1) i see this thread not being created if it was a white bum as the character.
1. A "White bum" character probably isn't going to say, "I's be here waitin' fo yuh, boss."
2.  Latisha?  Seriously?  At BEST, this is a truly ignorant, hurtful racial stereotype.

2) it's not like people like her don't exist.

Asian men with heavy accents "exist."  Does that make Charlie Chan, "flied lice" bits any less racist?

I completely cosign this statement. That video was extremely hard to watch you mean to tell me in the future this game is set 25 + years into it .We are gonna have black people talking like slaves and mammys .This is beyond embarassing and is the main reason why I am not purchasing this game.

let me preface this by saying i agree
but youre being sort of cut and dry here
charlie chaplin mocking asians with thick accents ≠ creating an asian character in a movie or video game with a thick accent

is it inherently racist to portray a minority character who exhibits stereotypical traits?

i got a tingle that this is somehow gonna be a yahoo front page article soon.

Yes it is in a game full of multi dimensional characters ideas and concepts being thrown around .Why do they find the need to push a stereotype like this down our throats .The game is set in the distant future chances are of folks being around that talk like that is next to none. They would be dead and gone .Nobody black down south calls white people boss ,or say yessuh boss.I know for sure they dont that up north or out west.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ESPECIALLY in the middle of a city! Maybe if you visit some backwoods somewhere remote, you MAY find people that talk like that still, but c'mon... I'm viewing this entire scenario out of context, but I'm sure he isnt her "boss" in any way.

Either way, I'm glad I was offended. I'd be worried if I wasnt...

Let's take a look at another game, for example...

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

I could see if you all call it reaching if I were pointing out segments from that game calling it racist because of the CONTEXT. Sure, if you take some things out of context, you can make it look however you want, but Deus Ex is pretty inexcusable. I'm willing to give GTA: San Andreas a pass for the same reason I wouldnt call NWA or Menace to Society racist. Given, driving hood cars, gang violence, etc is a pretty stereotypical image of black people, but there were FOUR other games with white people in the SAME context before it, so I get their point.

The best thing we can do as a people is, instead of getting mad. be the best/most educated people we can be and destroy the stereotypes by eliminating them from ourselves.
Social change often comes from anger.  The advancements that HAVE been made to date resulted largely from the sacrifices of those who got ANGRY about racism, ANGRY about sexism, ANGRY about war, ANGRY about injustice.

They didn't sit there and say to themselves, "you know, I sure hate lynching and rape, but the important thing is to maintain my composure and be the best darned housekeeper this society will allow me to be."

If you're upset about it, I think the least you can do is 1) boycott the game and 2) fire off a quick email to the publisher so that they understand WHY you won't purchase the game and why you feel this particular clip reflects so poorly on the company.

Believe it or not, even complaining on NikeTalk is better than nothing.  Search "deus ex revolution racism" in Google.  If Internet discussions about this issue become prominent enough, they'll pop up when people search for the game.  You think the publisher won't take notice of that?

If you agree, then ask yourself that question.
This character doesn't just "exhibit stereotypical traits."  She IS a stereotype.

This character doesn't just "exhibit stereotypical traits."  She IS a stereotype.

dude i agreed......this particular case is racist. "latitia" is like an assortment of negative black stereotypes sloppily thrown together to create a character.
but the example about asians with accents made it seem like any sort of stereotypical trait assigned to a minority character is racist.

obviously that's not the case.

sorry if the post wasn't clear....the question was meant to be rhetorical.

^ I will gladly support any email/effort Niketalk puts forward to spreading the word of the racial content in this game.

my post was to point out the fact, that... yes, people offended by this should get mad and they should stand up for their beliefs. but it's not enough to just get mad when someone else throws it in our face. we should get mad at ourselves first and destroy these stereotypes internally as well.

meth, are views are similar. even though it doesn't seem that way.
btw... L-A = ladasha?

we gotta do better on our own Meth.

This really needs to change that scene needs to get patched out or redone.Thats just ridiculous and the other scene with the asian man was offensive also.

This is proof that the game can' be racist.
This is a white guy and he talks like Latisha.

You guys are reaching

Shame on you guys for thinking racism still exist.

There's even a MLK monument in D.C. now (made by the chinese btw)

You guys watch too much youtube with militant black guys on the corner in new york talking about "dats knowledge yo. Word son".

lulz

I think you may have simply misunderstood the example.  Charlie Chaplin â‰  Charlie Chan.  (Kind of hard to make fun of accents in silent films.)
Someone made the point that people "like" the character in the clip "do exist."  So, if someone out there speaks "similarly" to the stereotype, that makes it fair game to do something so over the top and offensive?  I certainly don't think so.

It takes 5 minutes to send out an email.  Within 30 seconds, I found the publisher and the developer: http://support.na.square-enix.com/?n=5http://www.eidosmontreal.com/contact
The development studio also has a twitter account, so I'm sure they'd be very sensitive to public comments about their racist character:  @eidosmontreal

The game should be patched and the company should issue an apology.

we should get mad at ourselves first and destroy these stereotypes internally as well.

Why pretend this is somehow your fault?  The character wasn't based on you.  The person who IS responsible for the character works for Eidos Montreal.  I'd blame them before I blame the 20 million Black women in the United States.

And, really, what are the odds that this character was even based on a real person anyway?  Almost certainly, it's a composite of racist stereotypes in the media.  What are we supposed to do, burn every copy of "Soul Plane" left in existence?

Everyone should already have sufficient motivation to be the best they can, but if this helps you stay focused that's fine.  Just understand that it's unfair to blame people of color, collectively, for the presence of racist stereotypes in the media.  If a woman takes it upon herself to learn self-defense techniques, carry pepper spray, avoid traveling alone after dark, parking in well lit areas, and so on that's fine - but it doesn't make it any less wrong for someone to say that a woman "deserved" to be raped because she was "asking for it," or that rape is a "female problem and women should stop blaming men and learn to deal with it."

The character latisha in Deus Ex Human Revolution is offensive and promotes negative stereotypes. It should be patched. @eidosmontreal.

Like I said, I'm not disagreeing with you at all. But there are problems on both sides.

Come on this game and others are developed written and engineered by socially ackward nerds and social misfits. There aren't open minded socially hip guys sitting around in videogame developer offices in front of computers for 12 hours a day writing code that interact with normal blacks,Asians,Indians or whatever. This are the guys that walked around your highschool with Dungeons and Dragons stickers on their backpacks and during lunch, they went into their favorite teachers classroom away from everyone else and played with pokemon cards. I worked with a 3D modeling company one time and a lot of the guys developed videogames as well and you would walk to their cubicle and there were action figures and all types of weird things in their space. This dudes aren't attending events and social gatherings that "normal" people attend. These dudes are mostly overweight 30 to 40 something white dudes that look like they belong in an 80's porn movie. It's racist but it's purely racism out of sheer ignorance and not hatred. These are some of the most friendly and cool people once you get to know them, they just aren't really "cool"..........

So just because they aren't "hip" gives them the right to promote these stereotypes in a mass-marketed game? That's where the game editors & testers have to come into play. No excuses here.

^ Game editors and testers are the ones trying to be developers hombre. I'm not saying its an excuse I'm just saying there are slip ups and it isn't as black and white as it seems all the time.

So because they are socially awkward they're not aware that there is a Black man running the United States, a man that speaks extremely eloquent. They're so socially awkward that they've never heard of Oprah Winfrey, Condoleezza Rice, hell even Halle Berry all of which have stellar vocabularies.
These coders, are so socially deprived that all they watch is Maury, and 1930's shuck and jive films to base their conclusions on how black women speak.

It all makes sense now, I mean these coders write the scripts as well.
