Eliminating the group stage and replacing it with a new playoff phase for teams in smaller countries will help prevent MLS and Liga MX teams from being hit with group games in the latter half of the calendar year. That is a benefit, but it’s a small one given that the biggest problem – knockout games during MLS preseason – remains. MLS can’t change its own schedule because many of its northeast and midwest markets experience freezing cold weather in the winter.

This is the MLS reason why they don't want to have games in the winter :lol

It's a very valid reason man. Every league in the world with a similar climate to our Eastern and Midwest cities operates on a near identical calendar, or takes an extended winter break like Germany.

I mean, some of the blame is on the MLS season schedule not matching up with the rest of the world

Agreed
MLS can't compete in the fall with NFL...yet.

In a country of 330 million MLS doesn't need to compete with the NFL.

If MLS grows in status to the point where it rivals the NHL, then financially it would be on par with the EPL.

Think about that for a second.
wait.... what????

this is some lame excuse...The majority of clubs in Europe play in harsh conditions. They can even implement the mid season break like all leagues(except England) have

Well, if I recall, correct me if I'm wrong, when MLS first came out and had the schedule format all set up, weren't all the teams playing in multi purpose stadiums that other professional or college teams were playing in? I think scheduling conflicts with other leagues have more to do with it than weather problems.
You can say that now plenty of MLS teams have their own soccer stadium though to not revert to a more traditional schedule.

Never thought it about that way

I don't understand the confusion. Look at the 2016 financials.  Revenues were almost identical. Very comparable across other metrics, NHL is more profitable.

It's not a lame excuse it's reality.

The majority of clubs in Europe don't play in harsh conditions because the countries with actual harsh conditions operate on a summer schedule like MLS.

Parisian winters aren't harsh. Neither are UK winters.

You can count the number of EPL games played in conditions like this per year on one hand.

The reality is that in cities like Boston, Kansas City, Denver, Philadelphia, Montreal, Toronto, etc you'd be playing in these conditions on a regular basis in the winter.

It would be absolutely foolish.

Someone did bring this up in the past and I agree 100%. At the rate the MLS is growing, we shall soon see.

Well my photos were simply alluding to the "cold and rainy night in Stoke" joke.

Nothing more, nothing less.

Regardless, it does help illustrate how stupid playing through the winter would be for MLS.

America's harsher climates are not the same as the U.K. or Southern Europe where they play through the winter, which was the underlying point.
