I just hope Doc can create the magic without Illangelo though. Kiss Land was amazing but I'll be real and say I would like him to create something along the lines of the Trilogy mixtapes.

Sonically, KL was a departure from the Trilogy sound but it worked well for the man. Made classic material. But I'd be lying if I said I wasn't expecting a continuance of the trilogy sound.

At this point, we can all admit that dude's on a new wave right now. Seeing as we only have a limited amount of material to go off of, it's too soon to say whether that wave is a good one or not. I really do hope son would go back to that trilogy sound though. As much love as Often, Or Nah, and In Vein gets from me, what homie did on the Trilogy was nothing short of incredible. **** was ******* timeless. :{
 
Yeah I'll take kissland over EOS but it's not touching Thursday or HOB...not even close

Doc+Illangelo+Weeknd = genius, one of the few groups of people to say they were the forerunners of a distinctly new sound.

Weeknd = meh.


It's becoming clear to me that abel was one part of a greater machine and maybe not even the best part.

I don't know man am I the only one who feels like Trilogy was not at all one unified sound? 

With the exception of Gone, Thursday sounds nothing like HOB to me. Like nothing at all. EOS was a mix with a range of stuff and something that would of have fit on both the prior tapes. 

Kissland was obviously different but for me it wasn't even that different sonically. Yea it was more polished but the biggest difference was his writing and how personal it was. Huge departure from HOB, not quite as much from Thursday and EOS plus it had Kissland/John Carpenter which is 100% pure, unadulterated, vintage, 2011 Weeknd.

Complete opposite for me. 

Kissland proved The Weeknd is a genius in and of himself. 
 
Cosign on both the last two posts. I feel like expecting an artist to continue to make music that sounds like leftovers from something he did 3 years ago is incredibly stifling artistically.

All I ever want from Abel is strong production and the amount of focus that he's shown to put into each project. I know that from there, whatever direction he goes in; he won't let me down.
 
Y'all not getting it, nobody wants him to make the same music he already made, just work with producers with the expertise of Doc/Illangelo.


He proved with Kissland that he stand alone from a writing/vocal standpoint but the production/mixing wasn't as forward looking or as interesting as what Doc and Illangelo have shown they can do.
 
You can't deny how much he's improved lyrically over time though. I love HOB, its probably my favorite project from him but some of the lyrics are a little laughable sometimes. On KissLand he was real in depth and personal.

Production wise....I don't think anything was wrong. It was in the same vein (Alternative R&B) but yet different. it was still dark and atmospheric and quite honestly the fact he isn't afraid to branch out is a good thing. He started off with pure debauchery and evolved from that but showed every once in a while he can jump right back to that.
 
I already fully gave my support in reference to him linking back up with Illangelo (since him and Doc seem to already be good again.)

However, people are clearly saying that they'd hope the music produced from that kind of reunion would sound more along the lines of cuts from the Trilogy. All I said is that I imagine that to be stifling for an artist.

It's all opinion and music is subjective, but I'm just glad I fell in love with Kiss Land. That tells me that the Weeknd definitely isn't meh. On top of that I can point to other remixes (Odd Look, Trust Issues, Drunk in Love and Or Nah), features (One of Those Nights, Gifted and In Vein) and random tracks (King of the Fall and Often) that I value just as much as his Trilogy stuff.

Weeknd with those original producers created some of the most captivating music I've ever heard no doubt. Just think it's a huge slight to the Weeknd for calling him meh when he's created classic material (to me) without Doc and Illangelo.

Again it's all opinion.

Lmao I'm cool with them bringing back the sound from Trilogy...all those songs like someone was doing some sampling after swigging down some lean

Is there any rumors about when a new project might see the light of day?  I'm sure KTT is thirstier then we are.  Dropping a video for often makes it seem like something should be right on the horizon.  

Often right now has been on constant repeat.  
 
my biggest reason for even liking abel is his beat selection.

i'm into deep, dark, cinematic beats tho...

take a track like "the zone" for instance... so dark, haunting, and different... never really heard an "R&B" artist go in on beats that abstract b4...

i also like the fact that it was his first track where he featured a big artist, and drake's verse don't even start until more than 5 minutes into the song...

so money.

cuz it's putting music first (not making music obvious and formulated to have mass appeal, but just making deep stuff the artist is just really feeling, simple as that)...

there's this new wave of "alternative R&B" that i am only messing with cuz the beats are so dark and different.

a lot of these beats remind me of downtempo / trip hop (a sort of lost genre now)... i have a healthy collection of that stuff dating back to the early 90's, on both vinyl, cd, and mp3, and while it's mostly an instrumental style of music, it's more artistic than your average beats which usually are lacking due to their purpose of remaining simple so to play the back drop for a rapper / singer's voice and ego to flex... the music itself says more to you than any voice or lyrics can some times...

but hearing good singers from this new wave of artists being able to go in on deep beats like these, well, it's music to my ears...

having recently discovered majid jordan's 2 EP's, i'd love to hear abel on some of their beats... that "tea & coffee" joint from their first EP is one of the best songs i've heard in a long time...
 
Definitely agree with you proto j.

Majid jordan is very slept on in my opinion in that their music is so laid back; both of those projects are fire.

I remember hearing the zone for the first time when Thursday dropped and loved it for that dark feel it had to it, and then drake showed up with his verse that fit absolutely perfect into the whole vibe. I was so surprised by it too because it didn't have him listed as being featured on the song lol.

But with all this talk about the trilogy I think that's what I liked most about it. Just how unpredictable and free flowing the beats were. They weren't the typical structured beat but more of a cohesive string of thoughts and feeling if that makes sense.
