Why do people valuate him less because he's a MF?

forwards are worth more than midfielders because forwards get paid to do the hardest thing in football which is to score a goal.

no one is saying that midfielders arent important to your team...i don't know why you went there.

they just aren't as valuable as a goal scorer.

take barca for example...they have been buns this year...iniesta has been out.  the defence and midfield have been slacking. suarez and neymar have also been off form.

messi has carried this team and masked a lot of problems by scoring goals. goal scorers can single handedly win you games.

that's why theres a gripe with pogbas price.

he's the most expensive player ever.

any of the top forwards in the world would easily had a bigger impact than pogba.

every other club knows this thats why no one wanted to pay him all that money...except united.

Pogba will be worth ever damn penny if Man U wins the league.

It doesnt look likely after that awful run in October but even without winning the league,he's starting to look worth it.

Dude is statistically speaking having a better start to the season than he did last year and he's arguably not even in his prime yet at 23...

I could care less how much dude costs if he's out there performing and making a difference on the pitch which is what he's starting to do with consistency.

Took him a little while to set his feet after having no preseason but he's finally starting to look like the player he's expected to become. He's been influencing games a lot more and makes up for errors by creating lots of chances. I'm just glad Woody ended up coughing up the cash instead of letting him get snapped up by one of the Spanish giants :lol

If you have it,why the hell not spend it to improve your squad for the long term future?

Is scoring the hardest thing in football though?

Would blocking said goal in reality be the most difficult thing? Patience, experience, logic, being able to read the attacker, agility, reach, endurance. Goalkeepers have to be that much more ahead of the attack especially when there can be numbers against you. Which is why most keepers are more valuable/hit their prime with later age?

So in reality, shouldn't keepers get the highest wages/cost the most by that logic? The weight of the game is on the keepers shoulders

But I get what you're saying. They have the most important job which is to put the ball in the net so they cost the most. Name of the game is to put the ball in the net. I wouldn't say its the hardest though, since Ramos is outchea showing that he can do it all when theres +2 minutes left on the clock.

To me that's looking at in a vacuum.  I don't think it's categorically true that forwards are of greater intrinsic value than central midfielders.

Even harder than scoring goals is creating goals. A central midfielder of Pogba's caliber gets paid to score goals, create goals, and prevent the opposition from scoring goals. That sounds like damn good positional value to me.

I wasn't implying that anyone said midfielders aren't important to the team either. All I said was to valuate Pogba based on what positions he doesn't play on the field is flawed.

Yes forwards can appear* to win you games by themselves but citing the greatest player of all time isn't a good example.  Sticking with Barca though, what about their 08/09 CL winning season?  Samuel Eto scored +30 goals, was he more influential than Xavi? What about 2011, David Villa scored 25 across competitions. Far more goals than Iniesta, was he more valuable?

But we got sidetracked here. My point wasn't who's more valuable or influential, FW or CM.

I just think placing a cap on Pogba's value explicitly because of the nature of his position is flawed. Pogba was the most expensive player ever due to the market growth rate we see year-to-year in the sport. EPL playing with monopoly money this year dramatized that market growth.

Liverpool almost won the PL in 2014 because they had Suarez, a healthy Sturridge, and Sterling.

Midfield and defense is overrated b

Why can't Argentina win an international cup final?

No goals.

/discussion

Trophies aren't there because certain strikers can't finish in finals (Higuain)

Argentina reached those finals (especially in the two Copa Americas) because of elite striker play in the earlier rounds

Argentina is a perfect example of how important strikers are. When they show up, you can beat anyone. When they don't, you're going to lose to Chile (twice).

Like I said, it wasn't my point but I fundamentally disagree that strikers are categorically more important than central midfielders in the success of the team.

All I know is FIFA robbed Iniesta and Xavi in favor of Messi for the 2010 and 2011 Balon D'ors. Those years had some of the greatest midfield performances I've seen in my life from those two

for my gooners:

Ramsey had a bit of a knock but will be back in full training next week. Welbeck also will be back in full training next week after being out since may :smokin glad to see he recovered on time and the depth will be helpful.

The media is obsessed with Alexis's contract. he spoke to sky sports and said this
asked about his contract, which still has 18 months to run, he said, “To be quite honest, right now I’m more focused on winning football matches. I’m staying concentrated on that side of things.

“It doesn’t really depend on me so much as it does the club, if they want to show confidence in me.

“I’m very happy here, I love it here, I love all the staff, the cooks, the employees that do so much for us.

“I’m very grateful to everybody, and as I say I’m very happy here. So it depends on Arsenal.

“I really enjoy the relationship with the fans,” he continued. “They go every game and they fill up the stadium, they’re cheering and they’re passionate. I really love that.

“I want to win, and I want to achieve my objectives … more for them, because they’re always at the stadium, packing it out.
pay him all the $$$$ arsenal, the guy is earning it. And shout out to the cooks making top top pancakes for alexis :hat

Scoring is without a doubt the most difficult and most important part of footy. Nobody is saying Giroud's job is more important than Iniesta's, or that what he does is more difficult, but overall having a consistent reliable scorer is the most important thing a team can ask for if they want to win.

I'm not saying Man U overpaid for Pogba because they have the money and if they sell to Real or Barca they'll recoup a lot of it back. But just in the context of the side discussion. RM wouldn't be the same team without Ronaldo if they had an all time great defender. Barca wouldn't be the same team with a prime Xavi still there and no Messi.

I have to disagree if we're talking about the specific act of scoring and not the bigger picture. I don't think it can be looked at in a vacuum like that.

Creating goals and successfully preventing them are just as important as finishing, they're just different functions.
Nobody is saying Giroud's job is more important than Iniesta's, or that what he does is more difficult
Isn't that explicitly what you're saying?

northoaklandfc northoaklandfc you're an Arsenal supporter right?

No wonder you're saying strikers are overrated.

Food for thought:

France calls Karim Benzema, they're Euro 2016 champs.

Not really.

Not once in this discussion have I suggested that I think strikers are overrated. :lol

A team with inefficiencies on any line or unit is limiting it's own chances of success. Arsenal or France this summer could be an example of that sure.

Benzema doesn't guarantee France wins the Euros though you know that.
