Chinese business man sentenced to 13 years in jail for killing, eating 3 tigers
A Chinese businessman was sentenced to 13 years in prison after he killed and ate three tigers.
The man, identified only by his surname Xu, made three trips to the southern province of Guangdong to buy the tigers. In those trips he took 15 other people who would assist and watch as he slaughtered the exotic animals.
During the trial it was said that Xu would grill tiger bones and paws, and stored their penises. Xu would also eat the meat and create alcohol out of the tiger's blood, which he would drink, according to a Xinhua News Agency.
One of the slaughters was caught on tape by one of Xu's party members, which was later obtained by police.
Eight pieces of animal meat and bones were also seized by police from Xu's refrigerator. Some of the meat was from a tiger. The others were from geckos and cobras, according to reports.
Xu and his party were originally sentenced in April, but they appealed. The court rejected the appeal this week and sentenced him to 13 years. He was also fined with 1.55 million yuan, which is roughly $249,812.
The 15 other people who assisted Xu were also arrested and sentenced to a minimum of five years in prison. They also faced minor fines.
Tigers are considered an endangered species since they've been victims of poaching and habitat loss. Chinese believe that tiger meat has health-giving properties and works as an aphrodisiac.
