I know what everybody's thinking
"Great, another tipping thread"

But I really gotta get some opinions on this.

Alright so yesterday me and my boys went to a Chinese buffet and when we were finished we got and went to the cash register and when we get there we split the bill and when me and my boy Chris are filling out the receipt for a CC I cross out the tip line and give it back to the lady at the register. Now, here's the thing, when I gave it back to her she immediately looked back up and asked "DO YOU GUYS NEED CHANGE?" and we look at each other like "What the hell is she talking about?" and she repeats herself "DO YOU GUYS NEED CHANGE FOR DOLLAR BILLS?" so my friend pulls out $3 and asks her what she means and she responds "For your waitress" and we look at each other again like

and pay the bill and walk out.

Now, here's the thing, why do you tip at a buffet where we kept getting dirty looks from the workers and before we got up for a second plate they threw the bill down and said have a nice day?

I always thought you don't tip at a buffet because everything is self-serve but apparently we were in the wrong.

Was I in the wrong?

or were they just overreacting/

I never tip at a Buffet. Golden Corral has nice customer service though.

You're supposed to still tip at a buffet, albeit at a lesser % than normal.

Whenever i get a little too much hope for humanity you can always count on an NT tipping thread to bring you back down to earth. I'm not sure I tip as much as a normal restaurant but maybe considering how cheap most buffets are. A few dollars ($1-3) for the person who gets your drink and cleans your plate and table isn't asking a lot.

was it like a Brazilian bbq where waiters bring you meats or w/e?

or did you never see a waiter at all?

It was all self-serve
Got your own food and a soda fountain.

Waiter only came around once to leave the check and take 2 plates

damn,

that's like asking for a tip for a pickup order.
or am I supposed to be tipping then, as well?

You tip if they refill your drinks, take your plates, bring you rolls.

if its not that kind of place, na, why would i?

i leave like 2 bucks on the table for the busser since they cleared all my damn plates.  i never leave it with the cashier.  probably wouldn't even give it to the table clearer.

!$@! them. If it's all self serve, even your drinks, then again what are you tipping for? Tipping is the biggest scam ever. People want tips for not even doing anything. Waiters spend the whole time you're there outside smoking, but apparently you're supposed to tip them because they have no marketable real life skill and refill sodas for a living.

At a buffet they almost always do that because what else are you gonna order after you've gotten your drinks? That's even assuming it's the type of buffet where they bring you the drinks, some of them now just have a soda machine and cups. The staff just cleans up and replaces the food, so I'll leave a couple bucks on the table for that, but not like a 15 or 20% tip. If you're a part of 4 or less, I'd say leave about $1.50 per person that was sitting there. If it's 5 or more, a buck a person.

I always tip generously. If im strapped for cash then i eat at the crib.

I tip a few bucks. Definitely less than I would if it was a normal restaurant.

Exactly.. we tip someone for pouring tea in a glass, walking you to a seat, and saving you the six steps it takes to get to a cash register. And the sad part is its their job to do so and get paid to do it. Yet we have teachers who stay after school off the clock, provide extra learning materials etc... for students out of their on pockets and we show our gratitude by giving them heartache's, and demand and expect more from them... Yea that sounds about right.

I had a doorman at the hotel actually say something to me. I'm like %!#%* I am 25 yr old and able bodied. I could very easily have opened the door myself, but thanks again. When I come back, don't bother
