Saw some documentary years ago about these Christians grouping up to partake in card counting at casinos. They justified it saying they were taking money from these evil establishments or something to that sort.

Just because someone claims that they identify as something doesn't mean they really are.

Because they assumed the best. In the church (in fact, in most religions), questioning authority figures is highly frowned upon. It's not like believers are actively involved in choosing and evaluating potential spiritual leaders within their congregation. There's a lot of unearned trust in that environment, and predators take advantage of that.
