I have seen hornets do that in person. I had a tree in the back yard that was dying and was full of ants. The hornets attacked the nest and were stinging and eating them. They were hundreds of hornets so it looked the bark was moving on the tree. They eventually made a nest in the planters box by my front door. I even saw them snatch cicadas right of the air.
