND the fact that Dirk could actually play as he aged which lowers his PPG.

If Dirk retired after his 13th season his career PPG and Bird's would have been the exactly the same. 24.8

I think Bird is better than Dirk but it ain't a giant chasm.

If someone thinks it is I don't know what to tell them outside of they have romanticized Larry Bird too much.

Yeah but you tried to present a statistical argument for yours and it made no sense :lol

You would have been better served just saying this from the beginning because now you look stupid.
Depends on how u interpret the stats I guess. I posted footage as well.

You can talk about pace but Bird's rebounds per 100 possessions is still higher than Dirk's

Bird's assists per 100 possessions is double Dirk's average

Bird also shot better than Dirk

Show me numbers. I'm not an advance stat person, I go by watching the games over the past 20+ years. Even what you were saying were true, it still doesnt take away the fact that Dirk isnt on the same level as Bird as an all-around player.

Dirk is 7th in NBA scoring because he's been in the league 16 years and is a glorified scorer no doubt about that. Charles Barkley and Dominique have more points than Bird, can you compare them to Bird?

EDIT:

If you compare total points year-to-year Dirk beat out Bird by around 100 points, but Bird also missed a year due to surgery.

Dirk Nowitzki has never played with another Hall of Famer in his prime.

Ever.

Larry Bird played in another member of an all NBA Team most of his career.

Dirk had one twice in 17 seasons.
