Got your own food and a soda fountain.

Waiter only came around once to leave the check and take 2 plates
Gotta get your own drinks too!! You're doing all the work, why tip?

Exactly.. we tip someone for pouring tea in a glass, walking you to a seat, and saving you the six steps it takes to get to a cash register. And the sad part is its their job to do so and get paid to do it. Yet we have teachers who stay after school off the clock, provide extra learning materials etc... for students out of their on pockets and we show our gratitude by giving them heartache's, and demand and expect more from them... Yea that sounds about right.

I had a doorman at the hotel actually say something to me. I'm like %!#%* I am 25 yr old and able bodied. I could very easily have opened the door myself, but thanks again. When I come back, don't bother

the worst is at restaurants when ole boy turns the water on for you, press the hand dryer for you etc... and want a few dollars. I mean really... i could easily get a dog or a chimp to do this amazing and extraordinary feat you just did and you have the audacity to frown upon 2 or 3 bucks.

When traveling season comes back around, I might just make a shirt that says "I got it!" or "I'll do it myself," because I'm not about tipping kats for doing something again I can easily, and would probably prefer to do and/or find generally insignificant.

tipping 2 or 3 dollars wont break the bank.... only time i never tip is when i pickup my food

No it won't, but point is what have they done to deserve it? At most they came and removed a plate from your table; seems really insignificant of a task/service provided.

It's customary to tip for takeout.
My friend works at an upscale sushi restaurant, and she has to meticulously pack the food, utensils, wasabi and what have you all in a specific manner.  She constantly complains about people not tipping.

-edit-

maybe it depends on the restaurant

I ALWAYS tip at restaurants that has a waitress/waiter.

But at a buffet? I've never done it.

(rarely go to them though, maybe gone once in the past 3-5 years)

tipping at buffet they still serve you somewhat by getting you drinks, giving you utensils or taking your plate... so whats the big deal for giving them a dollar or two for that?

At all the China Buffets I've went to you pretty do everything on your own so no tip.

But a buffet like Golden Corral or something defiantly yes.

They usually refill your drinks and swap out dirty plates

I always tip at buffets and everyone I know does too. I swear nt is an anomaly sometimes. It exists in its own world where people think tipping doesn't exist. My dad is the cheapest person in the world and he'll even leave a tip.

I always tip at buffets but I hate it. Workers are always rude, and always look like they're hiding something. Last time I went our "waitress" came up to our table in the middle of the meal and flat out said "You pay now."

I left a quarter.

In OP's situation, I would've tipped the person that cleared the table, but the waitress/waiter? Nah b.

I'm getting my own drinks as well so what exactly is the waiter/waitress doing?

I usually always tip even if the service is bad, I just tip generously when it's actually good.

WTF? Hell yeah I tip at buffets, they work harder then any normal table busser's.

As long as I sit down and eat and someone has to clean up after me I LEAVE GRATUITY. Im not a baby nobody should have to clean up after me for free.

NT is full of jerks,lol

At the chinese buffet (which is a huge buffet) near me, you get great service.

Word around town is the girls there are Escorts working for the owner.

I've seen some downtown with these random old white guys, lol.

They have 2 sets of women working there. The ones who buss tables (Not so attractive/ugly/ but friendly lol) And the ones who are servers/greeters/escorts (got damn gorgeous) who parade around the restaurant flirting, touching on each other and being stuck up when a brotha trying to get some free ***,lol.

I would say ... no. Only because you said the waitress came by to leave the bill and pick up two plates and in no way did she serve you.

Tipping at a buffet? I've been everywhere from Cracker Barrel to Golden Corral to a Chinese buffet and I've always had to serve myself including soda and changing my own plates. Why would you tip if its self serve?

They clean up after you at McDonald's when you sit in too. You gonna tip them as well? NT is an anomaly where everyone tips more than 15%, drives M3s and smashes models.
